I was a public defender for a year and a half. I decided to quit and work in private practice, but I soon realized that making money off of criminal defendants was NOT where my heart was. Now I’m currently waiting for an opening at my home public defenders office so I can get back in the fight! :))

    Greetings Jamar,
Myname is Jordan I am a young African American male preparing to go into law school. I majored in Sociology and worked as a Social Worker in Downtown LOS ANGELES in the Skidrow neighborhood. It is my passion to work in public interest in many capacities, especially defense. I reviewed the comments and don’t have any social media as I took a break (was time to get close to God above anything) so I can’t message you on instagram. However, I want to say thank you for doing what you do and persevering! I hope to reach out to you and learn more!

Currently in my undergrad, and have been considered pursuing law for the better part of the last year. Your final statement about you being a social engineer, someone who is able to better the conditions for the underprivileged and underrepresented people really hit home for me. Having considered social work, but feeling frustrated looking upon the mire of bureaucracy in that field, I really resonate with utilized the privilege that I have to improve the material conditions of the laymen -- and of those who are not offered any legitimate, material assistance in our society. I'm happy I found your video, it was exactly what I was looking for. A real explanation of your feelings as a public defender, not parsed through some large media outlet like NYTimes. Thanks for sharing, I truly appreciate your insight.

So you are a criminal defense attorney, not a public defender. A public defender is an employee of either the state, county, city or whatever territory. PDs represent those who cannot afford an attorney or are incapable of retaining legal representation for whatever reason and have been appointed one by the court.
Unless the jurisdiction has contracted out criminal defense legal services to private law firms like yourself. I think it’s important to distinguish between the two.

Thank you. While I hope you had the best intentions in your comment, there are plenty of young Black men fighting for what’s right. Contrary to popular belief and media, fighting for what’s right is actually a common quality amongst young Black men. However, it’s much more convenient to demonize and devalue Black men as a whole than to recognize when America mistreats and misjudges Black Men, God allows the world to mistreat and misjudge America.

I haven’t had that career path. But corporate litigation is civil, whereas public defender is criminal.

Question for you. Do you know how the public defenders “office” works in small counties? I put office in quotations bc my county does not have a public defender’s office. The public defenders are also lawyers that can be hired. They are all on a rotation. I had trouble with on of the lawyers who was acted as my public defender showing up to court. When I called to complain about his behavior (he also called the assistant district attorney an asshole in court) they told me there was no public defenders office nor anyone supervising the public defenders and if I wanted to complain I need to complain with the bar association. Well when you complain with the bar you have to disclose your name and I am extremely fearful of retaliation. I’m just curious how public defenders in small town USA is supposed to work. My Google searching has not be successful.
I’m in Franklin County NC for reference. Than you in advance for any insight you may have!
