- JAPAN vs KOREA | Highlights | Women's VNL 2024. The Japan round of the Volleyball Nations League, "Kaitori Daikichi Volleyball Nations League 2024 Fukuoka Tournament" is being held at the West Japan General Exhibition Center (Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture). Following the men's tournament held from June 4th (Tuesday) to 9th (Sunday), the women's tournament (third week of the preliminary round) has been held since yesterday.
On Wednesday the 12th, the Japan Women's National Team, ranked 6th in the FIVB world rankings (before the start of the match), faced off against South Korea, ranked 38th, and won 3-0 in straight sets (25-16, 25-16, 25-23), bringing their overall record in the tournament to 7 wins and 2 losses.
In the first set, spikes from Ishikawa Mayu, Koga Sarina, and Hayashi Kotona, a service ace from Iwasaki Koyomi, and a block from Araki Sayaka gave Japan a 5-1 lead. Libero Kojima Manami returned the serve accurately, and setter Iwasaki used skillful tossing to score points, giving Japan the advantage in the match. Koga continued to score with blocks and spikes from the middle of the game. Libero Fukudome Satomi also scored points with an under-toss from a difficult position, giving the team momentum, and they continued to play steadily until the end, taking the first set 25-16.
In the second set, Korea also showed various attacks in the early stages, and the game was evenly matched. With increased concentration, Japan's blocks and defenses worked well together, scoring six consecutive points from a score of 5-5, and taking the lead at 11-5. After that, Japan was unable to attack as they wanted against Korea's serve attacks, and the score was caught up to 11-9, but without panicking, Ishikawa and other players calmly spiked and scored points. Furthermore, Iwasaki's service ace and effective serves put Korea at bay, and after that, Ishikawa and Hayashi's powerful spikes gave Japan a large lead of 17-10. Japan's momentum did not stop in the final stages, and a spike from substitute Wada Yukiko and a block from Koga made it 22-14, and then Yamada Nichika scored a toss from Seki Nanami, who was used as a substitute and celebrated her birthday today, and in the end, substitute Inoue Arisa scored a goal to win two sets in a row with a score of 25-16.
In the third set, both teams showed off their strong defensive skills, and in a back-and-forth battle, Korea took the lead at 5-7. At one point they were behind by three points, but Yamada's serve led to consecutive points to tie the score at 10-10, and Iwasaki's block led to a successful comeback. Korea then took the lead at 11-13, but a service ace from Lin tied the score at 16-16 again. They were broken by Korea's serve and were forced into a tough situation at 17-20, but the substitute players came into action. First, Watanabe Aya counterattacked with a broad attack, and Miyabe Airi scored consecutive spikes to tie the score at 20-20, and then Ishikawa's spike finally led to a successful comeback at 21-20. From here, both teams took side outs and the score was tied at 23-23, with neither team giving in. Koga then scored a spike to grab match point, and then he scored a final spike to knock the opponent's return away, taking the third set 25-23 and winning in straight sets.

Japan is too strong for Korea. Korea seem to struggle with every ball and is not on the same level as team Japan. They have a long way to catch up with the rest of other teams.
