Big fan of both these film makers. I have been listening to their 'advice' and other interviews and the way they go about their business is so different from each other but the results is still the same level of badass. I would love to spend a week at Tarantino's house and learn all about films, then a week with Robert and learn all the technical stuff. Planet Terror is such an awesome movie
47:27 I remember stumbling across this interview many years ago. Right here, Tarantino's off-the-cuff advice to the question about how he overcame the struggles of making in it in the film industry, is something that has embedded itself deep inside my soul. This advice can be applied to any industry or niche one finds themselves in. You are the average of the (five) people you surround yourself with. It's easy to pat yourself on the back for doing amazing things, but it's in comparison to those who aren't doing a whole hell of a lot with their lives. He uses the 100m dash analogy. If you perform the 100m dash with people who are slower than you, you can guarantee coming in first place and that’s great. But if you run with those who are much faster than you, you may come in last, but your time will be better. The difference is, you pushed yourself just a little bit more than you normally would. Tarantino’s philosophy is to be weakest link in the chain, and to surround yourself with like-minded individuals who share similar goals and aspirations. Ideally, it's those who you admire and look up to. This can lead elevating yourself to a higher standard, one that compels you to challenge yourself and constantly improve by virtue of just trying to keep up with those who are ahead of you. Don't be content with being a fish in a puddle. If you want to succeed, seek out new environments and situations that will push you to your limits and beyond. Also, Grindhouse was an amazing experience and Death Proof still remains one of my most beloved Tarantino films. How could anyone forget that epic car chase! One of the greatest moments in cinema history.
I felt bad when the chick in the first 2 minutes was like, “Quentin, you changed cinema with Pulp Fiction. And, uh, Robert.... Weren’t you in a medical research group?”
This is a great video. I was fortunate enough to spend a few weeks on and off Django set with Quentin... He really is a plethora of information, so full of energy and passion when it comes to film. A creative genius... just no other like him :) Love QT to pieces!
My friends and I went to a late showing on Easter weekend back in 2007. We had a total blast! One of the most fun theater experiences ever…shame people just didn’t get the concept.
"A lot of being a director is being a god audience, knowing how you're shooting it, figuring out which part to use and whether you've got it or not." Robert Rodriguez summing up directing so concisely
I LOVE Death Proof. Such a great movie. Of all his films I see it as being the most interesting yet simple. However, Planet Terror was SO special to me. I loved how cheese some characters are while others are so creative. Rose McGowan was just perfect. Sexy, badass, and artistically planned. I just love that movie.
Death Proof is alright but Planet Terror was such great cheese. Weird how people bring up Death Proof a lot more these days (not always positively) but I rarely here people mention planet terror anymore
This movie was the most fun I ever had in a theater( well besides a midnight showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show:-P). I saw it opening weekend with a group of friends, and I became sorta obsessed with the whole idea. It sucks that it didn’t do good at the box office and they didn’t make anymore like they had planned.😫
These two guys are like yin and yang: Digital vs. Film, Action vs. Dialog, California vs. Texas (okay maybe that last one was lame), Either way these two could easily be sworn enemies in the movie making world and they are such great friends and they pool their talents to make great movies together. Maybe there is hope for humanity...in the midst of the "Grindhouse"
Certified genius. Loved Grindhouse, planet terror and the in-film previews especially. these guys love their work so much it is truly inspirational, I feel excited by Quentin Tarantinos genuine excitement. this cannot be faked and should be nurtured by all
It's always like a night out on the town with tarintino and Rodriguez, very enjoyable interview on such a unappreciated amusement park ride known as GRINDHOUSE!!!! Death proof is underrated and such a out the box turn on its head slasher with testosterone!! I remember my mom dropping me off at the theater to catch this moment in my cinema history and I'm glad I did😊
