The real interesting thing about the Djinn thing to me is that Hoban was originally the one who came up with (or at least popularised) offering to side out floodgates in mirror matches. Even in Nekroz format, his group were doing things like siding in floodgates and getting people to agree for both players to take out Djinn, Emptiness and Trishula so that they would think it's safe to side out their MSTs and Djinn outs only to be met with turn 1 Nat Beast + Mistake. Between that and the Djinn incident he's probably singlehandedly the reason for like 4 or 5 items in the 2.0 revisions of the policy documents.
I find it hard to believe that anyone “gentlemen” out of playing Djinn. Who in their right mind would take away a card that can win a game based solely on trusting your opponent to do the same.

Despite the advantage he gained, he lost that match (and the tourney as a whole iirc) and word got out and everyone started dunking on him. He then proceeded to double down in an ARG article which left his reputation in tatters.
There's a very high floor for how bad your life can get while still being someone that cares about competitive YGO, such a luxury pastime basically locks out anyone below "living the dream" status. And if at any point you threaten to fall out of that status, well you have bigger concerns than being an unpopular player

I still remeber for the longest time that in Middle School I was super into competitive yugioh and sorta just ended up almost religously following Patrick Hoban's career as I wanted to get better at the game. I wasn't a very good player as I couldn't afford cards to play any top decks (I mostly played pure atlanteans/ Budget Chaos for a long time) and but I remember when the Djinn Scandle/ cheat first happened was my first experience of "Parasocial pain" as my competitive hero did something so "terrible". As I've grown up I realized how minimal the situation was compared to my child response but to this day when I see his time in lists its the only thing I remember.
6:00 This was a C&D from Nihon Ad Systems over the use of imagery of the YGO animes being hosted where they could pursue legal action. To answer this at first, they removed all of the card art and anime imagery on the site and operated effectively "in the dark." Then a while later, you could find links to generate low quality imagery of just the card art in place of all the blank arts. After about a month or two of this, DN admins agreed to just shut it down. Then years later, one of the admins called Xteven spearheaded an effort that would develop the tools needed to create and run Dueling Book. With this iteration of the manual duelsim being devoid of the anime references, they've remained operational since. This is how I remember it all going down, though I'm probably still fuzzy on a few parts.
The story I find most interesting in Yugioh history was the tokyo dome riot. Basically Konami was underestimated the players and released a premium pack, and the capacity was so bad they had to apologize and mail said packs out
One thing I remember about Yugioh history was someone stole game off Elemental Hero Mariner's effect, which lets you attack directly if you control any backrow. It was from a SJC event feature match.
Wasn't there that one remote YCS with the extremely bad rulings regarding Sky striker and magical meltdown and shaddols. I forgot which one it was but damn that person was an official judge too. Edit: The instance that happened with Sky striker was when a Judge ruled in favor of Raye effect into Zeke despite it litt being the first line of text on Zeke
There was also the YCS in early 2020 where a judge ruled that if you activated True King Agnimizuid with misc as your only fire, then chained misc effect, you could just pop 2 babies with agnimizuid because it would "try to resolve as much as possible"
The second didn't happen, the timelines don't line up. It's just an urban legend. What actually happened is that after the original head of 5ds left they just didn't have a plan and the show collapsed, iirc.

