I had a debate with my English teacher last year on how bad English is as a written language, and that many old yet incredibly useful letters were discarded because of European dominance. I also talked about how w and r are technically also vowels sometimes, you should look it up.

Not really. “You” comes from Old English “ēou”, while “þou” comes from OE “þū”. It just so happened þat þe singular/informal “þou” slowly fell out of favor as þe plural/formal “you” took over.

I’m not a linguist historian or anything but I am German and in german “you” (at least informally) is “du” so that would draw a neat line from the common ancestor of “du” in german to “thou” in English to thorn looking like “Y” and turning it into “You”
@@lebendigesgespenst7669, it would, but “þou” and “you” were separate pronouns, which coexisted far before even þe Latin Alphabet. “Þou” is cognate with “du”, while “you” is cognate with “euch”.

It's because the only way to read text was for someone else to write it in ink, with a quill. If you write a thorn quickly you can accidentally flatten the loop a little and it looks like a y

ð can stay dead tbh, unless its purpose changes to something more useful. English isn't a fan of differentiating voiced/unvoiced, and trying to add 2 similar letters at once is much harder than 1 or 2 distinct letters, such as to replace the "sh" sound.
