661 FTW. Mine is stock with an Egan Straight Shot muffler. She rips with the oiler wide open on 36" bar with full chisel chain grind. Switching to 25" bar and 8 tooth drive sprocket later this summer for firewood. :-)

I ran both my 660 and new 661 back to back earlier at the Connecticut gtg and Julian is 100% correct in this video. 661 in stock form walks allover the 660. I'm Hooked! The 661 is way better ,smooth in the cut, better a/v better fuel economy, way better throttle response. Just a pleasant saw to run.

Old video so who knows the answer?
Was the baffling around the cylinder exhaust port in the rear muffler section removed or modified? In stock form the 660 is very
restricted and choked up in that area.
IMHO it would not matter how many ports are in the front cover if the OEM baffling around the cylinder exhaust port has not been removed.
The 660 sounds like it is a bit rich.
I have respect for the the man that did this video. He did a lot to further the interest in his favorite chainsaw brand.

local saw shop recommended against it here (2017). to many were coming back(I think fuel issues). he said wait a year or two for stihl to work out the problem. picked up a 461, nice saw but not as strong as my 660. as of last year I only knew of one cutter that had one. probably 8 or more companies working for mills here. retired last winter so I don't know if things changed. good video

Yours is one of the best comparison videos that I've seen of course the only person that really knows is the person running the saw you seem to rock the saws about the same but I could take those two saws and make 1 go slower by bogging it down with the tiny bit more pressure which would make a difference in time anybody who's ran a big saw with the Big Chain knows what I'm talking about however if I was going to run a saw every day for my job there's no question which one I would be running everyday but because I bought one for fun and to make a few things I paid around $400 for a 52 inch chain and bar and a brand new saw that tears it up. But like I said if I did it for a living I wouldn't be buying the name brand

My 066 magnum was able to make giant drink coasters out of a Hard Black Maple that was 31" inside the bark and it completed the cut in 45 seconds, so possibly the 660 model wasn't as hot as either an older 7.6 hp 066 magnum or the new 661.

I don't think that the ms660 was given a chance to show its full strength, because it can be seen that at some point near the middle of the tree, the throttle is forced and reduced and thus slows down. it has never lost power if it is done correctly. Maybe the advertisement for ms661 is looking for such results. 😉

how can a saw with a shorter stroke produce more torque if both have the same compression ratio? the laws of physics would say that the longer lever would produce more torque given the equal amount of pressure. i would like some one who can explain this to answer since i don't want a response from some one who knows nothing about physics

My next saw I’ll be purchasing will either be
MS 660 or 661 I know 661is quicker in the cut and has more power but not sure If it’s as reliable like 660 there’s been lots of comments made about M Tronic not been reliable in 661.

I've seen lots of comments about carb problems in all kinds of saws, does that make you not buy one with regular carb? Manufacturing or reliability problems are rare to begin with, and extremely rare due to a physical or electronic failure for both the mtronic and regular carb. Most issues almost always come from stale fuel. An m-tronic carb is still a regular carb with a solenoid attached, its not a nuclear reactor, you change the rubber parts and membranes just like any other carb. Same story about 500i, people talking that its not PROVEN reliable yet because its "new" tech and muh computer. Yea, new since 2012 when they first put it in their concrete cutter, water and dust galore and the electronics didn't give a damn. Car has electronically controlled injection since the 1990s yet nobody even thinks it's not reliable.
That being said, I'd go mtronic. Not touching a regular carb ever again, its just too nice having a perfect mixture and torque, at all times. No screwdriver involved.

  • @raymorrison5006

To me that proves is better leave the saw alone and let it run stock than do anything to the engine

    • @lucasmarkland2863
      @lucasmarkland2863 5 лет назад +1

Idk, a simple muffler mod helps the saw run cooler and better. Which helps the saw live longer. The EPA forces saw companies to meet emissions regulations that hurt the longevity of the saw

Could not agree more. There is a NON-M TRONIC MS661 available here in the U.S. by special order from your local Stihl dealer! I'm a timber cutting contractor, have two MS661 M TRONIC's and have had nothing but trouble with these saws. They bog off of idle, die at idle and the shroud mounting falls apart in a matter of days. They are very smooth, have great top end power and good fuel economy. I'm currently running an MS660 and never pick up a 661 unless I absolutely have to.
Just so you know, I have upgraded the carb, ignition module and fuel solenoids on the 661's and they still bog coming off of idle and sometimes just die sitting there idling. I plan on getting the non-MTRONIC 661 next logging season.
