I could not agree more. It’s a travesty when I watch “top AI performances of all time” clips on RUclips and this is not #1. There’s only been like 4 performances that Simon gave highest praise. Off the top of my head... 1. This one 2. Ruben “kiss and say goodbye” 3. Carrie Underwood “Alone” 4. Adam Lambert “tracks of my tears” or “mad world”?
I remember watching this live and I couldn't wait to hear what Simon would say. He didn't disappoint. Paula & Randy were too nice to say what we all were thinking but Simon said it. We didn't just watch the best performance of the night but possibly the best one in the history of the show to that point.
I am a classically trained musician(not a singer, I work with singers) who has known and worked with some of the best voices in the country.and Lakesha is so far one of the only 2 female singers(the other one being Haley from season 10) that I consider the "real deal" .Lakesha's voice is simply God's precious gift. and it's unfortunate she didn't get to be as big as she truly deserves to be. She's just too good for most major labels.
It's pretty astonishing to see that caliber performance on a talent show, let alone one of the first episodes of the show. She would have killed it if she had come up during the Motown days!
Simon said at the end, "Sorry, that was in a different league.".And he was right! So many people want to bust Simon's chops but seriously, the man has been in the recording industry for over 20 years. I think he knows what he's talking about.
Having been an Idol fans for years,I can say that this was by far the BEST performance in Idol history!! She is incredible and this song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it! I LLLLLOOVVEE IT!
This was one of my favorite of Lakisha's performances that season! She must have made Jennifer Hudson really proud. Either girl should play Maybelle in NBC's upcoming Hairspray Live this December.
Jessica and Lakisha both did an amazing job to this song, but I gotta be real and say, Lakisha gave more OH SHIT to this some, and It had more energy and spunk
I've been watching the competition since day one and I don't remember a time when one of the background singers actually applauded a contestant's performance until this one. (2:54 top left side of the screen)
This is the best ever performance of this song for me, I want to hear it sung with passion and power and real meaning and LaKisha did that, it gave me goose bumps and I'll never stop watching this version.
i love lakisha! i hope she goes far, because you can really tell that she needs this opportunity for herseld and her daughter, and she's a great person and a spontaneous singer.
This is by far the strongest performance of this song, to date. Some may say Jessica sang it better, but it depends on your preference. If you're into smoothness and subtlety, then Jessica's version would fit your style. But for me who believes this song should be sung with power, this is the best. (they're both the best)
Nah 4th place was right for her. She was really good, but she was inconsistent. She peaked early imo as I still think this was her best performance. Which is a slight problem since this was her first one. Melinda, Jordin, and Blake were the right final three.
@@manuelorozco7760 I absolutely did not like Jordin as a performer. I liked her personality, but didn't care anything for her singing. I always thought she was meant to be an actress. However, Lakeisha who was older should have commanded more with the instruction she was given. Jordin at least was a good study...still didn't care for her.
Big big voice! Some minor control issues and that's what separated her from Melinda & Jordan in the end... IMO of course..... That being said- in the TOP 3 vocal performances that season: Wow, as I remembered it: THE BEST, MOST ASTOUNDING FEMALE bunch EVER ASSEMBLED: Lakisha, Melinda, Jordin, Sabrina Sloan & Stephanie Edwards!!! Wow! At ones point, I thought ANY ONE OF EM' coulda won!!!
If Lakisha had of been seen before Jennifer Hudson, I believe roles would have been reversed! This girl has one of the riches voices I've ever heard! She's always had the same type voice as Whitney Houston!!
The only bad thing about having incredible performances so early in the competition is that later on you have to top that. That was her problem. She couldn't live up to this performance. That's why she didn't win. Even though this was really good I prefer Jessica's.
melinda and lakisha rocked this season. how neither of them won is beyond me. i would have died to see a finale with the two best singers blowing our minds.
I believe of the performers who didn't win on this show, This performance has the most hits on RUclips! It was better than Jennifer's in the movie in my opinion!! And Jennifer was able to redo it until it was perfect, not allowed on the Idol!
+Joseph Sherby I have to agree, Lakisha's version compares very favorably to Holliday's - I can actually imagine Lakisha in the play itself when I'm watching her, and I think that's the difference between her and nearly everyone else I've seen perform the song. There may be technically better versions out there - the song is chopped up a bit oddly here - but Lakisha brings the rage and fire and determination of a scorned woman who is not having it.
+faisal aceh I don't know but I just found out almost three years ago she was on a singing game show called And the Winner is on ABC that was hosted by Nick Lachey.
+faisal aceh Janelle B said in this thread a day ago in reply Crimson Tide that she just saw Lakisha perform at a Broadway Tribute with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
+Manuel Orozco Link? I finally found her twitter feed and the Vancouver Symphony tweeted to announce her appearance so it is possible to "follow" her there. (Anyone else remember the days before social media?)
She was never able to truly live up to this performance. That's why she didn't win. Everyone kept comparing every performance to this performance. Where as Jordin and Melinda, and others kept getting better each week.
this performance never gets old… one of the best in the history of the show.. pure power!!!
I could not agree more. It’s a travesty when I watch “top AI performances of all time” clips on RUclips and this is not #1.
There’s only been like 4 performances that Simon gave highest praise. Off the top of my head...

