I run a paving crew. We use a drum plant for all big runs. Batch plant for driveways and small lots. They are within 5 miles of each other and works nicely for our needs. Gotta love smoking hot asphalt on a sunny 95 degree day.
I use to be a plant operator in Florida in the late 90s. We had an old 3 ton H&B semi batch plant and a Gencor drum plant across town. I miss those days. Long hours and hard work
There’s something to be said for good, old-fashioned hard work, that’s for sure. It’s the blessing of God to find a job like you are describing!

I've worked with an 85t/h asphalt plant as a supervisor. I now want to be a plant operator.
I'm having someone reverse engineer an asphalt plant that can fit in my yard and work with RC's, it will be a complete scale model LOL, hence why I am here to see some details. The plant will fit in a 10 x 10 foot area and actually, work like the real deal!

While driving on a smooth asphalt road, have you ever thought about how the asphalt mix is produced?
Behind me is an asphalt plant, where stone, sand and recycled products are combined with liquid asphalt to create an effective payment material.
It all starts at the stockphiles. Each pile consists of a different sized aggregate, raging from coarser stone to fine sands.
A loader operator hauls stone from the pile to cold feed bins.
Each bins holds a different size aggregate.
A conveyor below the bins feeds aggregates into the asphalt plant.
The plant operator, working in an onsite control room, can adjust how much of each aggregate size is used in the mix.
Usually, the aggregate enters a large, rotating drum, with a gas powered burner on one end.
The aggregate is completely dried by the burner.
One that happens, liquid asphalt is pumped from the heated storage tanks and added to the drum, where the rotation will mix it with the aggregates.
Reclaimed asphalt pavement, or RAP, can also be sent to the drum through a separate cold feed bin and coneyor.
Using these recycled materials reduces cost and is friendlier to the environment.
A continuous plant, or drum plant uses a drum to dry and also mix liquid binder and aggregate together.
It’s the most common type of plant used in the U.S.
A batch plant also uses a drum to dry the aggregates but then sends the dried material to a larger batch tower and then to a mixing chamber where the liquid binder and aggregates are combined.
Once the asphalt is mixed thoroughly and heated, it is sent up to storage silos.
Some silos are only designed to hold material for a short period of time.
Other silos are heated and can store mixes for several days.
Some plants will use more silos depending upon the number of different mix types needed.
Beneath the silos is the loading area.
Dump trucks will receive material and haul it to the paving site.
A weight scale is located on the loading ramp in order to discharge the correct amount of mix for usage.
Once the truck is loaded, the driver is given the signal to transport the asphalt mix to where it’s needed for safe, smooth, and economical roadway construction.

Which is better drum mix or batch mix?
Sam Hodson As far as the asphalt plants go, a drum plant is better suited for continuous runs of large quantities and can typically do so more economically than a batch plant. Drum plants can typically run more recycle asphalt than batch plants. Batch plants are superior when several mix designs are needed throughout the day which is very common in urban areas supplying multiple companies/crews. As far as the actual asphalt goes I feel that batch plant mix is by far the best. Imagine you're making a batch of cookies, you carefully measure each ingredient before adding to the bowl to be mixed. Batch plants work the same way, every ingredient is carefully measured. Ingredients in a drum mix plant are added and mixed continuously. Both are good, I prefer the efficiency of a drum mix plant, but prefer the exceptional quality of mix that a batch plant produces.
