Molly Tuttle is a national treasure! Besides her indisputable and recognized guitar mastery, this song showcases her incredible vocal talents. From her whispery, featherlike tones, to her brassy belting with its hard-edged resonance, to sustaining perfectly rounded vowels, the lady conveys both innocence and believability -- she makes it feel like she's telling you something about herself with the lyric, the emotion, the intensity. What a talent!
This interpretation of this great song is perfection. Molly Tuttle's "The Old Apple Tree" album version is very good, but this pared-down take is special. It's a shame it is only available as a low fidelity youtube video. Sorry for being an ingrate, but this performance is to die for. Maybe Under the Apple Tree Sessions will offer a download collection someday. edit: Molly does have a newer version of Cold Rain and Snow downloadable at bandcamp. Vocal and tempo are similar to this version. I still think this particular solo performance blows away every other cover I've heard.
I really try to avoid judging and comparing art but I agree Molly’s is the best and imo blows Jerry’s and the Dead’s out of the water. She’s on another level.
What a amazing lady!......................how can you not love her. Brilliant guitarist and what a fine voice she has that fits everything just perfect. Some people just have it......................and she clearly does in spades!
I’ve never seenJerry but I’ve seen phil with a few of the best artists around and I have to say I can’t wait until Molly plays with billy strings again. She could be on the stage with the Greateful legends 🤙
I'm not going to to say anything about the picking in your songs because it's fantastic and I'm just in awe of ur ability🙌... I will say, marvelous voice as well, and I like your rendition of the song😊
@@thomasmccormack1183 Sure, the Pentangles are unforgettable! But this version stands up to 1971 one, as Molly has reinvented it: suspended, rarefied, beautifully played and sung. Really Emotional.
This is a stunning version of this song! Can anyone tell me about the chords she's playing here? The main shape is the G, but what is the next one? It looks like 033010, but at one point it looks like she uses 033011 (with the capo being the nut). Does this chord have a name, or is it a partial? if so, a partial of what? There's a lot of variation in the chords used in the many covers of this song, but I think I like this one the best.
you need to put your thumb on the 1st fret (6 string). Both are f chord 133210 and 133000. This song only has 2 chords, g and f. In treble also use 3xx035 (G9) chord, and 1xx013 F(9) chord)
She's loaded with talent with such an angelic voice. Her voice is so soulful, I could listen for hours. I what year that D-18 is? I assume it's a Martin D-18 but no decal on the peghead.
Beautiful interpretation, but what tuning does Molly Tuttle use in this piece? I love country music very much, I used to play it since I was a boy. Very nice your channel youtube
Just fantastic. Besides the fact that Molly is a great singer and one of the best guitarists on the planet, the *recording* is aweseome! What kind of shotgun mic are you using here?
@@tedhart7708 Thanks guys! The shotgun mic is a Rode NTG-1 - definitely not designed for use on guitars but always liked how it comes across! Little bit of EQ & compression but not much else
This is so exquisite that although she released it on a very early recording with her father, IMHO she should re-release it just as it is here, needing nothing else in the way of instrumentation or ornamentation.
Can anyone please help me with the lyrics. I can't make out what she sings after "Well I came into the room..." something "final tune". Thanks to anyone who can help me out with this.
Anyone know who is the originator of this song? ...or is it one of those old Americana folk songs passed down generations to which no one knows where it came from?
gosh. sure wish that mic stand was somewhere else. please don't cover Molly's hands ever ever ever. Thanks for making video but I need all the help I can get to figure out what she is doing.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, this song has been covered by just about everyone under the sun but Molly's is by far the best.
Have you ever heard Jerry Garcia cover it?
great but Dead got this one sewed up tight
I really try to avoid judging and comparing art but I agree Molly’s is the best and imo blows Jerry’s and the Dead’s out of the water. She’s on another level.
Try Pitt Bellevue
pentangle version better
the most beautiful cover of cold rain I have EVER heard! Jerry is floating on a cloud listening to this one..............
Yeah I'm real picky about who I'll listen to because it's such an insurmountable mountain. And then there's Molly. Ain't no mountain she can't climb.
Jerry specifically excluded the verse of anyone meeting one's doom. He would admire all else about this rendition.
Molly Tuttle is on an artistic level very few can achieve. An amazing talented young lady ❤️
Best thing about my lockdown was discovering this gem
Sings like an angel, plays like the devil. What more do you want?
She still hasn't told us where the body is.
Holy Jesus, that's the best version period
WOWWW this is BRILLIANT!!!

I can just see Dolly, Emmy Lou, Linda sitting around watching this and thinking "Damn ...."
One of the best versions I've ever heard. She's amazing.
Another excellent cover, by Molly! Good God! So mournful...she sure does Garcia bluegrass numbers proud.
This is a level of mastery that few ever attain. So technically skillful, but even more emotionally powerful.

Killing it, Molly. This is the best version I have ever heard of this song. It's blues. All us bluegrass folk play it way too fast. (Del excluded:)
Listen to chris thile's version

Dear Molly, you are both an inspiration and a gorgeous human being - Baz
Outstanding. So much talent here.
I'd sure like to see a collaboration between Molly Tuttle, Gillian Welch, and David Rawlings.
That would be spectacular
Is this heaven?
Molly's voice is so outstanding.
Other Worldly❤
Don't seem to have yet commented on this incandescent performance. Have now.

Hauntingly beautiful.

Sounds like "Where he met is final tune" to me.
"Where he met his final doom"... The main character in the story finally killed her husband who was treating her so badly over the years.
@@mattriley3550 "where he met his final doom." She kills her abusive husband at the end of the song.
Anyone know who is the originator of this song? ...or is it one of those old Americana folk songs passed down generations to which no one knows where it came from?
It's a Bluegrass song from Kentucky and was written some time at the end of the 19th century. So there you have it, American folk song.
I believe the original is Obery Ramsey in the 1930's. It then became popularized after the Grateful Dead started covering it.
Is there such a thing as being musically smitten?
Yes.
Thanks YT...
INCREDIBLE!!! Great vocals and phenomenal guitar sound and voicing. Perhaps a bit of compression on the guitar mic, but great sound over all.
Those 3 must have pushed the downthumb by accident.
Old Molly's a picker.
Nor should you be, ma’am.
I hate these lyrics. How do i relate to this?!
It's a folk song and so it tells a tale. Many folk songs are very dark. Life was dark. It still is.
You feel good that the woman finally stood up for herself and put an end to her abuse.
