As someone who was introduced to TTRPGs through Pathfinder 1e, being where I started GMing and being a game I played for the better part of a decade, I can say this: Great video. You really capture the best parts of Pathfinder 1E. My only pedantic requirement is: 5 points to raise a stat from 10 to 14. 5, not 6. Gods that was bothering me, but I did learn something about the system I didn't know, so I can admit I have egg on my face also.
Also happy to hear that Sylvia's starting a game up for you again, and I hope you're building towards Sword and Pistol (the two-weapon fighting feat) and leaning into the Whip Mastery feats. That'll rule school.
If I have any contentions, its that a lot of this is focused on the value to players... which I've always noted to my group is the focus of both 3.xE and Pathfinder 1e. For GMs, those same advantages can be disadvantageous as, as I will never stop noting, when you build a lot of creatures, modify creatures, or add class levels, remembering the stacks of moving parts can be a bit overwhelming.
As for my favorite system, Pathfinder 2E scratched an itch I didn't know I had before the Pathfinder Playtest back in 2018. Even in the jenky playtest, I knew I had finally found a system that I, both as a GM and Player, could instantly get into and would enjoy... and that's been overwhelmingly true.
I know this comment is stupidly long, but I'd like to one day discuss/debate aspects of PF1 with you, if only because I like discussing changes that were made in Starfinder and PF2 from PF1 and why they work.
Thanks for your time, Boss Muse Foxy, and keep on keeping on!

Pathfinder 1 is my game, after 30+ years playing RPGs. It is so versatile for playing and GMing, especially making adventures and world-building. It’s appears to be very complex, but we need to remember, the game belongs to the players and GM and they can include, alter, or completely leave out any races, classes, treasures, monsters, or any other rules or parts of the game you wish.

I'm new to TTRPGs, been playing for a few months at the time of this comment. A friend of mine invited me to their pathfinder group because they had been looking for another player and I had mentioned that I had always wanted to get into TTRPG. We play gestalt and I've made a few characters at this point, mostly because I've been trying to find my play style. One thing that I am certain of is that one of my classes will ALWAYS be a bard. I fell in love with them right away, mostly because I enjoy the roleplay aspect more than the combat and they match my personality. Not to mention the bardic knowledge and jack of all trades (which our GM has a homebrew rule that at 10th level all skills are considered class skills instead of at 16th). I've also become quite fond of the 3rd party Kijin race, which we tweeted a little. Sorry the comment was so long but I felt compelled to share my love of Pathfinder first edition and the bard class. Also love the videos!

I want to say that I'm a person who started in 5e, and I as I've played other systems, have ended up DESPISING it. Between Savage Worlds, Conan 2d20, Warhammer Fantasy, BESM, and here recently PF1E as some of my most enjoyed systems I have got to question why 5e is so beloved. There is so much that other systems do better than it in my opinion. And PF1E does SO much better than it in a d20 system that I'm a bit in love.
Also in my first ever PF campaign I am in last night my helpful halfling investigator perished, which is quite sad. We're only lv 3 and due to a trap from earlier in the outing he'd lost 6 points of con he was down to 6 con from his original 12. A fight broke out with some inquisitors, and one of them rolled first in initiative and rolled a nat 19 on their attack roll dealing 10 points of damage to him when he was at 3 health remaining, Which brought him to -7 in one hit killing him. Bear in mind we're like halfway through this dungeon, the martials can't hit a bloody thing, and we are pretty much out of spell slots already. (this was due mostly from to an ambush on a boat earlier with some gatormen where as initiative was rolled a reflex save was called and our barbarian was the only person who failed it knocking her prone. Due to this the gatormen all piled on her, and knocked her unconscious as well as my halfling the others had to expend nearly every slot they had to scare them off)

Don't know why I just now am looking at Pathfinder 1e and 2e, but the fact that so much of Paizo's updates basically helped make D&D 4e. Stuff like the five foot step was turned into shift, the pruned skill list putting stealth instead of hide and move silent made their way to 4th. I really should have made my group give 1e a play before we jumped to 4e. Pathfinder 1e sounded great, Pathfinder 2e is looking great as well. 5e is just too simplified for my group.

