In my shop we have one more rule: drop the saw guard/guide, down to the table when you are done every time. This covers all or most of the blade so it protects the blade and you at all times. Also, make sure your table is level to the blade and secured. Nothing worse than the table dropping while you are turning a blank on the saw..
Good practice, Jeff. Stay safe. Happy Turning!
When the bandsaw isn’t in use, are you supposed to loosen the tension?
I always remove the tension on the blade when not using the saw. If you do not there is a danger you may distort the tyres, and you are putting unnecessary strain on the frame of the saw and the blade. See what the manufacturer of your saw recommends.😀🇬🇧
@@filmbluff99 thank you!
Yes, that's not a bad idea. A tension blade left for a long time can smash the tires a bit in one area, etc. Happy Turning! Kent
A tip, when you replace the blade of your band saw, take a file and file the sharp edge off the back of the blade, both sides. That way the back of the bladed has less of a tendency to dig in to the wood.
Good idea Harold. Thank you for writing and sharing!
When you say “Basics”, you really mean Basics. Great video for someone who’s new to a bandsaw.
Thanks. Yup, someone needs to cover this stuff. Happy Turning!
Excellent tip. Taught my son that area is the RED ZONE. Same thing on the tablesaw. Hands never go in that area. That is what push-sticks are for. Also, never push your finger/hand towards the blade no matter how far back you are from the blade. Stay on the side away from RED ZONE. So important.
Right on, Lou! Be safe!
That bit about the blade continuing to turn for quite a while after the motor is turned off is CRUCIAL, in my opinion. My saw doesn't have it, but I'm kinda surprised that a blade brake isn't a mandatory safety feature.
I agree Michael. Especially if you are wearing hearing protection. It seems as if the saw is off and "safe" when it's really just as dangerous as being on. Stay safe and Happy Turning!
Hi Kent, excellent video on the safe use of bandsaws; thanks for posting.
It’s time for a new blade on my 14” saw but an exhaustive search, I’m unable to find a 93 1/2”, 3 tpi with a thickness of 0.035” as you recommended.
Could you provide the manufacturer of your blade? Not sure if they have blades of this thickness for smaller saws but worth a try.
Thanks in advance and keep the great videos coming! 👏
John
John, you might want to check with a custom blade shop like this one www.bandsawbladesdirect.com/ All the best to you and Happy Turning! Kent
Any chance you could do a video showing any routine periodic maintenance you perform on your lathe?
Thank you for writing and sharing! Yup, got one of those ruclips.net/video/MeD-7kodVzg/видео.html Happy Turning! Kent
Thanks Kent, Great Safety thoughts for the bandsaw.
You are very welcome, Tiel. Happy Turning!
I have a 470mm 18 Inch , 2100w / 3cv , 230V , im hapy whih it , it do its job , but in dream of a 700mm / 27.5 inch 4cv 360V bandsaw , but it wont fit in my actual shop . "from south france"
Sounds nice. Thank you for writing and sharing!
I’ve got the Grizzly 550 14” and I really like it. The tension guide is right on the saw. Great video.
Very nice!
Great tips and tricks for safely using your band saw.
Thank you, Jean! Stay safe. Happy Turning!
the height of your band saw will almost always be 1/4" less than the size of the log you want to put through it. I have spent hours with chisels removing just enough to get it under the blade guide.
LOL, perhaps that's an unpublished Murphy's Law. ;)
Experiencia pura y absoluta!!! Excelentes tus comentarios!! Muchas gracias por compartirlos! Un abrazo!

Con gusto. Me alegro de que hayas disfrutado de este video. ¡Gracias por escribir desde Uraguay! ¡Todo lo mejor para ti y Happy Turning! Kent
I'm having issues with my bandsaw right now I can't cut a straight line for my life The blade twists whenever I start to cut I can't find anything anywhere about why it's happening I know this is a basics video but hopefully you have some insight
There is a good chance the blade is unevenly dulled. This same issue happens with chainsaw blades. If an area of the blade is dulled or damaged, the blade will drift or twist and make a clean pass almost impossible. Change the blade and I bet you see an improvement. Happy Turning!
@@TurnAWoodBowl it's a brand new blade
Anyone have recommendations for. 035 blades? I'm having a hard time finding any that aren't $$$. Thanks
Do you use a 0 clearance insert? I notice yours has a large opening
Scott, Nope, just stock guides. Happy Turning! Kent
If you have the jingles, try a Lenox Tri-Master 1/2" x 0.035 3tpi. It will cut any wood and most metals. Just be sure that you bandsaw is set up properly. I advise a 16-18" bandsaw.
I'll check it out. Thank you, Bob! Happy Turning!
I use the Carter Products greenwood blade for my 14" bandsaw. I was trying to find the thickness of the blade, but couldn't find it. Though, I've had really good luck with them. I do know they use carbon steel vs silicon steel. So, they tend to stay sharper for a little longer. "More blade" for the buck.
Sounds good, thank you for sharing! Happy Turning!
Absolutely great Information. And I will reinforce what you say. "Bigger' is Better" . Yes, get the machine for the work you intend, but It's nice to have a little in reserve. It smoothes out that difficult wet wood, without bogging down, and there always seems to be a blank that needs cutting down to size, a little larger than you need to mount on the Lathe.
Absolutely! If you've tried to cut a too large piece on a saw too small, you know what you really need. ;) Happy Turning!
Yup! I have the Grizzly Ultimate 14” bandsaw. The original guides were crap so swapped them out for Carter guides. Game changer. I runs like a different saw. Also retired it for 220VAC. Plenty of power. Eats 4x4s and large bowl blanks with ease.
Sounds perfect, Robert. Enjoy, be safe, and Happy Turning!
soak the tire in hot water before trying to install it.
Good idea, Woody! Thank you, and Happy Turning!
I’m sorry , too much speaks, just show us, like Diresta! Listened for 20mins, but nothing to see.
Sorry. This is an information channel with lots of info to share.
Perfect timing. I'm in the market trying to determine which band saw to buy. Thanks.
Mark, great. Probably go bigger than you might have been thinking. Happy Turning!
Good advice Kent. I've been cutting some greenish ash which leaves a layer of sticky sawdust on the inside of the blade. I wont tell you how I get it off because you'd probably throw a fit. Best regards.
John, LOL we've all done whatever it takes to get the conclusion we're looking for. Just be safe. Happy Turning! Kent
@@TurnAWoodBowl Will do Kent, I like my fingers. Thanks. 🙃🙃
I like the Timber Wolf blades. I've had good luck with them.
Lou, I agree. Happy Turning!
Good video Kent. Thanks. Blade tips are pro.
Thanks 👍
Another good discussion about machinery.
Thank you, Howard. Happy Turning!
Enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing
My pleasure, Lou.
