  • We take a look at the upcoming Super Pocket handhelds which are the debut devices created by Ultra Mega Tech. 💰 WHERE TO BUY: geni.us/U6dPzNB & geni.us/A7aaJ
    They aren't completely new to the scene though because they're a part of Blaze Entertainment who own the Evercade line of systems which opens up the door to allow the Super Pocket consoles to be compatible with Evercade cartridges.
    But how are these devices different to what's already being offered by Evercade and what games are currently available on them? Let's take a look!

    Operation Wolf didn't use a lightgun. The gun was mounted to a rotary controller under the panel so including it makes sense.

      Nope. Operation Wolf used a light gun. It was mounted to the panel but it was a light gun. That's why the screen flashed. However, Operation Thunderbolt used a positional gun like Terminator 2. 😉

    Everything in this review is accurate.
    I have Evercade VS, EXP and OG handhelds. I still bought both the super pockets because the battery lasts WAY longer than the EXP and it actually fits into any pocket to carry around whilst traveling. Also because my EXP was expensive and now I can save it and use the pockets day to day out and about!
    It’s also amazing value at €59,99. For me, a no brainer for anyone who doesn’t own an Evercade and likes retro gaming. But also different enough to those who do have one!

    As someone who owns an Evercade EXP and has a VS on Pre-Order, and is obviously invested in that entire ecosystem, it's still tempting to get a 'Pocket' as a throw around, cheaper device, to sling in a bag.
    Yes the EXP serves the exact same purpose, but there's something about that device that I worry about breaking or damaging, especially as mine is a black edition.
    And because the 'save progress' saves into the cartridge, you can play on one, and just move between devices.
    On the other hand, if you don't have any Evercade device yet, I would probably recommend the EXP as it's ultimately a better device.

    To make a cartridge based console at this price-point is ready commendable. Of course it’s made to encourage more people into the Evercadecollectors community. But that’s not a bad thing. Rom based Chinese handhelds are ten a penny.

      @@RetroDodo I went for the Taito Edition, something different for me as I've played mostly capcom stuff growing up...even though the yellow unit looks sick! Also picked up Full Void to support the developers and the Delphine Collection. I actually never liked the Evercade Brand and their Hardware aesthetics just didn't do it for me. So the Super Pocket is perfect, and now I can experience the Evercade Carts. I am super pleased that Indie developers who want their game on a Cartridge can now do it, just like FULL VOID.

    I bought a couple of these and they're an absolute hit - although not necessarily in the way I expected. I don't have any Evercade device, but I was pretty interested in this one. The single player only for me is a deal breaker though, considering that I'm sure it wouldn't have been too difficult to implement a connection with a simple USB-C cable. And, as you say, it would have been a fantastic throwback to multiplayer on the Game Boy.

    Multiplayer via Link would be really awesome...

  • @Cynbel_Terreus
    @Cynbel_Terreus 8 месяцев назад

    I will wonder if link functionality would be possible in the future. We technically do not know how the USB-C port is set up until someone does a tear down. But it could in theory be set up to eventually allow for that. Unless they have specifically said this will not be the case, but I don't know that the EXP even supports multiplayer. (Ironically the EULA for the Super Pocket mentions basically not abusing chat or other users of the device, which generally I would think would apply if the device had well multiplayer or internet capabilities.)
    I would assume this might exist down the road for both, as the VS and plenty of Evercade games do support multiplayer. (Would have loved a limited edition EXP and VS though but only found out about the Evercade this year, I hate when black is a limited color. I did order the Duke Nukem VS though, that makes up for the VS a bit as it's actually pretty cool even if it's not black. Here's hoping EXP gets some cool limited scheme eventually. And yes I did get the transparent Super Pockets)

    My only two problems with the Super Pocket, and what I've seen but not personally experienced in person myself, are the increased price due to the official branding from Capcom & Taito (them and Namco being why all of these Pac-man/Street Fighter/etc plug-and-play consoles and mini-arcade-cabinets cost four times as much as they should), and the d-pad. I like + shaped d-pads, I like some circle pads, but a weak + shape on a circle is possibly the only thing worse than the original Xbox 360's d-pad.