    LONG RANT WARNING!!!
First off, this is just my opinion, take it with a grain of salt.===
I LOVE Pathfinder. Been playing for years. Started out with some 2nd edition, moved ot 3.5, went to P1 and haven't really switched. Not that I have anything against 5e, but it doesn't seem like it has as much crunch to me for character creation. I do like some things in the game system though....
In 5e = Warlock. I think it is a cool class. Too bad it wasn't a class in P1 (I know about the archetype for vigilante, I think a warlock class should have been created instead of being an archetype of a vigilante).
Cantrip damage advances past 1d3 damage. Always had a concern with running out of attack spells as a pure spell caster, one reason I rarely ever played one (okay, I played a sorcerer one campaign, that was all)
And I think short rests might be good for P1 to give back some spells/abilities so that a party can keep going.
In 4e, minions was a good tool for combat. Also, the "Bloody" status.
Now, for pathfinder 1e. There are SO many options in it. There are over 20 classes and each of them has, at minimum, 10 archetypes and you can multiclass. You can theory craft for hours and hours and still never run out of options. And the classes have options and feats and all of this crunch. so much to do.
I do agree with you that being able to stack bonuses instead of just having advantage/disadvantage is also great. You can aid another, roll a 10 on a skill check/attack roll and add a +2 to someone elses check. TEAMWORK!
And sure, I agree, there is a lot ot keep tract of and lots of rules, but it does work once you understand them.
I've played a few different point buys in pathfinder. 15, 20, 25, 35 (yes, 35). I've also rolled, 4d6 reroll 1, keep 3. I've also rolled 4d6 reroll 1 & 2 until they get 3 or higher, keep 3 best and I've had flat stats, some really high, with a limit of nothing higher than 18 after racials and nothing below 10 after racial (18, 16, 15, 14, 12, 10 were the stats before racial bonuses)
Oh, and you can get magic stuff in P1. So you can open a treasure chest and get some cool stuff that the party can use.
Also, getting skill points is awesome. I agree with you on being able to put skill points into anything you want.
This is all my opinion, though. This information was just my two coppers. Thank you for the video.

The lack of options and feeling like you have to optimize or have an unviable character in 5E is why my initial impression of it was pretty awful. I tried to make a strength-focused monk, and he just died in the second or third game because I lacked the AC that a Dex monk would have, whereas in Pathfinder, you can make up for that with a high Con, especially in the late game. But in 5E, AC matters a lot more and HP matters a lot less; you are expected to drop like once a fight if you're a frontliner due to the way 0 HP and healing spells work in the game. So after my monk died, I just went with a sorcerer because they're minmaxy as hell and can break everything, and I gave him Spell Sniper so I'd never die. Was a spite character.
But in Pathfinder, I've made the goofiest damn builds, and as long as one ability score is 16 or above, they can WORK, even if they take some time to get rolling sometimes. Pathfinder just has a lot more freedom, and though I don't hate 5E anymore (I think there are a number of really good things about it, like the fact that you can't get your skills to the point where there's no point rolling at later levels), Pathfinder's just much more my style. It's a little harder to get into, especially if you use the SRD with hundreds and hundreds of overwhelming options, but it fits my own personal interests in a game system much better than 5E.
All that said, I don't think that it's the crunchiness and fiddliness that interests me specifically. I think it's the fact that it knows what it wants to be and COMMITS to it, because my absolute favorite tabletop system, Ironclaw, basically goes the opposite direction and commits to being wibbly-wobbly and up to interpretation on almost every roll, but it's built for that, unlike 5E, which says it wants to be that way (that's what Advantage is presumably for), but is built upon the foundation of a decades-old war game and could never quite break free, so it winds up in this weird, awkward middle ground between crunchy and loose and ultimately winds up requiring rules clarifications on the writers' Twitter accounts.
P.S. Nice Hbomberguy reference in the title. :)

