  • The rewilding continues but I also start the journey to understand and execute winter sowing. I want to be able to grow plants from seed and winter sowing seems like a good way to grow certain plants. I think you will find the first portion of this video extremely entertaining as it is was a stretch for me to execute the scenes needed. I will need to continue to work on improving my technique on winter sowing and need your feedback to improve! Additional rewilding episodes are coming!

    Hi Jeff. Discovering a small channel like this is amazing - I've just watched all the previous episodes in a row and wish there were more! Your enthusiasm and knowledge really shines through and I can't wait to see your garden in spring bloom! Love and encouragement from Sweden 🥰

      Arnold - Great to hear from Sweden! It is very encouraging to know you want to watch more videos. Good news, I am working on a couple more. Unfortunately as I have told other people it just takes me so much time to put one of these together. I am getting better and faster at it but still not easy and if I can get more than one published per month thats fast for me. Hopefully Episode 9 will be published within the next week. Thanks for watching all the episodes and leaving a comment, it means a lot to me. Take care!

    I only came across your videos a week ago and I'm intrigued! I'm in the UK and we started our rewilding journey last year, mainly with changing all the plants to native wild plants. We had some success. This year we have replaced all our fences with native hedging, put fruit trees in and are building a pond and wildlife habitats. I can't wait for summer and following your journey. 😁

      Helen - You are doing amazing work!!!!!! All the actions you are taking is going to make a huge difference. I will be interested in hearing how the installation of the pond goes as I wanted to have a water feature install already but hopefully by the end of the summer. I believe water will really bring in the birds. Its early spring and I can already see multiple times the number of butterflies and moths in the garden. I hope you are able to see a similar change so it encourages you to continue. Based on the changes my neighbors are seeing I am hopeful to get others to rewild even small pieces of their yard. Thank you for watching and sharing your story it's always great to hear about other people taking the leap of faith into rewilding. Take care!

I think a "local" coffee shop would be more accommodating but the employee of the Starbucks was very nice I think the manager was concerned having a big bag behind the counter could create a tripping hazard, so I get it. I ended up getting what I needed to try the winter sowing and it was fun to have a little different twist to the story. Thanks again for the idea and am looking forward to winter sowing plants next fall/winter. Take care!

    I meant to add that if you're in the Texas or elsewhere in the Southeast, there is a native seed company in Junction, TX (Native American Seed) with many seed choices. If you'll be ordering more seeds in the future, you might want to check them out. (I'm not affiliated with them.) However, Prairie Moon does have excellent germination information for their various types of native seeds. I hope you have great luck with the seeds you ordered from there!🙂

    Hey there! Really enjoying your rewilding journey! Just a quick thought: it might be worth looking into whether the seeds you're planting require cold stratification. Cold stratification is a process where certain seeds need exposure to cold temperatures to break dormancy and germinate successfully. Essentially, it mimics the natural conditions seeds would experience during winter. This process can vary depending on the type of plant, so it's worth checking to ensure your seeds have the best chance at sprouting! Happy gardening!

    • @Jeffswildlifeadventures

      So glad you are enjoying the rewilding journey! Thank you for leaving a comment. I didn't go into this subject in the video but I did cold stratify some rudbeckia and got them to generate. My biggest issue seems to be getting the plants to grow after the germination. I believe I need to harden and also water more. I will be generating a follow video on this subject in the fall when I attempt more winter sowing. Take care!

    I get a high seeing you converting lawn to native plantings. It’s a beautiful thing!In PA we have the Eastern bluebird that forages on mowed grass. I say that to say, It’s ok to have some mowed area here in our region.
    Did you need to stratify any of the seeds? For butterfly milkweed seeds from last year’s crop I planted in pots and set in our garden and covered with wire mesh and leaves to keep squirrels and birds away. Recently I brought them indoors hoping they start sprouting. So fun tinkering with new ideas. I love your quest for adventure and that you’re making the earth what it was meant to be. Thx. Have you ever bumped a few native Columbine seeds into your hand at a botanical garden? Or taken a few sections of oak leaf hydrangea from an established hedge while waiting for a key repair?Confessions of a guerilla gardener. 🌱😁🌾

    • @Jeffswildlifeadventures
      @Jeffswildlifeadventures  3 месяца назад +1

      "Guerilla Gardener" I like the name. You give me ideas! I tried to stratify cone flowers and some Rudbeckia in the refrigerator but I didn't do something correct as I only got one plant out of lots of seeds. I am going to try and do a hybrid winter sowing next fall and maybe have better results. We have the eastern Blue Bird in our area over the winter and they are beautiful. Seem to be making somewhat of a comeback. I find in my garden I am attracting birds which forage on the ground in leaf litter as an example Carolina Wrens. I agree with you that it is fun to experiment and try new things. I continue to observe and learn from the plants of the earth. Take Care!

    Loved the stealth milk operation! 😆 I don't drink milk, either, and wondered how to get some. I think I'll have to stick to asking the coffee shops because I'm not as brave as you are. Question: Are you in Texas? Or, if you prefer not to say, what zone are you in? This is the first video of yours I've watched, so I don't know whether you've mentioned that in previous videos. I ask because I wondered if you are just starting those additional seeds now (today being March 8th). I've just gotten most of my native seeds recently, but when researching fall/winter planting, I found a post by a native landscaper in Ohio who said after February was too late there. 🤷‍♀ So now I wonder whether I should wait until fall to sow (directly into the beds) or winter to use the milk jug/container method. Looking forward to seeing how it goes with your project!

For the 5 to 10 minutes you see. This is the 8th episode, you may enjoy the first 7. I have left a link to the first episode below. I still have a lot to learn about winter sowing and I believe in the south you need to start late November or December but after January 1st it’s to late. Thanks for watching!!!

    I love your videos
    I started rewilding several years ago, took out grass and planted some natives and hostas
    I also used to use yards and yards of mulch but now I just use leaves. Sometimes I mulch them, other times I just let them lay on the ground
    How much shade bs sun do you have?

    • @Jeffswildlifeadventures
      @Jeffswildlifeadventures  3 месяца назад

      Deborah - Like most yards I have a variety of conditions. Most of the side yard gets morning sun and depending on the location moves to shade by 12:00. The trees I planted 20+ years ago provide an increasing amount of shade and it will be interesting to see how the garden changes as it gets less sun. The front yard is a mix as it faces north. The biggest issue I have with the front yard is a number of locations get afternoon sun which in the Houston area is very hot. It seems like we get a lot less rain than we used to or maybe its just hotter. The one observation I have seen is the condition of the ground under the leaves retains its moisture much longer than the area with grass. I continue to learn so much through the process of rewilding and everything I see and learn says we need to maximize the amount of land we turn back to mother nature. Thanks for watching, having an interest in the project and taking action to improve the land around your home. I am sure the wildlife appreciates your efforts!
