    Hey CAP, great effort. Although, you did some mistakes that didn't help you for the Marshal holding.
    When you set the radial 160, you should actually set a course of 340. Because it s the next inbound course you ll follow to the carrier. It complicates your life too cuz then you are outbound when you reach your EAT and need to turn back, re-intercept and so on.
    Also, you need to reach the Marshall fix at a precise timing to commence the approach. It s not guesswork, you can help yourself with simple rules.
    Rule of thumb you can use is your Mach number... At 250kts, and at the altitude you had, you were doing M 0.42 so more or less, 4.2Nm per minute. If you are 7 NM from the fix, you need 1'45" to get there (roughly) this will help you to get more precise with your timings.
    In civil aviation, we do 1' holdings, meaning that the turns and the in/out bound legs are 1'. Here, the legs are 2' but the turns are still 1' so, you turn with "rate 1". Meaning that you need 1' to accomplish 180deg (3 deg a second). To know the bank you need, use this formula: (TAS/10)+7. So at 250 kts IAS (let's pretend here IAS equals TAS just for the example), you need 25+7=32 degrees of bank.
    If you wanna know your TAS, another rule of thumb is IAS+(fl/2). So, flying at 250kts at fl140, it's gonna be 250+70= 320kts TAS....
    Try to use these rules of thumbs for your IFR Work, it will make your life easy...

    Correct glide scope with throttle, not trim

  • @swiftplus175
    @swiftplus175 4 года назад +13

    Proper procedure would be to keep at 1200 feet until glideslope needle comes down to you, being already trimmed on speed. Then with the glide slope needle centering VVI, reduce throttle to a small descent following the needle going down, keeping it centered. Excellent sceond try tough !

    A very good and serious instruction video!!! I am just thinking how the h...… anyone can remember all that and still concentrate on flying the plane. For many hours to come I will need that picture on the desk in front of me (and still be able to mess it up). Some of the more difficult - you showed that - is to keep compensating for the forward movement of the boat, which will make it look as if you are drifting left. So fly straight and drift right ;-)

      I have a question: What would happen if you have a bunch of planes to land and a lot of bolters? Do you have to hold up the stack? How does that work? If someone is commencing every 60 seconds That does not leave much time for bolters and waveoffs.

    • @jacksonbrown6199
      @jacksonbrown6199 Год назад

      @ChadGatling you basically put them on a long downwind and sequence them into the stack when you can. Procedures allow for 30-second separation when necessary although we rarely did that. Usually it's just back of the line for the bolters.

    • @ChadGatling
      @ChadGatling Год назад

      @@jacksonbrown6199 ahh interesting. So how many flights can be on the same stack level? For either case?

    • @jacksonbrown6199
      @jacksonbrown6199 Год назад

      @ChadGatling in theory you can keep it going forever, depending on airspace constraints. Carrier ops launch aircraft in mission packages all at once so you're dealing with a number of aircraft returning all at once (I'm actually not sure how specific I'm able to get about this, but it's a typical number of aircraft launched at a set time interval).
      With that, we marshal the entire mission stack and bring them in one after the other. The goal is to get them on deck as fast as possible, you don't want to keep the boat going straight for too long (although they like to turn anyways... which is annoying).

    2 minute 180° turn=120 seconds for 180° of turn, so 60 sec for 90°, 30 sec for 45°, 10 sec for 15°, 1 sec=1.5°, 1.5°/sec, 3°/2 sec. Gauge with constant monitoring. There's perhaps a more accurate angle calculation that someone could input with bank angle at a given airspeed, like a pilot, but that will work for me.
    Thanks, CAP! I always look for your videos to help learn these systems and procedures.

    The reason the hold is 1NM further away each 1000' is to guarantee that everyone fly the same glide path. But for it to work you have to wait to your distance fix before commencing the descent, otherwise you will descent through the holding area of the guys underneath you!

    In aviation when doing instrument approaches turns are standard Rate 1 turns at 3 deg per second... to turn 180 deg in 120 seconds its 1.5 deg per second (half normal rate 1 turn).

  • @zsifk3212
    @zsifk3212 4 года назад +7

    Is the Marshall Stack not just flown at a Standard Rate-1 Turn as you would do in a normal civilian holding pattern? If that is the case, the TAS (in knots) divided by 10 plus 7 should give you the bank angle. Thus at 250 we are looking at 32 degrees. That will given a 360 degree turn in 2 minutes. Also, does the HUD not have a Turn Rate Indicator (three little blocks next to each other)?

  • @piston_77
    @piston_77 4 года назад +3

    Super cap, if I may correct something, the pattern you made was wrong. You have to make a standard rate turn (3 degrees per second) to the left which takes 1 minute to make 180°, you don't stop and fly one minute 90° off. So you just turn in a standard rate for one minute, then fly two minutes, then make another standard turn for one minute and then fly another two minutes to the fix point and start over. Hope it helps. Certified IFR pilot here :)

    Surely the upwind leg should be on the radial - not the downwind leg? (as per the diagram "Theory" section)

    • @CakePrincessCelestia
      @CakePrincessCelestia 4 года назад +1

      Not just that, it should even be another 30° off, as shown here:
      ruclips.net/video/DvlMHnLjbDQ/видео.html
      So if the BRC is 000, you set up your marshal stack at 210 and when commencing, you'd fly that arc to intercept radial 350 to be right on the localizer at 10. I wonder why the manual doesn't even have this in at all though.

    CAP, if you look at the Standby attitude reference indicator (SARI) the is a ball between to lines and just below that you see a white and black dashed line, then below that is a white pointer. If you make a turn and put the white pointer at the bottom on the black dash to the left/right will get you a 2 min turn.

    I've set up a mission with the F18c and supercarrier,
    adding the 'advanced waypoint - commands' for the carrier
    to set the ILS to ch 11, and the TACAN to ch 71.
    The weather is set to "clear" (actually I have selected the 'none' / bare sky)
    I set the mission to run at time 23:00 which is triggering a "recovery III"
    I start the mission, and set the tacan and ICLS channels in the jet.
    I do the radio "inbound" ,,, get vectored to the stack
    ..... hold for the appropriate time, exit and approach
    the carrier at 1200 agl.
    I've "boxed" the TCN and ILS settings in the HSI.
    I'm within 10nm and have caled "see you at 10"
    My hud is NOT displaying the ICLS symbology.
    It IS displaying the TACAN symbology
    I *did* hear the "bullseye" call during one run, but I can't remember
    if I was seeing the ICLS symbology
    What am I missing ?

    daytime / clear weather ?