6:56 the craziest thing about this story was that VALKYRIE WAS WINNING ANYWAYS (without bots). and when they re-did it, MST.TV's tombox essentially said to his entire fanbase in a video, to vote for inzektor when they re-do it, otherwise he *wont* do a give-away. so even AFTER they 'fixed' the botting issue. tombox STILL BRIBED THE VOTE on the second time round. essentially botting it again but with real accounts. also inzektors were not re-matched against valkyries in the voting process on take 2. instead valkyries were voted against something else that made the decision even easier and doomed them to lose. im not big on them myself. but it would have been nice to see what a deck with potential like valkyries or evil-eye could get. eventually, in the last few months of 2022, evil eye has received its support anyways, even though it also lost its vote. the whole thing is a mess and is still sort of a sore spot to me and many others, because most of everyone's favourite pet-archetypes/decks have been shrugged off to yugitubers scamming until they get what they want using their online presence to control the votes. (obviously not all, or even many yugitubers, just the ones that did it).
Oh, god, that is horrendous, some of those controversies. I didn't know that people were trying to smuggle cocaine through Yugioh packs. Insane. As far as controversies I remember, I can think of a few: 1. There's obviously the Great Yugioh Near-Apocalypse of 2008, where Konami caught former TCG distributor Upper Deck Entertainment making fake Yugioh cards and having them sold in bundle packs through a third party distributor, and they got into a legendary legal battle over it that caused duelists (myself included) to wonder if it would be the death of Yugioh entirely. This legal tussle is only second in nerd culture to Sega/Archie Comics v. Ken Penders. 2. I dunno if this was true for ever place that had it, but in the shop that I attended the Ancient Prophecy sneak preview event, the event packs given out were so insanely mispackaged for everyone, some having very few cards, some having a boatload of cards shoved into the packs (like double or triple of what it normally holds), and to this day, I don't recall anyone getting a single foil card in them; it was all commons and rares. 3. Personal Yugioh controversy here, but I remember being a passive member of an old, now defunct Yugioh forum, back in the day, for about a year or two, when suddenly some douchebag who had a beef with the administrator of the forum started spamming the sites with obscenities and guro photography for a day, was banned afterward and the mess took a day or two to clean up... and then, in retaliation, the asshole hacked the forum and DELETED IT OFF THE FACE OF THE INTERNET. Seriously, the reason why it became defunct was because the offender in question - not satisfied with disrupting it with gross photography and profanities, hacked the servers and deleted the site entirely, to the point where the administrator couldn't restore it. I don't remember what the forum was called, and I was one of the ones minding their own business there, but my god, was it a (quite literal) shitshow to see.
Anyone remember the oddity that was the Yugioh Structure Deck poll? There was this poll that Konami released asking people to pick which archetype got a Structure Deck of their own. We know that that ultimately resulted in Ice Barriers getting the win (for all the good it did them), but I most remember it for being the one where Barbaros (as in Beast King Barbaros) was an option. To this day, it is one of the strangest things Konami has done, like what kind of deck would they have made for Barbaros? Yes, it did later on give us King Beast Barbaros, which is cool... but Barbaros is usually a Skill Drain Beatdown strategy, and at the time I believe Skill Drain was still limited, if not outright banned.
Not sure if really controversial, but ah well. There's an xyz retrain of dark magician girl which is a rather strong monster, the problem is the art was done by Kazuki Takahashi and features pentagrams and ankhs, which are normally censored in Western releases, but Takahashi insisted that this art NEVER be changed, so now this card is unplayable in any capacity just cause Konami won't release it uncensored.
You know once upon a time first place at the Duelist Cup (or KC Cup as it was known in Duel LInks) won you entry into Worlds. So yeah Gera farming children got a lot of players who forgot that Konami discontinued Worlds cause of COVID really mad.
A note about the Create a Card Poll not brought up here. There was some...other YugiTubers trying to buy votes for certain decks (COUGH Inzektor COUGH) by offering give aways if they win, causing other decks that need support far more than them, to lose, despite being the favorite going into the final four rounds.
Personally I think Cimo is cheating his pulls in History of Yugioh. Not only does he not even show them, but he /somehow/ manages to pull exact copies of tournament winning decklists every week. I'm on to you Cimo.

