Im actually doing the reverse ofnthis because the pgx price pointnisnhard to beat. Glad you had a great crossover experience! Looking forward to more of these videos.
Very cool experiment. I agree that PGX is probably not inflating its grades. 5 out of 6 books within .5 or the same is pretty good. Thanks for sharing. ✌️
If you are happy with the results, then I am as well satisfied with the turnout of this series, brother. I'm glad nothing took a huge bump & and it's always interesting to see these types of comparisons. #staylegendary & much ❤
Nice one Rob, not bad results at all, all things considered. Given some of my experiences with PGX graded books in crossover, I'd be thankful that they all came back with a blue label.
Yes, all of them draw from the same basic standard, but then deviate from it. The one book that had the biggest drop was due to a subscription crease. CGC limits a book with a subscription crease to a maximum 5.5 grade regardless of other issues, where as other graders may give the book a higher grade if no other flaws are presenting.
That was better than I expected. I know you mentioned they pressed the books but curious if they cracked the slab as well. Seems like if they did that their grading might be bias...
Yes, CGC cracked the slabs and they pressed the books to compensate for the additional handling of the book. I understand the argument that doing this could color the results, but I also am taking CGC at their word, that this is all removed and nothing identifying the books is with them through the pressing and grading processes.
I think PGX gets a bad rap, but very undeservedly. I did my first submission with them and they were great to work with and I grading seemed fairly accurate if not a bit harsh.
Wow, I love this video. Well, I have to tell you my friend has a comic book store for 30 years and he took Iron Man.1 PGX I think it was around a 6.5 and he sent it to CGC it came back 7.0 or 7.5 whatever it was CGC gave that a higher grade.. I guess you never know. Obviously if you are a comic book collector, when you want to resell, you would want CGC because you would get a bigger bang for your buck…
@@Robs.fatstax for sure with most of my slabs PGX and some more hopefully getting graded this summer I was nervous for the results. I agree it’s so tough to judge those 3.4-6.5 even 7 books 👍 can’t wait for the next video 🤘🤘
Years before that got PGX fire was the TMNT 1 issue. A guy sent in a first print and got a third print back. That’s the PGX story. Plus cat piss, but that’s a different story. I personally would sell all PGX and go CGC or my personal favorite CBCS.
I know the TMNT story, though I have never seen the video. I heard there were some questions about authenticity. I also heard about an old PGX grader grading his own books, and lots of stories about missed restoration. At some point though those stories persist because we allow them too. There are countless stories of CGC screwing up, including tons of questions related to the 9.9s hitting the market, but still the community stands behind CGC like they can do no wrong. Competition is good.
The reason you've never seen that video is because it was faked and staged. I talked with the owner of PGX all the time and the maker of that video was going to be sued for defamation and took it down so they wouldn't get sued. I can't believe people still believe that to be a true thing @@Robs.fatstax
I have a PGX Superman Annual #1 from 1960 at a 4.5 and a Superman 80 page Giant #1 from 1964 (What was going to be Annual #9) in PGX 6.5 they both have slightly split spines and look basically the same. I do wonder what would happen if I sent them to CGC?
Very interesting the differences between grades, lucky it wasn’t huge grade losses but as long as your ok with the results then it’s a good bit of fun 👍👍👍
The PGX books were sent in as "crossover grading" which means they were sent in encapsulated still. I understand the argument that doing this could color the results, but I also am taking CGC at their word, that this is all removed and nothing identifying the books is with them through the pressing and grading processes. Like I said, this was not a scientific controlled experiment.
All Amazing Spider-Man slabs! My favorite... Although not scientific, PGX is pretty much on par with CGC. Great video, Rob. Thanks for sharing! #ComicsCuringCancer
Unfortunately this would be very difficult as FMV is based on all market sales. Segmenting by grading company would be challenging, and the sample size of PGX sales would make it extremely challenging. I will say from past experience, getting interest from folks to buy a PGX graded comic is difficult unless its a major major key, and aggressively priced.

Another good video. Part 4 sounds interesting. Are you going to submit them yourself, or will you be using a 3rd party dealer to submit them? There's tinfoil hat theories around different grades going out to different account levels.
I’ve considered buying PGX I did once it was a Wonder Woman 6 1st Cheetah was only $350 that was about 15 years ago so it’s not that price anymore and I kick myself for not having it today But I’ve thought about buying again I’ve heard they weren’t good at detecting restoration But as far as grading it looks pretty close to what CGC gave and even CGC can’t agree with itself on what’s a 9.6 or a 9.8
I agree, I always had good customer experience with PGX, though the amount of rework that needed to be done on my submissions was a higher percentage than I experience with CBCS or CGC. But ultimately, its the reputation that kills them and most of that reputation seems to stem from one or two stories from the past, that the community wont look past, even though CGC can make several missteps and no one seems to care.
Rob did CGC know they were regrading. Seems a little suspicious most came back lower grades, like a restaurant critic you have to be the negative one, can never agree, makes you 'appear' more professional...
The PGX books were sent in as "crossover grading" which means they were sent in encapsulated still. I understand the argument that doing this could color the results, but I also am taking CGC at their word, that this is all removed and nothing identifying the books is with them through the pressing and grading processes. You should only buy PGX if its to get a book you need and have it submitted to CGC. If you're buying a raw then submitting it to PGX, then that's a waste of time because you essentially devalued your book by sticking it in a lower tier holder. I cant seriously believe pgx 9.9s or 10.0s will hold as CGCs. No way
I agree that with the market the way it is today, your assessment is more or less correct. Though, based on this series so far, should we be putting as much value in the brand of the holder as we do?
I am sorry if my use of the term offends you. As a father of an LGBTQIA child, I am aware of the term and how it is often used today. In fact my use of the term was intentional as an attempt of adding some levity, but also to draw on the notion that somehow something is not right simply based on the presentation. Appreciate you adding to the discussion.

I was very concerned about possible restoration, that is the thing I hear more often than anything else.
Well done. Yes, I think this shows PGX is not so bad. Can't go wrong upgrading to CGC and adding that nice custom label.
This series has made me feel better about many of my early grading choices.
Either way it’s a complete stranger giving us a numbers on our books!.
100% truth. Its an independent third party providing their assessment of the book's condition.
