There really should have been a magnetic variant for the USB standard.
There are 3rd part cable makers that have that. The part that plugs into the phone barely sticks out, and snaps to the rest of the cable.
@@pyrojj I've seen them and they seem pretty cool, however it's not the same as having a USB standard that does it.
In the land of hypothetical, imagine a phone that has some sort of USB pad instead of a plug. Yes wireless charging is a thing, but it doesn't compare to having a physical game connected.
not enough power... hence why they gave up on it..
it would destroy hard drives
groszak1 magnets (with pretty high power, unless your setting the magnet on the actual drive) only damage spinning platter hard drives.... Not SSD, or flash style drives. And in the case of apples demonstration with magsafe connectors on their laptops for years.... Use a magnet that isn't very powerful so it doesn't matter what the drive is. So yes, a large rare earth magnet or something similar will damage a drive, but it unless your under weird circumstances, you could have a bag of basic magnets sitting on your computet, as long as they aren't within like a foot or two the hard drive, while its in use.

I had the unfortunate circumstance that my laptop charger broke while I was on vacation in the USA. Now I have a US outlet chargers, and nowhere to use it.
Lucky back home I could claim warranty on my European charger, so at least I didn't had to buy 2 new chargers.
I’m pretty sure that there are adapters from us outlets - Europe outlets
I've never seen a fixed power cable on a laptop charger before. Surely you can get a standard cable with a local plug on it?
For the most part laptop chargers are dull voltage - supporting 120 and 2240. With a symple pin adapter you should be able to use the US charger in Europe.
M-m-maybe you can go to China. I think they use the same plug, but I'm not sure
....so just swap out the wall power lead. That's the only difference on international models.
This is why I always record my chargers’ specs. My favorite place to pick up spares and replacements is Goodwill. Other secondhand stores work too, just make sure the specs are the same for your device.

Oh hello there
Wanted a backup adapter for my (4) HP Spectre laptops. Price was $200 each... to power a $850 laptop. Oh and the cord that connects it to the wall outlet, that's sold separately for an additional $25.
That's some apple tactics right there
That definitely is the most annoying thing about laptops, even before them often not being correctly labeled at the USB-C port so you can tell if it supports displays and/or charging. I work for a big german hardware retailer and it's so annoying that there often is no easy way to find replacement chargers for customers. It makes me sick how many different connectors there are even when you look at just one brand. There definitely is no necessity for this (not at this scale). Laptop producers have a big opportunity be become more customer friendly here.
1:52 i had this happen to me once, my charger broke so i tried to use one from an old laptop while i waited for the new one to get here, i couldnt even open games while using that thing
That's just an excuse. Laptop manufacturers CAN create a universal charging connector with same voltage for all laptops, they just aren't willing to. It would be WAY better for convenience of the user and the environment if we had a single standard for gaming laptops, but nope, manufacturers don't want that.
Until USB-C can push 100+ Watt comfortably, it's unlikely to make much of a dent in the laptop charger market. I'd much rather see a dedicated, universal charger connector type that's just for charging. Ideally with a feature like Magsafe.
Magsafe saved a few of my Macbooks from getting pulled onto the ground when someone tripped over the cord, so I know first-hand how great that system was. 'Was', because Apple abandoned it and uses USB-C so that now you can have your $2,500 Macbook crash into the ground just like a $500 Walmart laptop using a barrel jack charger.
2:47 "HP's USB-C connectors still require HP chargers, according to the company."
That's false. I have an HP Probook 430 for client work and a personal HP Envy x360 13" OLED and they both work off an $8.99 Anker 60 watt USB-C charger.
The same charger works for my Dell Latitude 14" corporate laptop and my Lenovo 910.
So... yeah, if you care at all about this just get a laptop with USB-C charging and make sure whatever USB-C charger you buy supports the voltage range you need.
They probably say that because some idiot will grab a low power phone charger and act surprised when a 5W charger won't charge a 50W laptop.
my envy x360 comes with a barrel-type power supply but also supports PD on its USB-C port. 60W PD supplies will charge it normally, but 18W will only charge when it's powered off and obviously much slower (but it's kind of useful you can use a phone-style charger in a pinch). there's next to no official documentation on it though, particularly about whether it can work with the 45W profile (i've measured it at up to about 59W on a 65W charger) since i've found exactly one PD charger on the market that uses a detachable input cable and extra A ports but isn't a bulky 6-port monstrosity and it's only 45W

I've got an iGo laptop charger from 10 years ago that claimed to be a universal replacement that just needed to replace tips, but as far as I can tell the company's no longer around and you can't find tips for newer laptops. The Surface Pro 2 charger had a major issue in that it was designed for the US market and failed to charge if the mains current dropped below a certain amount. i discovered this in Western Australia during the afternoon in summer when the mains current drops due to use of A/C by the population. Another problem these companies are superficially creating is that they are starting to not allow 3rd party chargers to charge laptops and pops up a warning saying it’s not their proprietary charger and won’t charge because of it. They claim it’s to safe guard the laptop but they could easily just provide a warning that it’s not a safe charger but let it do it’s thing.

What happened to the Golden medium between thin-and-lights and THICC heavy gaming laptops? You know, the ones that are a little over half an inch thick with full sized ethernet jacks without feeling like chonky beasts from the early 2000s. the thin-and-light craze is driving me nuts, cool to look at in a show room and it has its place, but doesn't mean stop making designs just thick enough to have a ethernet jack , plus more room for cooling. Dont forget that even tho MagSafe chargers have same endings (1 or 2) they are different electrically. 85W charger has wastly different V and A then 60W despite having same connector at the end.
If you want to have multiple variations of charger power you should variate Amps and leave Volts at the same. Using a wrong charger stresses your mac battery and shortens its life (applies to both big charger to small laptop or small charger to big one, but the smaller charger damages big batteries more as they have not enough V)
Just had this experience with my general dynamics laptop. Asked a guy in the store where they had the chargers and the first thing he asks is what brand i have. Not exactly sold on store shelves but they used a fairly standard connector thankfully. Told him i had an Asus as i have an asus laptop that uses the same connector
