This type of design is made traditionally in Japan, however it is not katana, since it is not steel, and its not bokken or bokuto. This would be considered "tsunagi". The purpose of tsunagi is to replicate the general blade shape so the koshirae can be stored/displayed without the actual blade. This was typically only found in the highest ranks of samurai, as they would be the only ones who could afford or require more than one set of koshirae. If you go to a Japanese museum and see swords displayed on a kake with koshirae on top and blade on bottom, a tsunagi is inside the koshirae holding everything together for display.
Great job on making such a beautiful bokuto. If you make another one, I recommend using the small hand plane and spokeshave more to assist with those curved sections.
Huge fan of this video and I skipped bits and pieces to intentionally save this for when I can afford my own shop/materials. AMAZING details and instructional/comedical guidance. You sir made a masterpiece that most people will never have the honor/pleasure of knowing. I wish I had a friend as dedicated/thoughtful as you. You honor the way of Bushido, I respect that very much as a Ronin. I'm a very old soul and do not fit in with the world today. Your video made me feel at home and gave me hope. It meant so much to just watch bits and seconds not to spoil what will be an amazing future accomplishment for me when I set out to create my own copy of the sword you made in this video/make it my own! Thank you sincerely Mr.Lowery (Dan), I was having trouble with my ADHD/Depression/OCD/etc etc etc etc. As a swordsman who cannot afford his blades anymore and wants to go back to basics, I really want this to be my next future project/goal as soon as am able.m Thanks again man, I look forward to more videos (without trying to sneak peaks until I can make stuff myself too haha). I watched the first I wanna say 3 minutes or so? Before realizing," OH SNAP I LOVE THIS, THIS DUDE IS DOING AN AWESOME JOB EXPLAINING EVERYTHING IN GREAT DETAILS I GOTTA TRY THIS!" lol - just a little trip inside my my mind/thoughts. You have a new fan in my sir ^_^ Arigato, Yoroshiku onigaishimasu :)
@DanLowery I'm not there yet but when I am, you will be the first person I want to send my progress to privately :) I also honor the way of Miyamoto Musashi aka his other names and moniker lol. I actually live my life the exact same way he did, without realizing it until last year :)
Well done 👍🏻 For a minute i was worried about the handled wrapping but it's good luckily Also the sheet is cool, finally someone made a full wooden katana with the sheet
this is awesome do you have any more specifications of the sycamore you used like the length and thickness, also the templates are a bit confusing with there being 3 different sizes are they the sheathe? thanks
That's the one of the best katana, I have ever seen.... I literally love your katana artwork ❤ By the way If I were to buy this same katana from you ..... What would be your best price??
For your friend i would be clear about waste side and what side to be close to on. You can shape with a sander not just go to a line the use a router. Also if you don't know the value of a sharp chisel im sure they could get better learning sorce elsewhere.
I love it, it's beautiful piece of art but you for got the pins in the handle and it mightve prevented the epoxy in the handle. And the little art pieces under the wrap in the handle. But no hate just a katana lover ❤ great job man
I nearly clicked off after you started cutting the template, so many videos claim to be forging the katana when they just cut it out of metal and or machine it and sharpen it with no forging to be found anywhere in the video, i forgot the sword was being made out of wood and you never claimed to be forging
Watching the process out of wood, spectacular! I have watched a number of videos on steel and metal, but this was satisfying to watch. Well done!

I think your ito wrapping is twisted the wrong way but gives it a whole new look so pretty nice 👌
Not wrong if it looks right!

Bravo complimenti per l opera realistica spada Nippo
Really cool video and great work, but my heart sank a bit when you finished it off by epoxying the tsuka instead of pegging it with a mekugi.
What a piece of art 👍👍 so beautiful. 👍👍

Your cool and smart thanks❤
Sir could u make a katana for me
N send it over
Nice
Bro can u give us a more information like the thickness and the long of the plank that u use and some like templates please?
I added the link to the template I used in the video description. The blade is about 3/8" thick and the overall sword is about 40"
@@DanLowery thank u bro u really helped me
I love it, it's beautiful piece of art but you for got the pins in the handle and it mightve prevented the epoxy in the handle. And the little art pieces under the wrap in the handle. But no hate just a katana lover ❤ great job man
You only need mekugi (wooden pins) to hold the nakago (tang) to the tsuka (handle). Bokken being one solid piece do not require mekugi
Very nice. Any reason why you chose to epoxy the Tsuka instead of pinning it like it's traditionally done?
I decided at the last minute to just use epoxy because I didn't want to mess up drilling a hole in the tsuka after all that work lol
How much for you to make me a rengoku katana
how to bay the same kattana
i relly want to do that but i dont have tools to do that :(

do you sell these?
Sorry, I don't.

How much is the price
