  • Fixing my Thetford Aqua Magic Galaxy RV toilet in my 1989 Born Free 26 foot Class C RV. The gasket kit cost $50. The issue was the toilet was not holding water when it was sitting. The water should stay there to keep any odors from the Black tank from entering the living space.

Thanks for the video, went round and round with the local rv parts stores, They all told me parts not available for this toilet, but you showed me the part number, 40 bucks later from amazon and now its fixed. Thanks again!

Good video. Thanks for posting. Showing the part number for the seal kit and pointing out there might be a seal in there you don’t need was huge. A lot of people will also use a cloth and buffing rouge to remove any light scratches in the blade. It’s a slow process, but worth the time. Having just completed this job I’d like to offer a few other tips of my own, from the school of hard knocks.
Before you disassemble the foot pedals, take some photos of how they all go together. Remove the springs first, before removing any mounting screws for the pedal assembly. The springs were a PIA to deal with. Be aware that some parts may go flying in this process, and I was fortunate to be inside my trailer so it was easy to track down parts that got loose.
I accidentally broke off one of the plastic lugs that a screw for the pedal assembly goes into. I was able to repair that mistake with primer and cement rated for PVC, CPVC, and ABS plastic pipe. I let that repair sit for 24 hours before final assembly.
Have the foot pedal assembly mounted before attaching the springs, and know they will be a PIA to put back on. Brake spring pliers can be used for the water valve pedal but they are too large to use for the flush pedal.
I think it is smart leaving the water hose connected to the flush mechanism, the one that washes out the flush blade and seal. However, with all the tension you put on that hose during the repair, when it all goes back together, make sure it is still firmly attached. Mine had worked loose from up inside the toilet, where it connects near the top of the bowl. Although it looked like it was in place, it blew loose during the test flush and I had to pull the toilet a second time in order to be able to get in there and reattach it.

Thank goodness I found this video. I have 2 problems and I'm wondering if I solve one will the other follow or will I have to buy the part to fix? So my flap will not close all the way so maybe it has toilet paper inside. Dunno I bought it that way. And the water will not stop flowing with the flush pedal all the way up. I'm wondering if its because the flap won't close all the way. It has to be since when you push both down the water will start to flow also. And mine doesnt flow as fast as yours did. I dunno depending on how much I have to spend and I don't know if the repair kit will do the job. If the part itself is broke then I think i should just buy a whole toilet... Hmmm... I'm alittle hesitant to pull the unit without ordering the repair kit first atleast..

@@paulricharddeguzman6753 I rarely check messages here therefore the late reply. You may have solved the problem already but I will give my best guess anyway. I suspect that you have two problems. The first is that the linkage to the water valve is broken or has somehow come disconnected and that is why water in the toilet runs even when the pedal is up. The flap not closing may be due to debris clogged in that groove, or possibly broken pieces of the pedal linkage to the water valve blocking the mechanism externally to keep it from closing. You will have to remove the toilet and take the assembly off the bottom to see for sure.

What a handy man you are, well done! Interesting to see how its taken apart. I have to install the bottom flange seal, and needed to see how it sat on the toilet since I threw away the old one before getting the new one. Thanks!

YAhoo! It works again! Thanks for the video. My toilet has the same problem and I'll face the challenge as soon as it's warm again. Great job showing the repair and walking through it!

Thanks again for this vid. I used a 1/2 inch wrench and socket for the bolts. Was a lot easier than I thought, had the toilet out in 5 minutes. The worst part was cleaning the crap off the plates. They could have given just a tad more of the rolled up seal as I had to stretch it to get it all the way around the plate. Also the extra seal that you weren't sure about, is for a newer toilet. I had the old style seal in mine.

Thanks for the video, Just finished rebuilding the toilet in my 1989 motorhome, working perfect now, plumbers grease worked a treat for inserting the seal that was giving you trouble to insert.

I have found some RV stores don't want to deal with the older models. I was at one dealer asking for parts and they said "what year? oh, you need to speak with our new sales dept, it's time to buy a new one". I had just bought my 1989 4 months previously. Needless to say, I have not been back to that dealer. I found a nice small 3 person RV garage to get my parts and repair things I don't do myself.

Just like you said, I had a piece of toilet paper blocking the channel for the blade. Replaced all the seals regardless. Thanks for a great video. Btw. I decided not to put that extra seal in as mine didn't have it in the first place.

You made it look easy .... my old Thetford had 12 years of full-time use .... and it finally started leaking .... you would be disgusted by the gunk which had built up over the years .... got it out ok, but disassembling the mechanism was a chore ... removing springs under pressure was skipped in the video .... and the instruction sheet did not clearly identify which gasket went where ... also the diagram did not show how to put the mechanism back together .... calling Thetford did not help ... they did not have an exploded diagram of the mechanism .... after 8 hours I got it all back together .... and it leaks faster than before ... probably got the seals mixed up .... again the instructions were terrible ..... so I wrote a bad review on Amazon .... and have decided to replace the whole toilet with a ceramic Dometic .... good riddance to Thetford!!

after i flush mine, the water keeps running. i think the foot pedal doesnt go all the way up. what do you think is causing the foot pedal from going back to the closed position?

  • @1mattt2

I don't recall the size of the nut. I did use swivel and bunch of extensions for the back nut. Be patient with both nuts. The back one was tricky because of the swivel and the front one I used an open ended wrench and only got 1/4 of a turn each time.

I need to do the same. Finding this video was hard. Searching RV blade seal toilet repair didn't do it. Perhaps you could edit your video title to include "Blade Seal".
    Thanks for the info.

Thank you for this very informal video Matt. My boyfriend and I are in a 1984 Winnebego, our first RV, and our Aqua Magic Toilet has water leaking out from behind at the top, I think near the vacuum breaker but not 100%, every time we flush. The water that leaks out usually can be soaked up by a towel and then will continue to dry throughout the next day or 2 but since just a few days ago, we started seeing DOUBLE the amount of water leak onto the floor and it is very wet (spreads out about 3 feet from the toilet). We are wary to replace parts on toilet ourselves, but I am very good at comprehending instructions and my boyfriend is pretty handy with the basics of fixing most things. What do you think, if any of the info I gave was helpful, our problem part could be?

13mm another guy said half inch, and you dont go in through the hole in the seat, you look in the hole and put the wrench around back and inside to get the back bolt

@@tecvoidltd 13 and 1/2 same same. A couple of extensions, universal joint and a deep socket make it easy to get at the rear bolt going thru the hole. I didnt have room for my hands to get to that bolt from the rear
