ULF POSCHARDT: "Freedom for the enemies of freedom is a big problem!"
In a recent development at the Ministry of Education, Research Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger has announced the temporary retirement of her State Secretary Sabine Döring. This decision followed an internal review initiated by Döring after more than 100 university professors and staff at the Free University of Berlin criticized the way Palestinian demonstrators were treated in an open letter. The demonstrators had set up a protest camp at the university in May and chanted anti-Semitic slogans, leading to a controversial debate.
The police had to intervene to clear the camp, while the university professors' letter did not address the anti-Semitic statements. Döring's actions to review the funding for the letter's signatories raised concerns about trust in the ministry and its neutrality in funding science, which, according to Minister Stark-Watzinger, should be done "according to scientific criteria and not political ideology."
The affair has also put the president of the Technical University of Berlin, Geraldine Rauch, in the spotlight, who is being criticized for liking an anti-Semitic post on social media. While Rauch retains her position, Döring faces serious consequences. These incidents raise important questions about academic freedom, the political neutrality of funding measures and the accountability of university employees.
