Considering the film was written for Sly Stallone, it's impressive it turned out as good as it did with Murphy in the lead. They should give his charisma and comedic skills more credit.

    • @SurvivorBri

Actually it wasn't written for Stallone. Sly wrote a script for BHC which was a much darker thriller but the studio rejected it. They wanted something light and comedic. Rumor has it that his movie COBRA was the original script he wrote for BHC. I'm not sure if that's true but it seems to make sense.

Probably due to the individual elements that are endearing. The handful of classic Eddie moments, Serge and his espresso with a lemon twist, Billy expressing concern for Taggart's bowels, the "Super Cop" story, and the music is great. But sure, the story is boilerplate.

Well it looks like time has proven that Siskel & Ebert's review of Beverly Hills Cop was totally wrong. Despite all their claims about the comedy being to "over the top" and the action being nothing but "stock" audiences across generations clearly disagree with both of them. This is what makes art so subjective. Siskel & Ebert at times completely forget how to have fun at the movies simply because it's their job to examine films.
Beverly Hills Cop is a surprisingly fresh, funny and exciting action comedy. All the actors in the film know exactly how to play their characters and how to set the tone of the film. It's gritty yet playful. It's crude yet heart warming. It's low brow but high class all at the same time. It's a total fish out of water story with a very interesting twist that's never boring. The soundtrack absolutely jams and even has an instrumental theme song that is so memorable it's become a flash point for an entire ere. Beverly Hills Cop is one of the greatest action comedies ever made and it's rather embarrassing that two of the most respected film critics were completely wrong about it.

The 2nd biggest hit of 1984, after Ghostbusters. I think if any mark was missed it was their opinion. I think it was subtle....it's not like nowadays when films about different races interacting are extremely exaggerated and exploitative. Like Eddie Murphys latest, the godawful Netflix "You People." This was just about a concerned friend who happened to be a cop investigating the murder if his close friend. Race had little to do with how he got along with everyone, he just did. Maybe that's how it was in the 80s before the media divided us even more. This movie is no A, but definitely entertaining and gets a B grade from me.

I kind of get what they're saying BUT it's a comedy lol. Comedies don't usually go for deep social commentary angle. It's dumb fun and it worked for what it was. BHC II however wasn't as good... There were a lot of weird cuts with traffic accidents AND the character of Billy changed in a very unnatural way in my opinion. If in the first he was kind of a shy square in the second he was kind of dumb, gun thirsty weirdo and was acting way too over the top... it's fine for what it was but felt unnatural for how the character was initially set up. But because of this review, I went in with very low expectations. All the seats were filled, likely because most were thinking with a cast like Beverly Hills Cop, how bad could it be? Well, the picture turned out to be the exact opposite of what Siskel and Ebert were saying this picture was. Everybody in the audience had a blast and were riveted to their seats throughout. They were right. Based on that scene of Eddie trying to check in, I just don't buy it and don't need to see it.

Forget what they said here on BHC. This is a fun, action filled movie that holds up even today.
At least see it ONCE before guessing you don't like it (based on one scene). The movie is MUCH, MUCH better than that single scene would have you think it is.

Totally agree. Very overrated movie. Always was. Great soundtrack fooled alot of people into thinking it's a good movie. Sequel is dreadful.

Murphy is excellent but the film is nothing to write home about. I felt the entire nature of the film is rather plastic; I just see a world established just for Murphy's comedic antics.

Ditto. Too much like one-guy army gung ho Rambo style run-ons. It wasn't until the 1990s that cinema industry started making very good solid action thrillers worth keeping that hold up to realistic crime war dramas. Top picks should be un-
    ground surreal cult films like
    The Zero Boys, Eyewitness,
    The Warriors, and Death Wish
    to name a few.

BHC may actually be Eddie's single best film - what are you talking about?
