Here’s how the Dodge Charger was three different cars over its lifetime

  • In this episode I provide the history of the Dodge Charger. It started in 1966 as a luxury car, but soon evolved into a muscle car, and became famous for its roles in Bullitt and Dukes of Hazzard. But in 1975, with the gas crisis in full effect, the Charger lost its muscle car status and went back to a luxury car. It then sadly became a subcompact with a 4 cylinder from 1981-1987, but was resurrected in 2006 as a rear-drive sedan, and would eventually become the fastest sports sedan on the market, before it finally ended in 2023.

The FWD Charger didn’t have the Volkswagen 1.7 liter, it came with a tuned 2.2 liter, with straight exhausts. I owned one of the test mules. The exhaust notes were quite exhilarating and the vehicle , like the Mustang II, probably allowed it to become a powerful vehicle and resume its title.

I used to own the 69th Shelby charger ever built as per it's vin number. It has a straight exhaust also, and a tuned 2.2L with one hell of a cam, and a big 2barrel Holley. This video claimed barely over 100hp. That is way off. Little monster would fly. I sold it and it's fully restored and in the Carrol Shelby museum now. Man I miss that car. Glad it's in the museum though.

The sad part is like usual Dodge will be forced to use their parent company’s chassis. But instead of a solid Mercedes chassis they’ll be using an unreliable trouble ridden Alfa chassis. This chassis sharing has already moved Cherokees to the bottom of Consumer Reports. Dodge will move further down with reliability and lose its core buyer base.

That car had over 170 hp when 16v GTI's has 123 hp and Civic Si's had 106. They even developed a faster one. One with 400 HP. I worked as a mechanic at a Chrysler dealer near the headquarters. We prepped all Chrysler cars for the auto shows. An engineer brought the prototype in to the dealer. He said on 1-2 shifts, the car would shift a lane, due to torque steer. They were working on that. Before they could bring it to market, GM bought out the head supplier, killing the engine.

I woulda given alot more credit to the FF1 charger supra drag race. The year was 2000 and that 1 scene was so huge i can say if it didnt happen the rwd charger of 2006 never woulda seen production.
