Tuesday marks the 60th anniversary of the historic flight of Aurora 7 ..... Scott had real MOXIE ...... above and beyond "The Right Stuff" ...... he pushed his Aurora 7 capsule to the limits of its limited capabilities, then went on to set a record with Project SEALAB as an "aquanaut", spending 30 days underwater..... he would go on to help design the Apollo Lunar Lander, and would help with underwater training of future astronauts for spacewalks..... A real American hero of my parent's generation!

    It was more important for
Malcolm Scott Carpenter to be one of the first seven
American astronauts than to be first.

Very interesting! I was 6 years old at the time, and I remember being interested in the space program at that time. I am still interested in what is happening today

A somewhat different series of events than those given by Tom Wolfe in his book "The Right Stuff". As I recall, the book implied rather forcefully that Carpenter had screwed up the mission, endangered his own life, and had subsequently left NASA after it became apparent that he would never be allowed to fly in space again.

That's a Redstone rocket ... Carpenter flew on an Atlas quite incredible mix up there

We were all totally absorbed in each of these flights. Traffic stopped, classes stopped. It was amazing. This vid has a lot of bogus info though. They show the capsule on a Redstone booster. Carpenter was not the original prime pilot. Scott was a scapegoat for "astro-power" payback. The capsule had faulty thrusters which kept putting him off attitude. It's a shame he was blackballed by Chris Kraft. No justice there.

It's a CGI animation of an advanced lunar rover. It shows up in various NASA videos from time to time.

There is a safe, durable and reliable method for the
American astronauts to explore our world.

Yeah, I had originally regarded it as almost a documentary but have discovered it's inaccuracies over the years. I hadn't realized that Carpenter was another of them.
I often wonder why Wolfe had such a burr up his ass about Grissom.

This is the public story NASA and Carpenter agreed upon, but Scott was blackballed by Chris Kraft. It had to do with putting the Mercury Seven in their places, and getting control of the astronauts. Furthermore, Scott was a bit more interested in the experience, rather than the space craft. There is much, much, more involved to his story. The competition was hot to get a seat, and eliminating Carpenter and Glenn was welcomed by the others.

He never flew again as he deliberately disobeyed Chiristopher Kraft's orders as he wanted to do some sightseeing I heard.

He made some statements about mission control that went over poorly. He had been assigned and taken Deke Slayton's capsule and that went over poorly. He and John Glenn were extremely close, as was his wife to Jackie Kennedy. That went over poorly. The flaws in his capsule were glossed over to put blame on Scott and keep him out of the pilot rotation. It was basically character assassination by a tight cadre of desk jockeys and the other five Mercury astronauts.

Carpenter took a leave from NASA to work on Sealab, and was unable to return to NASA because of an arm injury, not because of his performance...

It is SAD when NASA itself presents a video of an historic event and a national hero and CANNOT get the Fraking rockets correct in the presentation! They speak of MA-7 on LC-14 and they show a Mercury REDSTONE and LC-5! What NASA intern in the history office made this thing?