4. Adam Lambert “tracks of my tears” or “mad world”?
eswolf agreed. Plus, she’s gorgeous.
Its iconic
TRUTH! Damn shame we don’t see her anymore. She’s fn amazing
Yes! I agree 100%! It’s my absolute favorite performance of this song.
Ive watched American Idol every single season-this is the one performance I have always remembered. One of the best ever on American Idol.
I've never forgotten this performance!! NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!
Me either
Same same
17 years later and this is still hands down the best American Idol performance ever recorded. So great.
It must be because all these years later I thought to watch this again late night before I go to sleep.
I totally agree. Always go back to watch it from time to time.
This was her moment on TV that will never be matched for her. Cherish it.
Burst into tears the moment I watched it. Years later, still do. Passion and heart!!!!
Learned from church lol. They got the passion
This performance is still my fav. Will never forget Lakisha Jones. Xxxx
Come back one every year just to hear this rendition, simply the best. Only candidates performance I miss
She’s still my favorite and it’s 2022
I remember watching this live and I couldn't wait to hear what Simon would say. He didn't disappoint. Paula & Randy were too nice to say what we all were thinking but Simon said it. Still watching in 2017! Unforgettable
One of the FINEST performances on this show.
Best Idol performance ever!
It's pretty astonishing to see that caliber performance on a talent show, let alone one of the first episodes of the show. She would have killed it if she had come up during the Motown days!

Lakisha is underrated! she needs to come back with a new album
Jes
One of the very best voices to ever be on AI! For sure. Too bad that no one picked her up. They are all idiots for not signing this woman.
when they actually picked great singers. i still love hearing her version
2020 I’m still watching this one of my favorite performances ever on AI
She truly has one of the most beautiful singing voices I've EVER heard, I think. And, she knocks it out of the park as a performer, too.
goosebumps... i watch this 4 a couple of times and this is what i FELT again and again.
I get chills everytime I watch this. Great voice!
One of the only covers of this song that really captures Effie and still making the song about something totally different...
Her last note was mind-blowing xD!
everytime i watch this i get the goose bumps;.. I would pay to see lakisha jones sing. dont care where either.. love her
Unbelievable; I could watch it 1000 times
Lakisha is one of the best talents American Idol has discovered..Thank God for her..
Lavish throws down. This girl can sing!!!!!!!!!!!!!! love her!
Having been an Idol fans for years,I can say that this was by far the BEST performance in Idol history!! She is incredible and this song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it! I LLLLLOOVVEE IT!
I remember watching this performance and it was outstanding!
and from Nottingham England LaKisha your voice
the power just beautiful
and we do love you!
Very powerful!! Great personality,beautiful personality...what a big,powerful voice. 😊😙😉
In every season there is always one performance that stands above the rest, and this was the one.
This was one of my favorite of Lakisha's performances that season! She must have made Jennifer Hudson really proud. Either girl should play Maybelle in NBC's upcoming Hairspray Live this December.
I agree, Manuel.
Lisa Toner Thanks and Jennifer Hudson is playing Maybelle
I am constantly hoping Lakisha is doing well in her life. She lifted me up at a time I truly needed it. Music is so amazing.
Yeeeeeessss that's right. "They're gonna love me."....and they did LaKisha :). #BOMB singer. Such a strong powerhouse.
AWESOME SINGER & BEAUTIFUL LADY.
Jessica and Lakisha both did an amazing job to this song, but I gotta be real and say, Lakisha gave more OH SHIT to this some, and It had more energy and spunk
Jessica gave a far better vocal and harder arrangement.
Your right
Impossible not to adore you LaKisha... you are absolutely brilliant!
I've been watching the competition since day one and I don't remember a time when one of the background singers actually applauded a contestant's performance until this one. (2:54 top left side of the screen)
This is the best ever performance of this song for me, I want to hear it sung with passion and power and real meaning and LaKisha did that, it gave me goose bumps and I'll never stop watching this version.
her voice is great T_T gotta appreciate strong voices like hers
2023 and I'm still watching this. I love her voice!!!
She is amazing!!! Simply the best!!!
That was one of the baddest performances in Idol history. Hands down! Wow!
SHE KILLED IT
+Kimberly Hamilton She sure did. Ironic thing I saw this performance before seeing the Dreamgirls movie with Jennifer Hudson.
i love lakisha! i hope she goes far, because you can really tell that she needs this opportunity for herseld and her daughter, and she's a great person and a spontaneous singer.
Still the best version of this song I’ve heard.
are you deaf?
she sings with so much passion. with her whole soul. truly a beautiful artist.
Melinda Doolittle is by far my favorite female idol contestant, but this was unfortunately Lakisha's peak performance.
After all these years ...she should have WON this competition, she was the BEST
This is by far the strongest performance of this song, to date. Some may say Jessica sang it better, but it depends on your preference. If you're into smoothness and subtlety, then Jessica's version would fit your style. But for me who believes this song should be sung with power, this is the best.
(they're both the best)
I remember watching this live on TV and years later I looked this up I had to watch it again what a great performance she did.
By Far, the best performance ever,on American Idol!!
Bruce Baldwin Yes. I always come back to watch this video because it's so memorable…just an amazing performance!!!
Jessica Sanchez did it better and with more control.
You guys should Check out Candice Glover, I who have nothing performance.
James Biggins stfu
Oh please.
One of the best Idol Moments and Performences !!
Outstanding!
2022, still beautiful…outstanding!
Still watching in 2019?
2020
2021
I keep listening her over and over again and never get tired. She's so brilliant! I do love her 2.
No one out sings Lakisha! That's why she does Hudson and Houston songs as good as the originals! This lady was cheated that year!
+Bruce Baldwin I did like some of the other contestants and was rooting for Jordan all the way. However, LaKisha was a standout.
Nah 4th place was right for her. She was really good, but she was inconsistent. She peaked early imo as I still think this was her best performance. Which is a slight problem since this was her first one. Melinda, Jordin, and Blake were the right final three.

