This was super helpful. My triangle gets smaller on the catch as my top arm is too bent.
Theres always a balance. Straight is bad. Too bent is bad. There's a happy middle in there. Everyone is different with arm length proportional to their torso length too.

hey, I've found a few of your videos for Va'a technique and they have given me some useful insight. Im a disabled paddler from the UK, we only paddle and steer on one side which is fine for 200m but im now venturing into long distance, 12k +. i need to learn how to turn a Va'a now, do you have any videos coming up on this skill?
Hey there! I have been thinking to add a V1 101 series on the website as an "intro to Va'a" on the steering strokes. It turns quickly to about 45 degrees off center but the drag factor from the length slows it down tremendously going to 90 or making a 180 turn is a nightmare. There's a few movements you can incorporate to steer it quickly in that 45 degree zone but holding a straight line means switching really quickly... the ama being rigged one way or another will influence steering a bit too.
@@K2NOPS thank you for the reply, some of my potential races this year are going to be on a lake or river with 1 bouy 180 degree turns, ive had a few plays at turning recently and these va'a's really don't like to do anything other the straight lines. short jay and long jay strokes just don't seem to get the tail round fast enough and i end up paddling backward on the ama side half way through a turn to try and claw the nose round