at 47:40 from their, he makes a good point. Its funny how in a matter of hours if not weeks you could make a connection with artist here in Hollywood, they are extremely nice, honest and willing to work with you being that you carry the same or equal inspiration as they do. Worth the travel in my opinion.
I love the way you guys think....here everyone compares them to see who is better ...and in their world...they're friends comparing how many tens of millions their movies made.
What he was trying to say was that in Tarantinos movies there's more focus on the dialog, and in Rodriguez there's more focus on the action. Tarantinos action sequences are great, but his dialog is spectacular.
2:47 I thought my celular was about to ring because that is usually the interference noise my pc makes before my cellular is about to ring and when Quentin noticed the noise, for a second there I felt I was in the twighlight zone.
Love these two directors, and the characters they cast for their movies always seem to be spot on. Keep including Trejo in everything if its a cameo. he has his own cult following and its cool to see him pop up in different movies
Death proof is my personal favorite Quentin movie but I would have loved if we would have seen more of Kurt Russell's character because we are the background of the girls but not him, even just seeing the FBI or whoever was talking to him in the hospital would have been great
Grindhouse lost a bunch of money, but he more than made up for it with IB. BTW, Grindhouse is awesome and I do not understand how that movie didn't make money.
Originally I didn't. Upon multiple, multiple, MULTIPLE viewings, it eventually switched over to where I like both but Death Proof just goes to another level. I lost count how many times I saw this in the theater (three at full price and uncountable--every day for a two week stretch @ the New Beverly Cinema after work at a discount...it popped up there after the initial run was over) and then I saw it at home repeatedly. The only change I'd make to GH is reversing DP to be first, PT 2nd.
You know.................... thinking about it now, should it ever be decided to make an official grindhouse sequel (or maybe a spin off of sorts similar to what jigsaw and spiral did for the saw franchise) i think the next "double feature" should be a hammer films style horror/thriller and the other film should be an oz-ploitation film with an all star Australian cast (take your pick) and if no one is available for faux trailers then why not just show original trailers from the grindhouse days...............at least in my opinion
Holy shit, I was gonna give her a pass at some stuff but trying to sneak in a kiss ass comment in everything just made me rage. mentions 300, *to robert* "But yours was better!"
You either love these guys or you hate them, if you hate them you won't be convinced to like them so people who DO like them there's no use in convincing them
Listening to this, I can't help thinking that trailers do today what posters did back in the day of the double feature. Yet they're the "hook" in a way posters can never be. But like the grindhouse posters, trailers are "exploitative" in the sense that they are about filling seats and less about representing accurately the quality of entertainment the movies really have to offer. I can't tell you how many time I've been suckered by a clever trailer. But the public is getting wiser to these exploitative tactics, and soon the salesmen will have to come up with a newer more radical way to hook us in.
@wanabee100 These two men are not celebrated because their films are full of violence. They are celebrated because of their brilliant film making and directing by taking and bending normal genres to break rules of the "typical" movie. They show Hollywood that yu do not have to conform to the regular fairytale stories to make money. They create their own unique world full of dark comedy and intensity but still are successful despite their lack of conformity. That is why they are celebrated.
I really like Rodriguez, but he's disappointed me with his choices in Shark Boy, and Spy Kids 3 and 4. I hope he makes a big comeback very soon, like Tarantino is with Django.
***** my love grew a bit for him since i commented this. i recognize why his movies can look a bit cheap sometimes. i Like Predators and Dusk till Dawn.
She needs to stop interrupting them mid sentence. On MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS she interrupted Quentin to ask ROBERT question. And her laugh...ugh lady shut up and let them talk.
I love when these two work together.
Never interrupt Quentin.
The dickriding is Crazy

