CAJON, YOU SAY?
A cajon is a box-shaped percussion instrument from Peru, made from wood and played by striking the front or rear faces with the hands or sticks. It produces a range of sounds, from deep bass to sharp slaps, and is used in various musical styles like flamenco and pop. Often, it has internal snare wires for a buzzing effect, making it popular in acoustic and street performances.

Nice job demonstrating some of the cajon techniques that can provide more options for percussionists who want to emulate drumset patterns and sounds.
Btw the cricket is a classic technique here in Peru when you play peruvian cajon
I was like, WTF, you didn't invent that!
Same here Hahahha
I began playing Cajón in Perú in 1974. I believe the "Cricket", as it is called in this video, was one of the first things I learned to do as a 7 year old. The Cajón is not a replacement for a drum set, although there is certainly some overlap. To approach this instrument in this manner is much like approaching the guitar as a bass guitar. I can certainly see some applications for this specially when performing solos during a show, but not to constantly replace the drum set. It would simply overlook the importance of the Cajón as a unique instrument and its idiophonic qualities. One would also miss out on the Cajón's fundamental purpose, to be used as a syncopation rhythm compliment to other instruments in the band.
That is so cool... I’m a drummer and woodworker and this is a great way to blend the two disciplines
With my respect, humility is always a good thing. What you call "cricket" is a very old trick that we use in Spain and quite sure in Peru too, long before you played a cajon for the first time. As I believe, you are living in L.A. so you probably know Diego Alvarez "El Negro". He know very well the tradition and all about old school and modern cajon. A little more respect for the Maestros. Best Regards
Maybe she discovered this technique without knowing that someone did before her. That has nothing to do with missing respect, friendo.
@@THX-vp9fz you're right that to give her a benefit of the doubt, perhaps she didn't know that it is a very old technique.... in which case, she is naive AND presumptioius that anyone as young and seemingly inexperienced as that could actually "invent" something.....a better wording that could have used would have been that she "discovered" or "realized that there is this cool technique."......HOWEVER, That aside, I don't understand your reason for assuming that Juan Carlos Melian is giving her a "Macho attitude". AND even if he were, perhaps to suggest that he change that notion is more effective.....Additionally, if anything her assumption that "she" invented that technique is what White people have done repeatedly in the West.... take something that BIPOC have done for a long, LONG time and then say "I discovered this" and "I claim ownership over this idea"...
Just bought a cajon and already using her technique, adds so much to my playing so thank you Mona Tavakoli!!
As a musicteacher I am looking for ways to get the size and the volume down in my music room. This talk helps me a lot. Thanks to all you guys and girls out there sharing your playing sessions with us :-)
If you guys really want to know about “the cricket” check the Gome drummers of Ghana. The Cajon like almost every Latin drum/percussion has its roots in Africa, simple.
This video is back!! Love her playing and personality.
Mona is just THE BOMB. Just exudes joy and happiness and is a killer percussionist and drummer.
I saw her live on a Jason Mraz tour and she was a STAR.
I've been doing what you call the cricket since before you were born!
Nice one! Thanks for sharing this Cajon perspective as a drumset. Love it!
Great job showing how diverse the sounds on a cajon can be!
Both of these artists have a tremendous amount of musicality. Love the grooves and feels and Mona demonstrated some innovative Cajon playing. Love the "cricket". Great work !!!!
a particular tone i started doing on cajon is hitting the sides of the cajon with my knuckles to have a different timbre. Depends on the cajon but trying and see what you think
Very good, but the real question is:
Can you use a Drumset as a Cajon?
Jamieus Rowlando Loota Percussion
I bet Steve Gadd could.
That first slap on the cajon sounded like a legit snare drum honestly
A nerdish remark: When you play traditional grip with both hands at the same time, you play matched grip.
It's hard to argue with that.
Wait, where was the jam at the end?!
This is great, but you didn't invent the"cricket"... Spanish and Peruvian percussionist have been using it for a really long time. Those interested check out "Ojos de Brujo" to hear examples...
Indeed. :-)
True I guess. But re-Invented and called it "cricket". like Eddie VanHalen with Hammer-ons..
I assume she has never heard anyone else do it,hence her statement of "I think,I created it,"and calling it something different.
Thanks for make that very clear, a lot of cajon players (including myself) use that a lot . So sorry Mona.
True. My dad does it all the time but he actually uses his elbow in some weird way.
Hi guys.. You have to watch more flamenco videos... It's God level playing cajon
That what I was looking for with cajon.
Not just play with your hands but with feet to create new sound.
A bit like how you would add drum taps when playing guitar.
master doing things they are master of :D
That cajon setup is awesome. It’d be fun to play that at quieter gigs.
They sound awesome at small venues. I first heard a dude playing one in Tennessee and swore it was an actual kit.
Sheilla E still rule the percussion section for woman. She also is beast on the drums
Best Cajon ive seen
Just bought a nice cajon....thank you so much for the info.....will be on my next EP for sure....love the lesson....Renzo J.
Now that was cool... Very nice!!
Awesome sound awesome stuff. Oh by the way... I've noticed these in the music store and wondered what the Hell is it? Now I know... Nice demo. Thanks for this.
Mona rooooooccccckkkkssss!!!!!!…And she is a Tavakoli!! !…😜😊🔥🤘😎
She 's pretty dope with that Cajon.
thanks for the cricket trick ! ^^
This was nice. Thanks for sharing!