How about another one: The First Forbidden List. Back in the earlier years of Yu-Gi-Oh!, many players were happy to know that certain cards would no longer appear, such as Yata-Garasu. However, there were actually a number of people furious that the cards they bought or traded for were now only useful outside any legitimate tournament play. I knew several people who claimed this to be the end of Yu-Gi-Oh! with this idea that any card could potentially be banned, and some who quit outright. It's truly funny to look back on those times and imagine a world where a Forbidden List was never implemented, and cards like Pot of Greed and Snatch Steal would still be legal at 1 in the modern day. There were so many 'staple' cards that it's difficult to say if we'd have any deck variety after a point.
I had that happen at regional. I played sky striker I put dice on my multirole to remember how many sky spells could bring back That was one of few times I got mad a judge.
I'm surprised the controversy surrounding the entire 1st edition release of Maximum Crisis didn't make it into the video, what with the immense amount of obscene short printings, with entire CASES of the pack not containing a single secret rare if I remember correctly.

it always will be for me the "upper Deck takes over" incident :) in the EU we were not allowed to play US American cards (actually you had to play your local language cards) since US were several sets further than us. We had LON and your Americans had IOC. So kinda during the qualifications of the german nationals Upperdeck took over and suddenly all cards were avilable. So we started playing with LON cards vs Chaos decks....and a friend of mine did win a qualification at first place with a LON beatdown deck with 3 Gemini Elfs and 3 Mechanical Chaser and 3 Kycoos since the mosnters were stronger than the monsters the chaos player played and the grave was mostly empty :D
So, this is one I considered for the thread, but didn't think it was a big enough thing - given it was started by a Twitch streamer/Yugituber and only had about a thousand people interested in it max, I wanna say, not an unreasonable thought. But - Gehfar! Format!, that weird attempt by a now-former Yugituber to make Yu-Gi-Oh Smogon. It went about as well as you would expect (read: HORRIBLY), for in hindsight just about every reason you'd expect.

Also, my memory is not perfect, so things are a bit hazy on dates for the most part. - May 2022 - JCD Godot/Jada pitches the idea of a Smogon-like format for Yu-Gi-Oh!, settles on the name "Gehfar!" - the German name of the "Danger!" archetype, to emulate Smogon being the German name of Koffing. - Also May 2022 - Jada, while on-stream discussing Gehfar!, is raided by MBT. Some interest is shown. - May to June 2022 - Jada, in this time period, streams the first four or so tournaments of Gehfar! UU. Stream numbers never surpass 100. - June to September 2022 - Jada is largely radio silent on Gehfar!, leaving most of the actual work being done to her mod team. (During this time, she read every Yu-Gi-Oh! card on EDOPro at the time and streamed her quote-unquote "main content" in a Cross-Anime Tournament.) - September 2022 - Jada does a late-night stream and says that, unless more people come to her Twitch streams, she is stopping everything Yu-Gi-Oh! related. - September 27th, 2022 - Jada releases (and, within 24 hours, unlists) a video titled "I can't take this any more" concerning the transphobia she (largely allegedly) suffers from in the Yu-Gi-Oh! community. Gehfar! Format at this point is dead. Most of the Gehfar! Counsel (who had been doing the actual work for the format between June and September) have either left Jada's Discord community or were banned by Jada herself at this point. - October 2022 - During this month, Jada wipes out all of her content on RUclips and attempts to rebrand. In an attempt to stream and confirm to her dwindling audience what is happening (by her own biased take), Stevie Blunder and Dire come in. Dire straight-out asks Jada to comment on the transphobia she (aain, largely allegedly) suffers from. Jada's response is, verbatim: "Fuck the Yu-Gi-Oh! community, all of you can suck a dick and die, I hope Kazuki Takahashi drowns again, I hope Farfa dies, I hope MBT dies, I hope Dire dies, I hope Di- I hope every single person in the Yu-Gi-Oh! community has a fucking dead family member tomorrow!" - Also October 2022 - Stevie Blunder learns (and subsequently makes public the fact) that Jada was trying to groom a 15 year old. - Some time between then and now - Jada rebranded again, with her RUclips channel, as of this writing, being called "Jada Kaiser".
Additional follow-up: - February 3rd, 2023: Jada uploads a video on Dark Magician. Video does somewhat well and comments are sparse but largely about the video. Konami makes worse banlist than players that's a fact. Players can make a 0% profit driven banlist. Konami always tries to use it to make money. Remember when card destruction came back when dangers came out? Rusty came back wheen torn scales came out? The TOSS format purge? Shadoll purge? Them not hitting tearlamemt, but Spright? (I could keep going) We need ARG/PPG back.
The purges are good, the banlist is bad when it doesn't purge stuff. The PPG banlist was bad because it didn't hit enough and the first thing people did under it was Normal Summon Aleister.
The funniest thing about Griezman being banned over racist charicatures of Asian people is that, about a year later, Konami made the ad for the Midterm Paradox set with, you guessed it, racist charicatures.

