    I really enjoy getting and striving for different tones from my favorite players. The longer I play, the more important practicing is to getting "tones." You can nail waveforms and band width frequencies. It's harder to nail the percussive ferocity of SRV'S style.

  • @gregglick4864

    Excellent! I personally would have thrown in the Boss Dimension C DC 2w for the SRV Testify track for the added thickness. I think I remember hering something about SRV using a Roland Dimension D during the recording of Texas Flood, and many even Couldn't stand the Weather recordings. Pretty spot on either way. Love to see this kinda stuff. Great work, guys.

      @VertexEffectsInc It's all good, but it would be cool to see a follow-up video regarding SRV's studio/live tone. Maybe add the Boss Dimension C DC2w to another SRV tone recreation. I know it's a lotta work just to do that, but it's very cool to see those results. You've got one of the most informative channels for guitar players on RUclips. Thanks for all that you do.

  • @codybaggett9741
    @codybaggett9741 4 месяца назад +5

    There is a noticeable frequency in the mids that isn't as pronounced in the pedal and bandmaster compared to SRV. The effects make a significant difference in the Eric Johnson tune. The high mids or low treble is more pronounced on Burning Room. It sounds close enough to get the "dumble sound" but not quite enough to perfectly emulate - just depends on how picky someone is. Nobody would be able to tell in a band context.
    Another note on Burning Room, are you sure that song used a Dumble? I don't believe Mayer always used a Dumble...

    • @VertexEffectsInc
      @VertexEffectsInc  4 месяца назад +3

      I think that a lot of the differences are attributed to the fact that we can’t hear what was recorded straight off the mic in a lot of these cases, and we’re getting a mixed in mastered version that we’re trying to replicate with the similar studio equipment, microphones, etc. I’m sure if we wanted to use a bunch of different plug-ins, we could probably make it closer, but the intent here was just to use the pedals in order to get there. I consulted with Justin Jeske regarding songs that used the steel string singer, this was his recommendation. He seems to be one of the most knowledgeable people out there as far as the equipment is concerned, and where it was used.

    I personally think the main that’s “off” is the actual pickups used (old vs new vs custom made etc). As far as matching the tones, that’s an area you can’t compensate for. Plus the fingers that are playing it ha.

      I left a lot of these decisions up to Tim, as he was the one learning the parts note for note, it’s interesting, because we looked at a lot of different live footage, and there’s mixed positions between the neck and middle, and just the neck alone, depending on which video it was. Nevertheless, I thought this tone overall was closest for Eric Johnson of all three examples.

    The difference could be the heavier string guage Stevie used.

  • @jakobmorningstar
    @jakobmorningstar 4 месяца назад

    SRV sound (in my opinion) plays better with dead strings. I think because he played them so hard they died quick so the sounds were used to have a lot more softness than you get with brand new strings. I’ve noticed this while playing SRV stuff myself on a stray that hasn’t had strings changed in a while

  • @johnschoppmusic

    I honestly think Slow Dancing In A Burning Room just needed a little more spring reverb to match the recording…at least through my setup..

    • @VertexEffectsInc
      @VertexEffectsInc  4 месяца назад +2

      We tried a couple of different techniques, and I think that this might’ve been a combination of room, Reverb, and maybe the room itself, in probably coming after the microphone. I think we could get a lot closer if we were adding a bunch of plug-ins to this, but the intent of this test was to try to re-create everything with pedals in front of the amp. It should also be said that the Reverb inside of the amplifier would be coming after the preempt section, where is, we were running it in front of the amplifier, so the signal path there is somewhat hard to replicate with the guitar pedal, because the spring reverb wouldn’t be before the input of the amplifier.

    It's cool and interesting, but these are very different sound characters.
    In all three cases, you have deeper reverb and a flatter, ringier sound than the original. The guitar lacks "physicality" in your sound options. I don't know how else to express it. All the originals have a characteristic boost in the midrange, which you don't have.

    • @Jurgen-po1ym
      @Jurgen-po1ym 4 месяца назад

      I hear the same. In the original tracks the mic‘ed dumble has a 3D sound. The guitar breaths. You can hear the tube amp working. The copies are sounding flat in comparison

  • @anthonylathrop7251
    @anthonylathrop7251 4 месяца назад

    This is really impressive. To my ear the guitar / amp tones are very, very similar. The biggest difference I hear between the original masters and the recreations is that the recreations sound more hi-fi and more detailed - which (heresy alert) - I actually prefer over the originals.

    • @BuddyBlues

      Nah they help a lot. The guitar player in this clip is indeed phenomenal. I’m an ok guitar player, but my vertex SSS helps me get as humanly possible close to John mayer’s clean tone, and the SRV version helps me tremendously get into SRV territory. And LORD knows I can’t play like either John Mayer and SRV. Watch the vertex channel from the past 2 years. The dude really isn’t trying to sell you or push you on his pedals, they sell themselves. He just genuinely enjoys the hunt for tone. If this “little box” can help me get close to the tone of my heroes without replicating their unattainable rigs, why the heck not. It’s fun to play guitar. Happy Valentine’s Day