      This thing plays up to PS1, there are a couple on a couple of Evercade carts already and they play fine on this. What will define how these are regarded is not what they can't do but the simplicity and aesthetic design and durability. As long as they can go in a pocket and take a few bumps and the buttons don't wear out in five minutes the older retro gamer like me will be very happy with them. I can't be arsed with complex retro boxes when my computer can emulate a thousand times better, if I wanted to play AAA games on the go I'd get something like a Steam Deck and just take my PC library on the go. There is also nothing from the Shenzhen backroom solderers' product ranges that are as stylish.

The idea that the firmware was buggy on the original console is a problem. Even though, it’s ok to pay publishers for their past games. I think the format sucks. Yes, the games are cheap considering today’s games but the collections on the cart are lacking. We really need a iTunes format for older games. The original system is nothing more than an emulator just like the other two. AtGames had the same thing called the Sega Portable with a SD card instead of the cartridge. Companies like Capcom and Taito wouldn’t even allow Evercade to print the cartridges. The original system was about $75 and different themes so it’s ok.

      Remember when Blaze tried that with their Gamegadget? That console was supposed to be supported by the iTunes of gaming but in the end only had about 15 Megadrive titles on it.

    I'd have liked if the games weren't even technically built in, but instead just came with an Evercade cartridge with the games on it.
    In terms of production, they would have not needed to have as much or any on board from storage as it would migrate to the cart, and they wouldn't need to mould a dust cover, so I think that wouldn't have even increased the price of the unit that much.
    But then as you collect these, you can keep the handheld on display but keep playing the games on your favorite color Super Pocket, or an Evercade.
    But I would imagine the licensing for "installable/moveable software that can run on multiple devices" is vastly more expensive than "built in software only on the copyright holder's branded device."

    I never understood the concept of the cheap Chinese Emulator handhelds. They're underpowered with weird or copy and paste designs. But the major issue is there lack of power, since they built from old recycled phones. Your phone is way ahead in terms of power, connect a controller and a gamepad and your set. Then you have the Switch and the Steam Deck which makes these even more useless. But the Super Pocket is nice with its Evercade cart support and official licence, a nice novelty to anyone's collection. I wish it had 6 Buttons with a landscape design.

    If you decide to get this Super Pocket instead of a rom-based system, you're only supporting the people who own the licenses now. It's preposterous to think you're helping out the original devs who poured hours of work into the code. With most of these companies, devs didn't get residuals, royalties, or anything like that. Do you think Taito or Capcom are going to track down Japanese devs who made an hourly wage and didn't own their work to give them royalty checks? No. It's very suspicious of this channel to assume that they would.
    The ONLY people being "supported" are Capcom, Taito, and Blaze. Maybe some lawyers. Downloading a rom doesn't denigrate the previous work by devs any more than buying a used game would. I'm also unsubscribing. I don't trust this channel any longer.

    • @RetroDodo
      @RetroDodo  9 месяцев назад +2

      That's all very true with the retro games and you have a lot of good points, however the reason I stated you would be helping the developers is because Evercade have a lot of cartridges dedicated to indie games where small developers and studios would see a return on sales.
      I hope that clarifies what I was trying to say!

    I can honestly say that my Evercade EXP is one of the worst handhelds that I own - very uncomfortable to hold with sharp edges, it overheats soon after switching on and the speakers are weak with tiny sound. If this new handheld is worse than the EXP then I am staying clear of it.

    • @Jbrodack
      @Jbrodack 8 месяцев назад

      The evercade exp made some good improvements over the original evercade but does have it's own issues. I wouldn't say it overheats but does get very warm. The dpad is actually worse than the original and it's not as comfortable to hold. On the plus side you get extra built in games, a better screen, wifi, and tate mode.