Kamal Bensra
Mindblowing right there
I was waiting for that jam to happen
But what if I don't want to play the cajon, dude?
Dude
dude
But dude
@@PayneKrunk dude
Dudeeeeeeeeeeee
Proud of you as a Persian girl
Wow, just wow!
Excellent cajon work.
I've gotten lazy in my old age and added a kick pedal.
Hi Paullus, what kick pedal are you using or would you recommend?
Adding a kick pedal makes playing the cajon more like a drum set
You use your regular drum pedal with and extension that goes to the cajon like a double bass pedal
Google cajon pedal
Wow that is so sick
Love this! Mona: What cajon are you playing, please?
That was very cool
Cajón sounds amazing! Perfectly tuned!
Very very cool!
Any idea what cajon she plays
and how that is miked which seems to free up how and what is possible
Thanks
Or suggest a quality cajon
the guy looks like ned from spider-man grew up and picked up drums
A talented Iranian girl 👊🏾🤘🏾
Mona Tavakoli you are awesome, nice creativity on playing Cajon 👍🏻
Which cajon is this? Sounds great! Thanks in advance
first of all Mona is great at what she does second of all she is easy on the eyes...beautiful woman ..and she plays percussion!!! now thats a plus!!
Have no idea how I got here, pretty cool though. And, I like here 😍
I am calling the pitch bend the cricket from now on..love it will be fun when I tell my band I am doing the cricket on the next fill... 🍄🤭
woah, that cricket leg was very cool and smart
Excellent.
Your Cricket is actually played by any serious guys playing Cajon in the world .
That is a very known technique used by Peruvians for decades now. I have seen it been played several times. I wonder if she thinks the cajon is a new instrument, how can she claim she invented that technique?
@@romiantuesta-vilca7635 Yes you are right, but she is not reading these comments
I think she said that comment tounge firmly in cheek.
That’s pretty cool, nice vid, but she definitely didn’t invent doing that. African musicians have been using that technique for centuries
William Angliss
Indian/Pakistanis do that as well even the most basic, the Tabla is played that way to get its definitive sound...
William Angliss - I agree with you this is a cool video AND that she definitely DID NOT invent that....and in fact it is quite a statement of some sort of privilege for her to put out that SHE could have invented it.....it's what White musicians and artists have been doing for centuries....saying "I created that!" when they are copying or mimicking what is already here.....and she seems to be a fairly advanced cajon player and you would think that she has heard a great number of good cajon performers who hadn't seen her perform and are doing that technique..... so it doesn't make sense that she is claiming. It is a very odd position. Hopefully, she'll listen to the comments here and below indicating surprise at her assertion and realize her mistake. And I can only hope that it was a misstatement.
It seems to have been around for a long time. Very little is in fact new. Haha. A few comments are highlighting the same thing. 😁
@@othaday54 #1She said she thinks she did, which may indicate she has never heard anyone else do it. #2 She's not white.
It is a Peruvian invention, search in google Peruvian cajon
Mona you’re very good!
She’s awesome
Wow nice tip on how to do the toms.,
She invented the cricket? I guess almost every Cajón player does this.
exactly... i was like..huh?
she said she think 🤔, not exactly
lol I've been playing "the cricket" for ages and today it's the first time I saw this video... as you said, many Cájonplayers do that.
ur all wrong. Maybe she discovered this technique without knowing that someone did before her. Trolls... smh
@@THX-vp9fz trolls because they see a flaw in her assertion? and are pointing it out gently? Perhaps YOU are the troll here and not engaging in a discussion?
This is very cool :)))
Extraordinary
After a long time found a channel to learn about clapbox
Thanks mam 🙏
very very cool!!!
Too cool!!
It’s love at first sight
I always see her differently everytime she shows her skill. 1:23 here again i can tell shes talking to that guy in a subtle way
Hey Mona your bloody awesome 🙂
WOWOW❤️❤️❤️❤️
Amazing cool...👍
Awesome
She flipped me off Bro u Kno what that means 💯
She is from raining jane right??
May have coined the term cricket and its very fitting, but didn’t come up with the move. Been seein that move for 12 years. Still appreciate her talents
This woman rocks. Just shows how little you need to create a multitude of sounds.
Very cool.
I got fever and the only thing that will help it is more cajon!!
Are jhs pp Cajon any good?!
The 'Cricket', outta SIGHT!
I don't care what she invented but she sound and look good in that thing
I love her.
Cool!
fresh!
I like her cajon
She is my love 😍
She's fun
African ( Black ) musicians have been using that technique for centuries
Nice, but what is the advatange to a normal Drumkit which is easy to learn?
certain types of venus or gigs. For example I used to do percusion for a small youth group setting at church. A Cajon was perfect for the small acoustic setting
Less cost, better transportability, closer content to busking, better fitting to unplugged sessions/gigs, ... want more?
WOW!!!!
She is definitely cute and fun to be with. Always pure joy hearing real drums and percussion
oh yeah, on the tambo.
cool
It is a Peruvian invention
COOL
"The cricket " and she pointed ...
And my guess was wrong.
cool stuff from amsterdam.
Well Watch TRILOK GURTU. If that was her invention cricket. He is doing that from many years now.👍🙏
That cricket move is sick!!! She’s awesome.
More cricket!!!
Where’s the jam?