I totally agree with all of this. Mostly I agree with the options angle. Customization in P1e is very detailed and each choice feels more like a slight detour rather than a major re-rout. Archetypes are great because you can even take more than one as long as replaced abilities don't overlap. I've even taken the archetypes one step further and allowed players to take ones who's abilities overlap [on no more than one ability] by choosing which replacement to take (as long as this didn't cause issues with prerequisites and lore/backstory.) This offered them more potential options, which they loved!
I also want to add that the system for building custom magic items from scratch is a pure delight! Also, the Advanced Guide to Races allows you to build your own races from scratch and even gives point values to all existing races. This is where I made my homebrew City Kobold race which is just the base kobold slightly buffed to be on par with the core races. (Core races range from 8-11 RP and kobolds are a mere 5 RP, so I buffed them up to 8 RP.) I also included some lore as to why they have the buffs they have. (That is, better nutrition, resources, and cultural enrichment.)
The only house rule/modification I implemented long term was that prepared spells were not linked to specific slots. It's essentially what 5e ended up doing with prepared spells being the spells you can essentially "spontaneous cast" for the day. My group always hated Vancian casting (each spell slot pre-assigned to a specific spell when prepared) so we just took it out. It seemed to work really well without imbalancing anything.
Yeah, all in all P1e is my favourite d20 system too!

I've been using Pathfinder since it came out, having cut my teeth on 2.5 and 3.5 at 10. My mother passed two years ago nearly and I started on a lark to generate an old wip campaign idea into a flawed masterpiece. So to get past the first anniversary of her passing I started crafting an in-depth horror comedy set on a tight schedule of 27 in game days. It has several custom d% event tables to ensure I can't even plan entirely how the story will end up going. Each player's class is at least part witch, with retooled features for certain classes such as trading out familiars for spontaneous casting if the player wants; an enhanced coven hex that allows transfers of spell slots (1-3 only) and HP through touch with other coven members. Each character, NPCs included, are built with a few things in mind: theme, eye patch & a limp qualities, two defining traits, two flaws, one item they collect or love above others, a tragic backstory note and two humorous scenes or points of note at least. Weaving them together is an area in ruins, formerly home to numerous inns, resorts and entertainment venues that have all fallen to disrepair. I created 100 Bad Inns which clog the area to better hit home with the true BBEG of the campaign: The Rest Restrictions Table. The more the party engages in a proper full rest (or enough shorter ones to count) the amount is noted and added as a bonus to an in game daily roll which imposes small blanket penalties up to the temporary annulment of a school of magic, etc. It ties together a reworked age and encumbrance ruleset to ensure while they get a chance to be useful without requiring a price check each time you want to temporarily age a foe, etc. Every character, player and npc alike, is jacked up to phenomenal proportions that are superhero adjacent. Overall between the main themes of memory (represented by limited note taking ability), dream (adding in some very surreal, esoteric and up to interpretation sequences) and loss (made obvious by some of the above) all link together with some set events and interactions at the handful of hub and choke points to help direct the coven with each of their clashing individual (secret) goals set by which of the possible 18 starting characters they choose. As they become depleted and possibly they lose their character they'll take over one of the missing members of the coven suddenly instead of making a new character.
Effectively I'm going to have my friends help me through the trauma process a year later than needed but it's going to be compelling to explore either way. Base creature encounters have several random scenery objects with odds of being present to help ensure even repeated encounters through an area will be varied but exploitable as well with planning and memory.
Anywho, just needed to put this somewhere I guess but hope it inspires more people on the off chance.

I've played it for about 2 years now (on and off), its an extremely mild system overall and the advantage/disadvantage part of it really doesn't help. But man is there a lot they could have used as a reference and they blew off so much potential. Like for instance, its a 9th level barbarian feature to add an extra die on a crit with nothing else gained at that level. For rangers, their 20th level ability is to add Wis mod to attack or damage rolls once per turn, and they only get 2 attacks (unless they get a bonus action attack from a feat or through multiclassing, though one subclass gets an extra attack on the first turn of combat).

