Thank you for the content. Just a quick query. I am, of course, asking this question purely from the point of view of interest and have no intention of operating equipment beyond the scope of Australian law, and I am, of course asking on behalf of a "friend". That said, what could you possibly recommend in the cheap Chinese handheld genre that will adequately and legally operate on 2 and 70 and have capability in the Australian 477 mhz. UHF CB spectrum?
Hi David, These radios, provided they meet the ACMA's emission limits, found in the Amateur LCD - www.legislation.gov.au/Details/F2019C00750 can be used to transmit in the amateur bands. However on UHF CB, they would be required to be "type approved". Radiocommunications equipment approved for use in Australia has the C-Tick compliance mark, showing that it meets mandatory technical standards set by the ACMA. This does not apply to amateurs as they are authorized to build their own transmitters. www.wia.org.au/licenses/licensing/amateurequipment/
You're clearly not asking if it's legal as HamRadioDX addressed, because obviously it would need to be certified for the UHF CB band. It should work in the 477MHz band. I haven't tried it because I live in the US, but I have *heard* that the UV-5R can transmit in the FRS/GMRS range here in the US. It only states that it can go up to 450MHz, but I believe it can go a little higher and hit the FRS frequencies 462/467MHz. If you were interested in something that had a wide range that could theoretically hit your UHF CB band, I know that the Baofeng BF-F8HP has an advertised UHF range of 400-520MHz and should easily be able to hit 477MHz. I can not give you advice on how clean the output will be at ranges higher than the ham bands, but I think some people do use both the UV-5R and the BF-F8HP for FRS/GMRS without issues. Hopefully that answers your question properly, or at least provides a little additional information.
