- "Pistol" Pete Maravich The forgotten magician was at least 25 years ahead of his time he was a basketball prodigy the greatest scorer in NCAA history by far! 44.2 pts 6.4 reb 5.1 ast with no 3pt line! those numbers are just f**kin mind boggling...averaged 24.2 pts 4.2 reb 5.4 ast for his NBA Career arguably the best passer and ball handler of all time this dude was a problem! and isn't brought up enough in barber shop talk Pistol is kinda unappreciated in my book he was the first white male to be offered a million dollar contract by The Harlem Globetrotters...Pete could've been top 5 of all time in a better structure and if his demons didn't get the best of him at key stages of his life he died at the very young age 40 due to a bad heart he wasn't even suppose to make it pass 12 years old so that has to add to his mystic...Pistol fathered a lot of things you see till this very day he was Showtime before Showtime
Remember they used to actually CALL traveling violations
And 3 seconds and palming the ball now all they do is call fouls every once in awhile andthe players cry everytime one iscalled on them
I am now 55 and remember this man, UNREAL !! A man of GOD also the end of his life at just 40 in 1988....Hear what all the NBA greats say about him here !! No color to GREATNESS !!
And he did it without “carrying” or “palming”.....which is rampant in today’s game

@@Mr.56Goldtop Exactly right. I'd forgotten how much Jordan did that. He did it routinely. Not a peep from the officials. It's ugly basketball, but those guys weren't exactly purists.

In Pete’s 68 point game 18 of his field goals were beyond the current NBA 3 point line. If he would have scored it with today’s line, he would have had 86 points, and 2nd all time in points in a single game, behind of course Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game.
If Pistol Pete played in today's game, he'd be a top 10 all-time player
Actually, a lot of current NBA players can do a lot of what he did. And Pete would be flummoxed by today's cross-over dribbles. But he was a pioneer.

One of the first times the NBA shot itself through idiocy. They had Pete and Dr. J in Atlanta. They loved playing with each other. The Doctor said he would have stayed in Atlanta his whole career. Imagine.
Well, not exactly. It was late in the ABA-NBA war...fall of 1972, and the ABA only had a few seasons to go before the leagues would merge. So it was still war, and the ABA Virginia Squires went to court to hold onto him. Which of course happened, or we probably would have an 'Atlanta Hawks' in the historic line of NBA champions. And maybe Pistol never goes to New Orleans...

I have watched basketball all of my life and if I had to pick the ALL-TIME GREATEST BASKETBALL TEAM, I would pick the following players: PETE MARAVICH , DAVID THOMPSON , LARRY BIRD , TIM DUNCAN , and BILL WALTON. Taken together, these are the most fundamentally sound PLAYERS in the HISTORY OF THE GAME.

Pete was different. He could have gone free agent, but he believed in the guys around him, whoever they were. So he wanted to win with THEM instead of looking for a tailor-made championship situation, with superstar players. He only asked for a trade out of Atlanta because his and Fitzsimmons's relationship was broken. And throughout the losing years, he never asked for a trade out of New Orleans. The cruel part? It was coming together just as he suffered his January, 1978 injury.

Growing up in the midwest we just heard about Maravich. Seems he was a legend before we ever saw him.

A serious player that far ahead of his time. One of the best when healthy and before the knee injury. Never had a great team around him although they were quality players.

Thank You for posting this - simply put, a poignant reminder of the greatest basketball player of all time. He came from my hometown of Pittsburgh and growing up in the 70's he was legend then here, and everywhere - and still is.

Man if he could of played vis freshman year his college numbers would be even greater and really untouchable with no 3 point line either that just amazing pistol is one of the greatest ever. RIP pistol

He is one of the greatest if he could of played with Boston longer with his career he could of one rings with bird if he was just a little younger him and bird and McHale parish would of been a nasty team. he finally got to play with teammates who would actually pass the ball back to him. what he achieved at Boston showed how dominant he could have been has he played with actual TEAM PLAYERS

@@Mistachill no they weren't, he mostly had to go 1 on 1 as rarely, no never, passed him the ball. the coach had to insist he was passed too. in Boston, Archibald, bird, and cowens were exceptionally great passers

Lol I thought the same thing. Bird is my basketball guy. I remember watching bird and thinking how did he do that,how does he come up with this stuff? Then I started studying pistol and I got my answer
@@clifflawrence7479 - for me, bird is the greatest all around player ever. past and present. the 86' celtics were probably the best team ever. the first time i wore my bird tank top to work one day, i was met with a lot of playful scorn from some coworkers. bird destroyed the souls of philly fans pretty bad...lol.
@@skullduggery3377 he is definitely one of my favorites and no offense to James I think the best small forward to ever play. Him and mj I always had as my one and two but I've studied some and watched some kareem was a bad boy. Just like bird and mj nearly unstoppable. Of course James fans go back to defense and they don't understand how underrated he was. Then you look at there defensive stats and they are almost identical until you get to defensive rebounds and bird blows him away. Then you look at defensive win shares and again bird comes out on top. James fans don't understand this. James is faster! James is stronger! James can jump higher! They don't understand that bird had the highest basketball iq of anybody that ever played the game. That meant he didn't have to be fast because he was always 3 or 4 steps ahead of the competition. Then throw in things that can't really be measured, heart and clutch

I don't think he ever really got the respect he deserved while playing down there. Even his teammates were dicks to him, despite him being the reason for filling the seats.

Pistol was the ONLY white man offered a position with the HARLEM GLOBE TROTTERS, an all black basketbal team with extraodinary basketball skills who incorporated comedy in their presentation. There were no other white players who exhibited skills that came close to the Harlem Globe Trotters standard of play.