Time for my own little ramble to accompany this:
I am liking Pathfinder 1E already: I have been collecting loads of books, though most of them are second edition, and I absolutely love the variety in what I find. Monsters, gear, spells... I love variety so much. I love systems in video games that let you do stylish characters that just have substance anyway: I am very much a form over function person when it comes to games and honestly in many aspects of my life, but form and function don't have to be separate things.
It honestly saddens me when I see metas and stuff like that where people just use the strongest things over and over and leave the variety behind in favor of big damage numbers. It saddens me even more when systems encourage this sort of thing, especially with magic. I like style that has substance: not just pure substance with no style. There's nothing wrong with minmaxing and powergaming, but I don't like either of them and find them to be just limiting and uncreative. No art, no style... Just big numbers. I don't even like characters being refered to as just builds: I want my players to make characters, not just max statistic manifestations and calling them builds removes the character aspect for me.
I think I may end up using the system of Pathfinder as a base for my own homebrew systems, to work with increasing variety in every way imaginable. It may be variety for variety's sake sometimes, but it's all the better for me. Just more options.
So... Yeah. Had to let my own feelings out. I think the first game I run when I do finally get around to it may be a Pathfinder one: Though I do want to get into translating some monsters from Kobold Press' monster books into pathfinder's systems.

I ran a lot of 3rd-edition and a little Pathfinder. Aside from certain small differences, I found them to run exactly the same. Those floating modifiers were always annoying and could be difficult to notate correctly, especially for one of my players. He claims to fail to understand the character sheet in ANY edition of D&D. I dislike the fact is whenever there's a good idea, both games do their damnedest to complicate matters for no apparent reason.
Figuring skill ranks in Pathfinder has the same results as 3e. But the method is simpler. It's one of the few places where it shines. But too many Skills in both, Herr Mozart.
3e/Pathfinder (and 4e) demand system mastery so you can plan ahead. It's easy to make a bad character in 3e/Pf just by taking the wrong Feat. That's certainly not my jam.
But my biggest problem with 3e/Pathfinder 1e (and 4e), is I couldn't house rule easily. And that's where both 5e and AD&D work better for me. I like house rules. I don't have a lot but none have any unexpected side effects.
I played a Battle Master Fighter for a time. It was a ton of fun and definitely not boring. I've always found combat in 5e to run much faster than 3e/Pathfinder.
No power creep in Pathfinder? It's certainly not what I've heard and it'd be the first long-lived RPG that didn't suffer the problem.
As for your problem with Advantage/Disadvantage, Cody over at Taking20 provided a nice solution. Any time you have Advantage, roll a d6 instead of the second d20, adding the results. If you have Disadvantage, roll the d6 and subtract. If you have Advantage twice, that's +2d6. In those rare instances of Advantage twice and Disadvantage once or vice versa, you still have a d6.
Should I ever want to return to a very crunchy game, I'll give "The Dark Eye" (Das Schwarze Auge) a shot. 3e/Pathfinder are editions I couldn't go back to.
All that said, D&D is like Dr Who. Whichever Doctor you started with will likely be your favourite. (For me, that's Patrick Troughton.)

This is pretty much my take as well. The reason 3e/Pathfinder never took off like 5e did was it's just too hard to get a game rolling for people new to the system. Making a character is intimidating, and as the game goes on there are a lot of trap options that a player can take that sound cool, but will cripple your character.

Another option for Attributes is Standard Array. In our case, we use 20, 18,16,16,14. If you want to put the 20 in your good state, race wise, great. If you want to use it to balance out your penalty, great. But this also means that casters are a bit less squishy.

