First-time visitor. I'm a 66-year-old professor who has, of late, been getting back into the sports that I abandoned after high school. I got back into tennis (and my wife got me into pickleball, as old people do 🤣), then skateboarding 2 years ago during the pandemic. But, I've also been itching to get back into surfing as well. I picked up surfing at 58yrs wiser living in CO, now living in the South it's all a dream of. Panhandle of FL offers some breaks, SC and NC have some good waves and Jacksonville FL is the best waves coming from GA. I've always had a skateboard around, great for agility and core strength. Please keep the content coming, CA dreamin.

Looked like a very nice day! I used to think I couldn't surf unless I went with someone but necessity made me try so now I go alone all the time. There's always someone to talk to or give encouragement to those just getting started. Still it's fun to go with my daughter and son in law when they have time - maybe this weekend (even if it's crowded LOL). Have fun and stay safe!

It was a bit awkward at first with this board since it's kinda small to knee paddle (usually it's for boards 9' and longer, this one is an 8'6) but eventually you get used to it. Like a bicycle, it's easier to balance when you're moving, so try to get some speed paddling prone before you pop up to your knees!
super nice. to your point at 1:10 - if u get a 360 camera (insta 360 or something), then it films everything around you and you can reframe the shot after the fact i nthe edit. to frame you surfing with whatever crop you want! :)

Man, I haven't surfed San O in Years, I forget how fun that wave is for long boarding. I think it was the first place I ever went left on a wave. Oh and btw, those were military helicopters doing their flight hours being that the marine base is right next door to San O.... oh and yes, that wetsuit looks great on you.
@@JessicaMiyukiArt Yeah, some of the military activity you see there is pretty cool. I'm up in Santa Barbara and when ever I get the chance to head to SD I always try to find time to hit that spot, my favorite, but it's been a while.
Not a dumb question at all! It really depends on what time of day I surf. I'm not much of a breakfast person so if I'm surfing early morning I probably won't have much, maybe some coconut water. If it's later in the day I'll probably have already had a meal within those 3 hours, but I don't like to eat much too close to surfing since it makes me feel uncomfortable paddling on my stomach. Maybe close to an hour before I'll have a banana or some crackers but not really anything within half an hour of paddling out

Yay the trash pickup will get you really good waves! Ah I used to go to Blackies all the time when I lived in North OC... And that first jetty up.. was it 28th? Such fun waves. But parking can get crazy in the summer!

If you can find the mellow days like in your clips, it can still be fun too n less crowded. Recently the jetty n further up too. I can meet up of you ever want to surf North OC! Are you using an older model GoPro? The newer GoPros and DJI Action Cams have a much wider POV than what you seem to be using, I think it would be worth the upgrade if you're able to! I just got the DJI Action 4 and it definitely is much wider than this which is ideal if you're holding the camera and don't have an extender :)
Ohhhh you're so right!! I just looked up the specs since I assumed my GoPro 10 was pretty similar to the 12 but the 12 does have a way wider field of view!! I use my phone for shots outside the water but for surf shots a wider POV would be super helpful. Thank you!! Might be time for an upgrade, I would have totally overlooked it

It’s kinda in between, it’s an 8’6 epoxy with a three fin setup but I ride it as a single fin. I’m pretty small so it’s enough length for me but not a “proper” longboard. For comparison my fun board is 7’2 or 7’6

I used to cross hatch wax my board (my Japanese side) then I went to swirls (my Haole side)

The water bottle was a gift sent from Olukai! I'm not sure they sell water bottles regularly but I work with them to create content for their footwear

This is actually not SD! For San Diego I've surfed in Tourmaline, Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, and some other places in North County SD

Is this board a longboard or a fun board?
It’s kinda in between, it’s an 8’6 epoxy with a three fin setup but I ride it as a single fin. I’m pretty small so it’s enough length for me but not a “proper” longboard. For comparison my fun board is 7’2 or 7’6
