    Let's face it: No two vocalists sound the same. However, that doesn't mean that they don't have a few things in common.
    James Wasem joins us to share a baseline vocal EQ setup that you can then fine-tune to each vocalist.
    In this video, you'll discover:
    ✅ Male vs female vocal low-cut filter
    ✅ Different mics for different vocals

    Boosting my 12k+ with a shelve really does clear it all up. I'm glad I'm not the only one.
    Main thing is, experiment when you have time on your own. It's where I apply all this knowledge for trial sessions.
    Effects can really make vocals POP too if you learn how to EQ those properly, but that is a whole new segment.

    The Shure SM58 and Sennheiser 835 are EQed very differently. The SM58 is more of a Rock mic, the 835 is more generally flat. I prefer the 835 over the SM58 myself, but the Sennheiser 935 is my favorite stage mic.

    • @donf3877
      @donf3877 5 месяцев назад +1

      Very different mics. I use the SM58 for ladies, and men that are tenors. Otherwise, the men sound like a bullfrog without massive EQ!!! The bass bump held in close helps for higher freq vocals. And, I use the 835 for men, and ladies that are altos. The flatness really works for them. Using them that way, I don't require much EQ. My "big" EQ is the high mids. Right around 1K to 1.3K. Bringing it up slightly really helps with the "understanding" of the words.

    interesting. thanks. Would be nice if you could share how to EQ piano too, which is the main (and most of the time the only) instrument during worship. While I apply low-cut filter on vocal, is it appropriate to apply low cut filter for piano? What frequencies should be boosted for piano? thanks.

    • @collabworship
      @collabworship  3 года назад +5

      No low cut needed on piano. If you feel it is taking over the mix, cut in the 400-600Hz range. If it sounds too harsh, cut in the 1-3kHz range.

      You should always hi pass your piano if you’re mixing it in an arrangement with any instruments in the low end (kick, bass). Think of a mix as an upside down pyramid. You can’t have instruments fighting for space in the low end, the space down there is really limited. I start my hi pass on keys at 100 and then sweep up until it’s sitting nicely in the mix.

    Since watching videos like this I’ve stopped boosting what I want to hear and started cutting. I always boosted as I wanted to it to sit above everything. How young and naive I was

      @@collabworship I think you're correct. I always thought my guitar pedals were working when they made my sound louder. I really just needed them to make my sound better not louder ha

    I usually cut these frequencies too and also boost 12k 😃
    You guys didn't mention de-ssing at all though?

    • @collabworship
      @collabworship  3 года назад +7

      Instead of using a desser, try backing off the compressor threshold a bit. This usually fixes the problem without having to use a desser.

      I really like a lot of highs in my vocal sounds so I do use a de-esser to prevent those sounds from getting too crispity and shrill. But I do like a pretty bright vocal sound, within reason of course. But I've found it really helps it stay on top especially if you keep that in mind when EQing other instruments. Like I usually put a high-cut on something like electric guitars around 13k, I've even gone as low as 8k with the hi-cut on guitars, it doesn't change the sound at all but really helps to clean it up so you don't get cymbals or even I've noticed when we have a fogger or geyser close to the guitar rigs when you hit the button you'll get that PSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHT and you're like what in the F was that?! lol.

    I have a Thin male tenor voice. What mic is best suited for my voice and when eq should I still cut low mids?

    • @collabworship
      @collabworship  3 года назад +1

      As far as mics go, test out what you have available and choose the one that sounds the best. And yes, even though your vocal is thin, you'll still need to use a low cut filter and likely cut in the 600Hz range. If you want to add some depth to your voice, you can try a small boost in the 200-400Hz range.

    • @collabworship
      @collabworship  3 года назад

      This is usually not a problem to be solved with EQ. Rather, try different mic placement or a different wind screen.

    im still mystified how deep vocals of singers like Don William sounds better with more bass if they cut out the low ends...cutting off the low end is not good for baritone singers, it makes them sound unnatural

    • @collabworship
      @collabworship  2 года назад +1

      It all depends on your setup. If they are singing with a full band, you'll want to cut the lows out to make room for the instruments that take up that space (bass guitar, kick drum, etc). If it's a vocal ensemble, leave the lows in there.
