Keanu Reeves?!? Now HE is one of the most overrated actors ever! Totally unlistenable and unnatural voice. All except "Bill & Ted's", which I loved. Even in movies I DID like, it usually wasn't because of him. "Devil's Advocate" (which Pacino 100% made) and "Point Break" (Patrick Swayze & director Kathryn Bigelow were the forces in that one) are 2 of them.
In the last couple of decades DeNiro HAS been typecast, but don't tell me that his acting in "Deer Hunter" & especially "Awakenings" were the same type roles. When people talk about him they usually reference his mob roles and ignore some of the other ones.
Doesn't literally make these actors geniuses of course, just makes them good/great actors.
You want genius in Hollywood? Check more with James Cameron, Stanley Kubrick and Francis Ford Coppolla. Directors have a whole lot more to deal with than actors.

She was really pleased at how the scene developed a life of it's own and happy that it was the scene she was best known for (she was a supporting character in many movies previously). What makes this scene so great is you can emphasize with both sides. You symapthize with Nicholson, who just wants a simple thing like toast (seriously, what diner doesn't offer plain wheat toast?), but you can also sympathize with the waitress, who is just trying to do her job. Anyone who's ever waited on anyone can relate to situations like this.

    • @wallofvideo
      @wallofvideo 9 лет назад +84

that's true. yet at a more symbolic level, the waitress represents uptight, by-the-book inflexibility, while jack's character here represents situational innovation. hence the conflict between jack's character and the waitress is a contest between change (substitution of menu items) & resistance to change (refusal to allow such substitution).

The thing that's so great about this movie is that even though the Vietnam War is never mentioned, you get this very clear vision of what the 70s were like and the mercurial relationship between old-world conformatism and new-world diversity. This is the one scene that really shouts it.
A great scene from a fantastic film.

It is ironic that this was one of his most famous scenes. No substitutions! His grandmother substituted for his mother and his mother pretended to be his older sister. A reporter broke the news to him when he was being interviewed by Time Magazine in 1975. He was amazed that the two women took the secret to their graves. It was another 5 years after this film before his other sister(aunt) confirmed it.
He called his other sister(aunt) up and his sister's husband answered the phone. He exclaimed to him that you aren't going to believe what the reporter told him and the husband paused and said let me put your sister(aunt) on the phone.

Waitress : [points at his menu] No substitutions.
Bobby : What do you mean? You don't have any tomatoes?
Waitress : Only what's on the menu. You can have a number two, a plain omelette, it comes with cottage fries and rolls.
Bobby : Yeah, I know what it comes with, but it's not what I want.
Waitress : Well, I'll come back when you make up your mind
Bobby : Wait a minute, I have made up my mind. I'd like a plain omelette, no potatoes on the plate, a cup of coffee and a side order of wheat toast.
Waitress : I'm sorry, we don't have any side orders of toast. I'll give you an English muffin or a coffee roll.
Bobby : What do you mean you don't make side orders of toast? You make sandwiches, don't you?
Waitress : Would you like to talk to the manager?
    Palm Apodaca : Hey, mac...
    Bobby : Shut up.
    [to the waitress]
Bobby : You've got bread and a toaster of some kind?
    Waitress : I don't make the rules.
Bobby : OK, I'll make it as easy for you as I can. I'd like an omelette, plain, and a chicken salad sandwich on wheat toast, no mayonnaise, no butter, no lettuce, and a cup of coffee.
Waitress : A number two, a chicken salad sand. Hold the butter, the lettuce, and the mayonnaise, and a cup of coffee. Anything else?
Bobby : Yeah, now all you have to do is hold the chicken, bring me the toast, give me a cheque for the chicken salad sandwich, and you haven't broken any rules.
Waitress : You want me to hold the chicken, huh?
Bobby : I want you to hold it between your knees.
    [Palm Apodaca sniggers]
Waitress : [points at a sign behind her] You see that sign, sir? Yes, you'll all have to leave! I'm not taking any more of your smartness and sarcasm!
Bobby : You see this sign?

It's a character study. Unlike 99% of movies playing right now at your local theatre, it doesn't aspire to providing you with 2 hours of wall to wall action and/or laughs. It aspires to doing what theatre (and by exension movies) has been doing for centuries: investigating what it is to be human. I like junk food but sometimes you want a five-course meal.
