विश्वामित्र वैदिक काल के विख्यात ऋषि (योगी) थे। ऋषि विश्वामित्र बड़े ही प्रतापी और तेजस्वी महापुरुष थे। ऋषि धर्म ग्रहण करने के पूर्व वे बड़े पराक्रमी और प्रजावत्सल नरेश कौशिक थे !
विश्वामित्र जी की जन्म कथा :-
इस कथा के अनुसार, विश्वामित्र पहले एक धर्मात्मा राजा अर्थात क्षत्रिय थे जिन्होंने तपस्या के द्वारा ब्राह्मणत्व प्राप्त किया। उनके परदादा कुश प्रजापति के पुत्र थे। कुश के पुत्र कुशनाभ और कुशनाभ के पुत्र गाधि नाम से विख्यात हुए। विश्वामित्र इन्हीं गाधि की संतान थे।

Vishwamitra is derived from the word Vishwa and Mitra which means friendship or love with everyone. One day King Vishwamitra went to the ashram of Vashistha Rishi with his army. Vishwamitra saluted him and sat there.Vashistha paid due respect to Vishwamitra ji and requested him to stay in the ashram for a few days and receive hospitality. Considering that there is a huge army with me and Vashistha will suffer in my hospitality,||Vishwamitra ||