I still remeber for the longest time that in Middle School I was super into competitive yugioh and sorta just ended up almost religously following Patrick Hoban's career as I wanted to get better at the game. I wasn't a very good player as I couldn't afford cards to play any top decks (I mostly played pure atlanteans/ Budget Chaos for a long time) and but I remember when the Djinn Scandle/ cheat first happened was my first experience of "Parasocial pain" as my competitive hero did something so "terrible". As I've grown up I realized how minimal the situation was compared to my child response but to this day when I see his time in lists its the only thing I remember.
It's still a pretty scummy thing to do, to be fair.

This was a C&D from Nihon Ad Systems over the use of imagery of the YGO animes being hosted where they could pursue legal action. To answer this at first, they removed all of the card art and anime imagery on the site and operated effectively "in the dark." Then a while later, you could find links to generate low quality imagery of just the card art in place of all the blank arts. After about a month or two of this, DN admins agreed to just shut it down.
Then years later, one of the admins called Xteven spearheaded an effort that would develop the tools needed to create and run Dueling Book. With this iteration of the manual duelsim being devoid of the anime references, they've remained operational since.
This is how I remember it all going down, though I'm probably still fuzzy on a few parts.

The story I find most interesting in Yugioh history was the tokyo dome riot. Basically Konami was underestimated the players and released a premium pack, and the capacity was so bad they had to apologize and mail said packs out

One thing I remember about Yugioh history was someone stole game off Elemental Hero Mariner's effect, which lets you attack directly if you control any backrow. It was from a SJC event feature match.

Wasn't there that one remote YCS with the extremely bad rulings regarding Sky striker and magical meltdown and shaddols. I forgot which one it was but damn that person was an official judge too.
Edit: The instance that happened with Sky striker was when a Judge ruled in favor of Raye effect into Zeke despite it litt being the first line of text on Zeke
There was also the YCS in early 2020 where a judge ruled that if you activated True King Agnimizuid with misc as your only fire, then chained misc effect, you could just pop 2 babies with agnimizuid because it would "try to resolve as much as possible"

Two of my favorite changes are time and mandatory effects on field, oh and carley carmine was written out of 5ds due to cult activity.
The second didn't happen, the timelines don't line up. It's just an urban legend. What actually happened is that after the original head of 5ds left they just didn't have a plan and the show collapsed, iirc.