Rodriguez's thing about fear is awesome.

"Quentin, please tell us everything you know". Is what I'd politely ask and then drop the mic.
I felt bad when the chick in the first 2 minutes was like, “Quentin, you changed cinema with Pulp Fiction. And, uh, Robert.... Weren’t you in a medical research group?”

Grindhouse was a great concept it may not have had great Box Office but over the years People have come to appreciate it.
My friends and I went to a late showing on Easter weekend back in 2007. We had a total blast! One of the most fun theater experiences ever…shame people just didn’t get the concept.
It's nice that the interviewer is a fan of filmmaking and that she just lets these 2 legends talk.
was that sarcasm?
Man Bites Dog, Reservoir Dogs, El Mariachi, and Romper Stomper all at one festival?! That kicks so much ass.
I bet you love Man Bites Balls
"A lot of being a director is being a god audience, knowing how you're shooting it, figuring out which part to use and whether you've got it or not." Robert Rodriguez summing up directing so concisely
I really love Grind House.
It makes everything so much better.

This was the best interview ive ever seen..and well worth the time spent watching!I would give my right hand to work with all these great icons!
20:38 - Kids, this is what it used to sound like when you were recording or on a microphone and a cell phone would go off.
Certified genius. Loved Grindhouse, planet terror and the in-film previews especially.

read "Rebel Without A Crew" if you haven't already
Robert Rodriguez Sin City is still one of the best comic book flicks ever made.
pypeworld from dusk till dawn is an amazing film! It's defiantly George clooneys best performance.
I love you, Quentin.
"...drive into a brick wall, just for the experience." Heh-heh-heh, Quentin's so great!
I love the way you guys think....here everyone compares them to see who is better ...and in their world...they're friends comparing how many tens of millions their movies made.
I cant believe I found this!Damn I love youtube!Thanks for posting!
The mid point Between QT and RR is From Dusk Till Dawn, that's the perfect combination of story and action shit all over the place.
Very educational......thaaaaanx for the upload!
I watched Grindhouse in Westwood, L.A. Calif next to UCLA. It was INSANE esp.during QT's car chase (and the mock trailers). RR's movie was great too.
What he was trying to say was that in Tarantinos movies there's more focus on the dialog, and in Rodriguez there's more focus on the action. Tarantinos action sequences are great, but his dialog is spectacular.
Rodregez dialogue is over the top
@@MyRockHoMama thats my jacket, ive been looking for it for two weeks
that sound glitch at the begining of the interview kinda threw me off, i actually banged on my speakers thinkin it was my speakers messin up rotflol
I wish they would rerelease these in cinemas.
2:47 I thought my celular was about to ring because that is usually the interference noise my pc makes before my cellular is about to ring and when Quentin noticed the noise, for a second there I felt I was in the twighlight zone.
if there was a wide re-release in cinemas of grindhouse people would goooo CRAZY!!!!!!!
2 of the greatest directors of all time
My brother watched the car crash scene in "death proof" and it messed him up for a long time.
Just when I think I’ve seen every Tarantino interview, yt throws another one lol
Love these two directors, and the characters they cast for their movies always seem to be spot on. Keep including Trejo in everything if its a cameo. he has his own cult following and its cool to see him pop up in different movies
a very different interview. Great great one.
Ms. time magazine continued to cut off robert rodriguez each time he spoke. he like quentin is a very talented director who deserves being listened to
Death proof is my personal favorite Quentin movie but I would have loved if we would have seen more of Kurt Russell's character because we are the background of the girls but not him, even just seeing the FBI or whoever was talking to him in the hospital would have been great
He just has a really weird and quirky personality. He's not self-obsessed, ignorant or anything. He doesn't see it as stealing Robert's spot-light.
46:08 to 48:40 Inspirational stuff
multiverse
Thanks for uploading, bro! Very intresting.
i want a grindhouse 2 but it didn't make any money
it might actually happen ;)
Right?! Quentin Tarantino wanted to do a martial arts film in another double feature, I believe!!! XD
+Oberhauser What if they did a Quentin Horror with a Machete sequel?
Rob Zombie X Eli Roth
Fuckin a he mentioned one of my all time favourite slasher films: Sleepaway Camp!...Sorry for that being so random lol
I fuckin love that dash analogy.
Quentin really knows his car chases...
0:42:24 That statement is ironic, as in Death Proof during the first car crash it is shown several times from many different angles repeatedly...
How many of you look around for your mobile phone at 2:48?
Robert Rodriguez seems like a quiet kinda guy.
Also, El Mariachi and From Dusk till Dawn
I hate that Grindhouse wasn't very successful. You can see their passion for it. Shame
Grindhouse lost a bunch of money, but he more than made up for it with IB. BTW, Grindhouse is awesome and I do not understand how that movie didn't make money.
0:42.24 That statement is ironic, as in Death Proof during the first car crash it is shown several times from many different angles repeatedly...

What do you mean, "Like Tarantino is with Django?" Was Tarantino ever in a low point that he would need a comeback?
Thumbs up if you liked Planet Terror more
I love you Tarantino but LET RODRIGUEZ TALK!!! big fan :p
is Robert Rodriguez asleep at 36:46 and then at 37:04 he wakes up?
The interviewer looks like Elverna Bradshaw
Planet Terror was hard to watch. Death Proof is underrated.
Grindhouse was a legendary view in the movie theater for me. Great memory. I was disappointed it wasn't a big hit.
