Damn, this stuff entertained my parents? I am 71 and I know for sure that my son and his generation laugh at the movie Saturday Night Fever." Especially the dance scenes.
We have to find all this movie!! I wrote the biography of his soprano Alice Nielsen; lots of interesting stuff in it ;) "Alice Nielsen and the Gayety of Nations" on Amazon....
Mystery solved: Mary Martin was in the film but the female singer is Susanna Foster! Here's a clip, it has to be from the same movie: ruclips.net/video/H3UtklEwpIY/видео.html.
Released in 1939 "Hollywood's greatest year." or so they say. So WHY is it not available on DVD? I saw this for the first time in the late ' 60's on TV. I knew even then that it wasn't historically accurate and I didn't care. Tons of great Herbert melodies. Why are they torturing us????
Not sure about the female singer on the opening song, but the male is most definitely not Allan Jones, as he does not appear until a little later in the movie.
Allan Jones’ voice was definitely used in part, but I did not recognise his face in any of the shots. Maybe his voice was dubbed. Apparently his voice was dubbed for Dennis Morgan in at least one film, as a result of which he was given his chance. The rest, of course, is history.

Susanna Foster was a great friend of mine. I have several photos an letters still in my collection. Her voice and performance in Phantom are timeless.
Did she ever break glass with her voice
Great music! Great movie! Thanks for posting! 🙂🎶👏👏

Hello,
do you have the entire movie? Please. I write graduate work about Victor Herbert and I don´t know where I can find this movie.
It isnt Mary Martin but Susanna Foster who sang here with Allan Jones
Why didn't Mary Martin make more movies?
Was that really Mary Martin singing?
Mary Martin did sing in this movie! She played the role of the mother. This actress is Susanna Foster...famous for her high notes.
That's not Allan Jones at the beginning.
She was not 14 of course -- she was 26 and already the mother of Larry Hagman. But she's PLAYING a 14-year-old here.
Wrong. Wrong, wrong, and wrong.
Ms. Foster was born in 1924 and the film was released in 1939.
To clarify, you're talking about Mary Martin who was born in 1913...The lady singing here is not her but Susanna Foster...
I think it IS Allan Jones. But is she Mary Martin????
No. Gorgeous Susannah Foster at the beginning of a great career, followed by poverty and heartbreak.
She is not Mary Martin She is Susana Foster. Mary Martin wasnt a lyric soprano

This is not Mary Martin.
Her voice is pretty ordinary