6:56 the craziest thing about this story was that VALKYRIE WAS WINNING ANYWAYS (without bots). and when they re-did it, MST.TV's tombox essentially said to his entire fanbase in a video, to vote for inzektor when they re-do it, otherwise he *wont* do a give-away. so even AFTER they 'fixed' the botting issue. tombox STILL BRIBED THE VOTE on the second time round. essentially botting it again but with real accounts.
also inzektors were not re-matched against valkyries in the voting process on take 2. instead valkyries were voted against something else that made the decision even easier and doomed them to lose.
im not big on them myself. but it would have been nice to see what a deck with potential like valkyries or evil-eye could get. eventually, in the last few months of 2022, evil eye has received its support anyways, even though it also lost its vote.
the whole thing is a mess and is still sort of a sore spot to me and many others, because most of everyone's favourite pet-archetypes/decks have been shrugged off to yugitubers scamming until they get what they want using their online presence to control the votes. (obviously not all, or even many yugitubers, just the ones that did it).
Oh, god, that is horrendous, some of those controversies. I didn't know that people were trying to smuggle cocaine through Yugioh packs. Insane.
As far as controversies I remember, I can think of a few:
1. There's obviously the Great Yugioh Near-Apocalypse of 2008, where Konami caught former TCG distributor Upper Deck Entertainment making fake Yugioh cards and having them sold in bundle packs through a third party distributor, and they got into a legendary legal battle over it that caused duelists (myself included) to wonder if it would be the death of Yugioh entirely. This legal tussle is only second in nerd culture to Sega/Archie Comics v. Ken Penders.
2. I dunno if this was true for ever place that had it, but in the shop that I attended the Ancient Prophecy sneak preview event, the event packs given out were so insanely mispackaged for everyone, some having very few cards, some having a boatload of cards shoved into the packs (like double or triple of what it normally holds), and to this day, I don't recall anyone getting a single foil card in them; it was all commons and rares.
3. Personal Yugioh controversy here, but I remember being a passive member of an old, now defunct Yugioh forum, back in the day, for about a year or two, when suddenly some douchebag who had a beef with the administrator of the forum started spamming the sites with obscenities and guro photography for a day, was banned afterward and the mess took a day or two to clean up... and then, in retaliation, the asshole hacked the forum and DELETED IT OFF THE FACE OF THE INTERNET. Seriously, the reason why it became defunct was because the offender in question - not satisfied with disrupting it with gross photography and profanities, hacked the servers and deleted the site entirely, to the point where the administrator couldn't restore it. I don't remember what the forum was called, and I was one of the ones minding their own business there, but my god, was it a (quite literal) shitshow to see.
That guy in the last point clearly has no life whatsoever, much less self-dignity and respect.
Anyone remember the oddity that was the Yugioh Structure Deck poll? There was this poll that Konami released asking people to pick which archetype got a Structure Deck of their own. We know that that ultimately resulted in Ice Barriers getting the win (for all the good it did them), but I most remember it for being the one where Barbaros (as in Beast King Barbaros) was an option. To this day, it is one of the strangest things Konami has done, like what kind of deck would they have made for Barbaros? Yes, it did later on give us King Beast Barbaros, which is cool... but Barbaros is usually a Skill Drain Beatdown strategy, and at the time I believe Skill Drain was still limited, if not outright banned.
Not sure if really controversial, but ah well. There's an xyz retrain of dark magician girl which is a rather strong monster, the problem is the art was done by Kazuki Takahashi and features pentagrams and ankhs, which are normally censored in Western releases, but Takahashi insisted that this art NEVER be changed, so now this card is unplayable in any capacity just cause Konami won't release it uncensored.

A note about the Create a Card Poll not brought up here. There was some...other YugiTubers trying to buy votes for certain decks (COUGH Inzektor COUGH) by offering give aways if they win, causing other decks that need support far more than them, to lose, despite being the favorite going into the final four rounds.
Personally I think Cimo is cheating his pulls in History of Yugioh. Not only does he not even show them, but he /somehow/ manages to pull exact copies of tournament winning decklists every week. I'm on to you Cimo.

I don't know the guy personally, but I can't imagine him being THAT big of an asshole with an ego THAT fragile.
Similar to the counters thing, Bushiroad updated their floor rules a few years ago to ban using unofficial tools to track power, shield, and crits…and every event has ignored this since, including worlds. Not sure if the rule is still there but uh…yeahh

How about another one: The First Forbidden List. Back in the earlier years of Yu-Gi-Oh!, many players were happy to know that certain cards would no longer appear, such as Yata-Garasu. However, there were actually a number of people furious that the cards they bought or traded for were now only useful outside any legitimate tournament play. I knew several people who claimed this to be the end of Yu-Gi-Oh! with this idea that any card could potentially be banned, and some who quit outright.
It's truly funny to look back on those times and imagine a world where a Forbidden List was never implemented, and cards like Pot of Greed and Snatch Steal would still be legal at 1 in the modern day. There were so many 'staple' cards that it's difficult to say if we'd have any deck variety after a point.
I had that happen at regional. I played sky striker I put dice on my multirole to remember how many sky spells could bring back That was one of few times I got mad a judge.

