Now that I've watched an old video of Cooper I will visit Coopers profile to see how far he has come, as my Cane Corso talking dog is becoming popular talking on sound buttons. Most fun Ive ever had with my dogs in a lifetime.😂
They can learn to push them in order and associate the sound - no different than any other dog training where they link a word with an outcome. I did see one video many months ago where the dog pressed "why Mom poop" and the woman had a whole conversation with the dog about why she pooped. Well... as long as they are both happy I guess...
@Gail Everett I think the scientists will agree with Bruce to be honest. My dog once asked me for a cup of tea - not by pressing any buttons, but by dashing into the living room as though she was desperate to go outside, then standing staring at the kettle. When I asked, rather baffled, "do you want a cup of tea?" she danced around and licked her lips. She'd learned the phrase "cupoftea" because those are the words I repeatedly used when I was making one for her (no sugars, more warm milk than anything else). If there were five buttons that said "I want cup of tea" and she learned to press them in order (and only then got her reward) then I could have trained her to do that too. But why put a dog through that when one button would do? It's a fun thing to do for training and a great way to engage with a dog but a far better way is if the human just paid more time and attention getting to know their dog - they are speaking all the time.
@Gail Everett my dog is no more, unfortunately, but she was the dearest thing in my life and still is to this day. I used to have a cup of tea first thing in the morning and make one for her using the same tea bag and then add a load of cold milk. I was stunned when she stood at the open back door and wouldn't go out. I thought she was desperate for a wee. But then she burned a hole in the kettle with her eyes and looked back at me and back at the kettle. She was so happy with herself for getting her request across. So in this instance, a single button would have done...but I doubt they have one that says "tea" 🤣 I can see after your explanation how the buttons would be useful for a dog. What was bugging me was the "human like sentences" - not from people like you who clearly know how to coach, but from those who think they are having conversations - verbally - with their dogs when they are clearly pressing random buttons and getting very confused. Some of the examples I've seen have been really poor. I love that your daughter's dog can ask to have her ears scratched and then ask on behalf of another dog. That's really beautiful to hear 😊💫
@Gail Everett Yes, my dog - the lovely Sally (or Scally-wag as I used to call her) - has been gone for twice as long as she was with me. Why does it make you feel uneasy? It’s just different form of training. Dogs and other pets already recognized words and such. The “other stuff” helps model the communication method. Having them communicate when they feel sick or hurt is absolutely part of the end goal, but there needs to be practice in between, and hopefully your pet doesn’t get frequently sick so you have to practice with other activities first. That way, when something does happen, they know the method and it’s easier to teach them concepts like hurt, sick, etc.
