Yes, there is target odor inside the box, so the dog is putting their nose as close as possible to the target odor to earn the reward. If we get the dogs to indicate empty boxes (no target odor), that's practicing false alerts (an error).
Great question. While teaching, I give multiple rewards at source, to help the dog focus there and stay there longer. In the proofing stages, I do some rewards away from source, to prepare for times I can't physically get there e.g. triple bunk bed search, debris pile, etc. In those cases, I need to watch my dog perform independently at a distance.
@@carlalsimon Thanks for the explanation! I am new to scentwork with my 17 week old standard poodle puppy and am trying to collect all of the tips I can.
WOnderful indication! Carla Simon is the best teacher I met in years! Her Online courses are worth taking

Is there target odor in the box? Or is the reward for the pup placing its muzzle in the box? 5:49

Thank you Carla. You share so much good info.
Thanks for taking the time to comment Sheila!
Why not rewarding at source?

Suggest rewarding at source with multiple food rewards with your new pup. Good luck!
