All this talk about the W220 being unreliable, yet here we are with 275k miles. M113 engine and 722.6 transmission make a pretty bulletproof pair. You’ll have a lot more trouble getting a newer S-class with an M278 or M176 to go that far!

I’ve owned a W220 for the past decade. I’ve never had a problem with the car, the air suspension is more reliable than people make it out to be. You can’t just replace one strut if it fails. You do them all at once and refresh the whole system then you’ll get another decade out of the air suspension.

    • @thearousedeunuch

I completely understand where you're coming from! With the economy being so unpredictable, it's definitely not the best time to spend a lot of money on a car. Instead, I highly recommend seeking the help of a financial advisor who can grow your money and manage your portfolio. They have the expertise to guide you towards more profitable investments and provide valuable insights. Plus, having a portfolio manager on your side brings so many benefits. It's all about securing a brighter financial future, regardless of the state of the economy.

Deferred maintenance - people buy expensive cars and don't maintain them, which means any downstream owner will have a HUGE bill to fix all the deferred maintenance. If you buy a well maintained one AND keep up with the maintenance, it's not that bad, cheaper than buying a new car.

The fact that Mercedes has over 200k is a testimate that it must have been fairly reliable to get to that mileage or prolly would have met it's fate along time ago..now the question is how much did the those 200k cost In maintenance ? That's the main issue with these brands. Save the infinity. The infinity brand does not hold the same value as a Lexus so a similar Lexus gx with the same mileage condition prolly be worth double. I wouldn't touch anything with 200k on it just not worth the trouble.

This is particularly susceptible to long oil change intervals.

The w220s (in my area in the northeast at least) have begun their slow appreciation over the past decade, now that all the clapped out examples have been totalled-mechanically or physically- by their seventh or eighth owner. The leftover examples are mostly old doctors cars or well maintained examples. I could have bought an s550 for 3k a decade ago and now you'd be lucky to get into that car for less than 8k.

Usually listen to it in my car so I don't catch every bit. I did want to add that I bought a 03 Mercedes E class used in 08 with I think 55kiles and took it in to get It checked out by Mercedes specific mechanic and he says actually it's in really good shape but the motor mounts were leaking They were some special Mercedes thing that used oil or hydraulic pressure or something to shift the engine with the car for better balance or something and they were leaking and had to be fixed. That and the specific windshield wiper with the rain sensing windshield which I didn't know as much about cars back then so that could have been a scam and I could have maybe used another type but I was recommended place by a friend to do them so supposedly I wasn't getting ripped off but the motor mounts were $1,500 and the wipers were like $200 if I remember right. Now I will tell you that car was awesome. Drove great! Super fun but damn it was expensive and the insurance was like 300 when my prior car an '02 explorer i no no this whose insurance was like 120 a month for the same coverage.

I bought a 1997 Mercedes Benz E320 Tan/Tan with 97,000 Miles when purchased was in excellent condition inside and out, paid 3,700 for the car back in 2011. Drove that car with regular maintenance only, besides I had to replace the drivers Side Front A arm. That was the only thing other than say tires, brakes, oil changes you know real regular stuff. So not a lot invested into maintaining the car, I also do all my own vehicle work. When I finally retired her (owned that car for 6 years) from my ownership she had 320,000 Miles on the OD. No engine lights nothing wrong with her, and that car if I needed, would still shit and get. That car was a sleeper, no one ever thought it would be as quick as it was, and it wasn't even an AMG. I truly miss that car. I have to say, was one of my most skeptical purchases, I was so nervous about that..... But that car was a Gem and a TANK (5 kids). That car made me love Mercedes Benz. (maybe just that one, she may have been my Diamond, once in a life time car)

The Benz will TRULY break you when (not IF) it breaks...especially the 4Matic and air suspension, not to mention all those electronic gubbins that start failing and it just never seems to stop. At 275K miles, the tranny is living on borrowed time; it costs twice what the car is worth.
The Infiniti is MUCH less expensive to fix, but not Corolla cheap. Beware the miles.
The Alfa is notorious for worrisome problems and spotty dealer network. Repeat after me, "There ain't NO cheap Italian high-end cars."

Lots to learn in life, you have. Been driving Infiniti VQ's since 2010, 21+ years in the RCAF making 135K a year as a Maj. Home owner, two paid-for VQ's in the driveway. Extremely reliable cars. 😊

@@jacquesc3166 I said nothing about their reliability. My comment was based on all the internet memes that people buy Nissan/Infiniti because their dealers sell to anyone despite their financial situation. Dodge and Nissan are the two car makers that will sell you a brand new car for no money down with a 400 credit score.

There is no such thing as a cheap Mercedes. There's a reason why the depreciation is so steep. They're unreliable and repair costs are astronomical.

As long as you go into it with eyes wide open with regards to repair prices, there’s nothing wrong with buying a “cheap” luxury car. If you are mentally prepared for repairs that can cost two or even three times more than a “domestic” car and are willing to follow recommended maintenance schedules (although I would change oil every 5K miles instead of 7.5 or 10K as some service guides suggest), you can be OK. It’s all the cost of doing business in the luxe car world.