it always will be for me the "upper Deck takes over" incident :) in the EU we were not allowed to play US American cards (actually you had to play your local language cards) since US were several sets further than us. We had LON and your Americans had IOC.
So kinda during the qualifications of the german nationals Upperdeck took over and suddenly all cards were avilable. So we started playing with LON cards vs Chaos decks....and a friend of mine did win a qualification at first place with a LON beatdown deck with 3 Gemini Elfs and 3 Mechanical Chaser and 3 Kycoos since the mosnters were stronger than the monsters the chaos player played and the grave was mostly empty :D
So, this is one I considered for the thread, but didn't think it was a big enough thing - given it was started by a Twitch streamer/Yugituber and only had about a thousand people interested in it max, I wanna say, not an unreasonable thought.
But - Gehfar! Format!, that weird attempt by a now-former Yugituber to make Yu-Gi-Oh Smogon. It went about as well as you would expect (read: HORRIBLY), for in hindsight just about every reason you'd expect.

Format! and some of the things that happened afterwards - bear in mind that I do not have the insight any of the mod team at the time would have, nor do I have contacts to them. If one of them happens to find this comment chain, maybe they can elaborate on what went down on the backend side of things. Also, my memory is not perfect, so things are a bit hazy on dates for the most part.
- May 2022 - JCD Godot/Jada pitches the idea of a Smogon-like format for Yu-Gi-Oh!, settles on the name "Gehfar!" - the German name of the "Danger!" archetype, to emulate Smogon being the German name of Koffing.
- Also May 2022 - Jada, while on-stream discussing Gehfar!, is raided by MBT. Some interest is shown.
- May to June 2022 - Jada, in this time period, streams the first four or so tournaments of Gehfar! UU. Stream numbers never surpass 100.
- June to September 2022 - Jada is largely radio silent on Gehfar!, leaving most of the actual work being done to her mod team. (During this time, she read every Yu-Gi-Oh! card on EDOPro at the time and streamed her quote-unquote "main content" in a Cross-Anime Tournament.)
- September 2022 - Jada does a late-night stream and says that, unless more people come to her Twitch streams, she is stopping everything Yu-Gi-Oh! related.
- September 27th, 2022 - Jada releases (and, within 24 hours, unlists) a video titled "I can't take this any more" concerning the transphobia she (largely allegedly) suffers from in the Yu-Gi-Oh! community. Gehfar! Format at this point is dead. Most of the Gehfar! Counsel (who had been doing the actual work for the format between June and September) have either left Jada's Discord community or were banned by Jada herself at this point.
- October 2022 - During this month, Jada wipes out all of her content on RUclips and attempts to rebrand. In an attempt to stream and confirm to her dwindling audience what is happening (by her own biased take), Stevie Blunder and Dire come in. Dire straight-out asks Jada to comment on the transphobia she (aain, largely allegedly) suffers from. Jada's response is, verbatim: "Fuck the Yu-Gi-Oh! community, all of you can suck a dick and die, I hope Kazuki Takahashi drowns again, I hope Farfa dies, I hope MBT dies, I hope Dire dies, I hope Di- I hope every single person in the Yu-Gi-Oh! community has a fucking dead family member tomorrow!"
- Also October 2022 - Stevie Blunder learns (and subsequently makes public the fact) that Jada was trying to groom a 15 year old.
- Some time between then and now - Jada rebranded again, with her RUclips channel, as of this writing, being called "Jada Kaiser".
Additional follow-up:
- February 3rd, 2023: Jada uploads a video on Dark Magician. Video does somewhat well and comments are sparse but largely about the video. The odd comment concerning some of the things listed above are made and, subsequently, deleted by Jada.
- February 8th, 2023: Jada uploads an hour long video titled "My response" - in an attempt to explain away and justify the aforementioned list of things above - mainly the attempted grooming and declaring how the entire Yu-Gi-Oh community can suck a dick and die. Stevie Blunder makes a 15-minute video pretty much blasting down every point Jada had within 24 hours.
- About February 23rd, 2023: Jada deletes the "My response" video, as it has become clear that most people don't believe her.
I have no goddamn clue how Jada could possibly think she could ProJared her way out of something there is documented proof of.