Personally I really like 5e but I am still really interested in pathfinder.
The issue though is the bar to entry. The rules may be free online but having a tough digesting it as there's no proper guides, tips, videos, step by step, breakdowns etc out there, just massive walls of text with different points of reference. Everyone I know who's played pathfinder 1e was either paying since 3.5 or was taught by veterans. So while I like 5e and am willing to explore other games, the way pathfinder 1e is designed makes it really tough for newcomers to get in and its much easier homebrewing new elements to spice things up than it is to learn a new system.
I did at least find pathfinder 2e much easier to get into, while I prefer certain elements of 5e I do really like how 2e classes & combat is very balanced, and tactical.

    • @Flotsome
      @Flotsome 2 года назад

      @@FoxyBard I'll check it out.
I think it's a lot less stressful to learn by seeing it in practice, for me it's like learning a video game by reading the manual but I want to see it in action to know how it handles, I'm also weirdo like that.
I learned to play my first ttrpg 5e after watching Critical Role and saw how the game functions, I more recently learned how to play pf2e after watching Nonat1s do mechanical breakdowns and The Rules Lawyer doing step by step combat simulations.
I also recently discovered Matt Colville did a 4e campaign that I'm planning to check out because a number of issues I've had with 5e are apparently not an issue in 4e but I've avoided it because I don't want to get more than I bargained for and the multiple player rule books are intimidating. So now that he's done this I can see it in action and decide for myself.

*When you're optimizing a character* is my biggest problem with PF1. I feel like no matter how I build my character, I'm doing it wrong, and all of the most interesting options are actually secretly super bad, and the number bloat is insane. The first time I encountered an enemy with, no joke, +30 to hit, I threw my hands up. Am I meant to be able to have an AC that that will sometimes miss? Or is it just supposed to automatically hit with it's first attack every time it attacks and doesn't roll a 1???
Having to comb through infinite feats, some of which are objectively worse than others, through traits, some of which are way better than feats, through racial traits, class traits, alternate class options, etc is not for me. I prefer the simpler system of 5e than the option pile that is pf1

    • @Demonskunk
      @Demonskunk 8 месяцев назад

The reason people call it mathfinder is because the game becomes more about figuring out how to increase your numbers than anything else.
My favorite pf character ever is a Rakshasa Arcanist who I managed to get a +30 to Bluff at level 5 (it's something like +46 at level 13 now) which was a load of fun because I love social stuff, but then I had other party members who were throwing out attacks dealing over a hundred damage minimum with save DCs so high that unless you're immune, you're not making the save. Made me feel proper useless with my garbage little spells.
It's something a lot of folks can have a lot of fun with, but I don't have the time or brain to deal with it, and it ends up making me feel bad.

I haven't gotten into PF1. There's a lot of books and I didn't know if I want to get into that. Since PF2e is rather new, it was fun following all the new releases. Some people say it's more streamlined than 1e, and even though I can't compare the editions myself, I think it's pretty streamlined. It's crunchier than 5e but I really like the options. Also I like how Crits work (10 over or under the AC or DC) so you can work for your Crits which is really cool.

Pf1e is a great system but too many players rely on the game systems to make their characters interesting rather than building a back story and infusing them with personality through role playing. You're character is more than the numbers on the page. It's too easy in Pf1e to say I have a skill for that instead of role playing. Granted not everyone who plays a rules heavy system neglects role playing but the system itself does not promote it. In fact it turns a lot of role play into a dice roll.

Do you know about D&D 3.5? It's 100% compatible to Pathfinder as are any of the D20 system books (Though it takes a little adjusting in some cases). But I wholly agree with you. I started playing D&D when 3.0 released and I have played a whole other host of TTRPGS since then. When I first played D&D 5e I felt like someone cut mu limbs off. While creating a character I was VASTLY limited character build options. No system is better than the 3.5 system (thats the system that Pathfinder, D20, and D&D 3.5 uses fyi). However I will say that 5.0 is a good system thats simple enough to introduce new players with 0 ttrpg/rpg experiance can get into. But after they learn they should graduate to Pathfinder or D&D 3.5 for a better experiance.