@@creating1_c1999 To each their own
I've always loved how near the end, the others were up on the balcony just watching, while Jordin Sparks' was rockin' out with her.
Wow! At ones point, I thought ANY ONE OF EM' coulda won!!!
i love lakisha .. i would pay tosee her in concert
She should've won this
felinefanatic agree!
Oh LaKisha, we HAVE to love you! I still get chills every time I watch this! LaKisha's a star!
If Lakisha had of been seen before Jennifer Hudson, I believe roles would have been reversed! This girl has one of the riches voices I've ever heard! She's always had the same type voice as Whitney Houston!!
Bruce Baldwin yes agreed! She should of been on season 2 or 3!!
Bruce Baldwin I'm lucky though u know why because she my music teacher me lucky eh
2024 and I still love this performance!
The only bad thing about having incredible performances so early in the competition is that later on you have to top that. That was her problem. She couldn't live up to this performance. That's why she didn't win. Even though this was really good I prefer Jessica's.
You are right on both counts! Exactly what i thought. She peaked early and did not make this pinnacle again...
A non-winner with a million hits! No one who knows this performance will ever forget it! Amazing voice!!
She peaked too early in the competition. She couldn't out-do this performance. But it's one of idols best of all time.
Love this girl!!!! So Soulful!! Awesome!! Pure dynamite! I have watched this video 100 times and simply can't stop watching...
how is she not famous
She is she teaches us
melinda and lakisha rocked this season. how neither of them won is beyond me. i would have died to see a finale with the two best singers blowing our minds.
........... wow
2018 and she’s still the best ! Love u Lakisha!
I believe of the performers who didn't win on this show, This performance has the most hits on RUclips! It was better than Jennifer's in the movie in my opinion!! And Jennifer was able to redo it until it was perfect, not allowed on the Idol!
I like it better than Hudson's too. One of the best singing voices I think I've ever heard. Beautiful voice.
all these however many years later, this still gives me chills.
Although she didn't top Jennifer Holliday, she beat Hudson by a ton. The growling made the song. Love LaKisha's version of this song.
+Joseph Sherby same she sang it better than hudson
Holliday sounds like she's taking a dump
VERy powerful. she is born with an amazing voice
Where is she now?
+faisal aceh I don't know but I just found out almost three years ago she was on a singing game show called And the Winner is on ABC that was hosted by Nick Lachey.
+faisal aceh Janelle B said in this thread a day ago in reply Crimson Tide that she just saw Lakisha perform at a Broadway Tribute with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
Janice Janostak I found a photo on Instagram
+Manuel Orozco Link?

Janice Janostak Sorry i don't have it
I WISH SHE SANG MORE OF THIS. she's amazing 😭😭😭
Lakisha's the closest singer to Whitney, voice wise! Always amazing! 68 People need hearing aids!

She should have won the contest! Blew me away.🌹🌹🌹
She was never able to truly live up to this performance. That's why she didn't win. Everyone kept comparing every performance to this performance. Where as Jordin and Melinda, and others kept getting better each week.
Love love love that performance. Saw it when it was on. One of her best. I remember thinking: a great song and an amazing performance to end the show.
