- This is my home built Super 8 / Regular 8 scanner.
Almost everything is 3D printed. Controlled by arduino and Raspberry Pi and stepper motors.
New improved version of T-Scann8 2021

Now THIS is the BEST DIY digitizer I've seen!
The build has the things that are a must.
The rubber pinch rollers to move the film instead of toothed sprocket IS A MUST! Excellent!
The RGB light source is also a must. This is the only one I've seen that implemented that.
So well done!
Thanks!. I don't use RGB anymore, white light is better. Feel free to watch my other videos about T-Scann8.
This looks awesome! I've been looking to build something like this. Can't wait to see what improvements you make. And hopefully provide the designs for this! Or even offer builds for sale!
Love this! Looking forward to the build description!
Best followers today, October 16, it's been 1 year since I published my video on my super 8 / regular 8 scanner. Now this project has been viewed 3895 times and 49 followers.
This project started in May 2015 with me wanting to build a scanner with a USB microscope camera worked but did not work well, it took a long time before I came to the conclusion that Rasbberry PI computer and its camera was the best solution. During the trip, I learned both Arduino programming and CAD for 3D printers. Now I have updated the film gate, and changed from red laser to blue LED to detect the film perforation. Will also improve film feed. As well as software control scanning. Sorry it took so such a long time, hope to publish a new video before New Year. Then I will make a project page and tell you about how you build your own scanner with 3d files and everything. / Torulf Holmström Stockholm Sweden
Thank you for the update.
I have been looking for such a project for a long, long time. I tried building one myself a few times, but i got stuck at film perforation detection and the light source.
Hopefully you will be able to find time to create a project page with the files, so I and others can digitize my box of old super 8 movies and relive some lost memories.
Thank you so much! I think we are a lot waiting for your project page! Great job
Helt otroligt !!!
@@HenkeHolmqvist Tack!
Otroligt bra kvalitet!! Gratulerar till ett fantastiskt jobb!!!!!
Wow. amazing work, Looking forward to seeing your 3D Files, ect. You should actually sell this, even if you make the components/3D prints open source and sharable.
Very clever build and the quality looks great! And as others have said you could sell these! Cheers
I'm also going to make a scanner. This is the best project I've found. Please provide a detailed description.
Very impressive! Congratulations!
Looking forward to your plans so I can build this
That's actually pretty good quality for that little camera module! There's now a high quality 12 megapixel module available for the Raspberry PI, which would probably give amazing results for this.
Have you seen me updated to the HQ camera?
Fantastic work! I’m building something very similar but I was having issues with the take up reel. I’m going to do what you have done which is a great idea.
Thanks !
-Exquisitely made scanner and very educational vid! Tip: There are some polymer coated wheels available for cine dust extraction, instead of your DIY electrical tape version.
Keep up the good work and keep'em vids coming, man! Cheers, DIYSwede
"coated wheels available for cine dust extraction" such as BlackMadgic uses on its scanner?
Nice Project!
With this approach you could scan your 15meters super 8 films in 1 hour and 30 minutes
every single frame is long 4.01mm, divide 15000mm by 4.01mm and you obtain about 3740 frames
you can scan it in a framerate of 41 frames per minute, so dividing 3740 frames by 41 and you obtain 1hour and 30 minutes
not bad at all! :)
I think this is the best project that I found on youtube. That approach is not bad at all!
Thanks! Has actually increased the scanner speed a bit more, 64 images per minute. When I have made some other changes, I will make a new video on my scanner.
amazing dedication!
Thanks!
Just wow!!
These are some really good results. A few simple improvements to this might be using a high quality reference light source, and a different camera module with a higher native resolution. the microscope lens is a solid idea though.
Thanks!, Change camera to High Quality Camera, you can do but requires some reconstruction and possibly change the microscope lens
Great result. You should market it.
it will probably be a lot of work to make a commercial product
Hi Torulf. Excellent project. You seem to have nailed most problems. While you are improving and (Hopefully) documenting your telecine, is there anyway you could share more photos/videos of the whole assembly? Many thanks and keep-up the good work!
Thanks! yes it will be a project page with pictures etc.
I'm not a techie, but I'm definitely interested in purchasing one.
Sorry but don't build and sell, you have to build yourself. Maybe you know someone who can help you?
Wow, häftigt :)
Tack Robert
Thanks for all the comments !. Sorry for some late answers should improve me in the future
Looking forward for the stl files
Hope i can build one myself
👍🏻
All you need is to build your own Scanner
tscann8.torulf.com/
That is great. Do you have the plans for building to give to us (especially me!) because I have no idea how to program that. I recently found all my films again in storage and now I want to scan most of them. Great project. Great footage. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you !, I will share all STL files, programs, pcb and everything for you and others to be able to build your own scanner.
Wonderful work! Did you have any plans to share your build? Especial the software part (e.g. via GitHub).
Personally i plan/build a very similar scanner. My plan is to use a Ardoino motor-shield with GRBL and an Raspi with OpenCV.
First I will develop it further, then I will share this construction
Nice design, have you tried scanning any negative stock using this? Wondering how well the colours came through for inversion?
The reason I ask about the colours is because I have a wolverine and I tend to struggle with getting enough blue information through to do a good inversion of the colours.
Have not tried to scan neg film, think it would work and is no problem to turn the image into pos film
Hi!
Great project!
Does your program work with one motor nema 17 with arduino uno module?
yes you can use UNO, but then you have to make your own pcb
Hej Torulf, fint bygge, otroligt stabil bild! Lite frågor;
Tack!
Hej Johan tack!
Helt otrolig kvalitet. Vad kostade scannern? H. Stig Österberg från Dalsbruk (Södra Finland)
Tack! Kostade nånstans runt 2000 kr i delar att bygga gissningsvis.
great job! will you build on request.
Thanks! / Unfortunately you have to build it yourself tscann8.torulf.com/
Hi Great project, trying to build one myself, which lens do you use (microscope lens).
For the V2 camera and the update with the HQ camera, I use this

@@tscann8 Thanks for replying, will check it out.
Hi,
First, congratulation for that !
This is exactly what I want to make.
Do you have the stl files of the plastic pieces ?
Do you have publish your work on a website ? Github ?
Thanks for your shares :-)
Hi
Thanks! I'm in the process of redesigning the movie gate including laser sensing, so not ready to share yet
has not distributed any stl or building description yet
@@torulfholmstrom957 thanks for your answer. I am looking forward to discovering your work !
I really like what you have achieved here Torulf, can you please tell me the costing for everything, look forward to seeing the build page. All the best.
Thank you !, It has cost around 2000 Swedish kronor.
@@tscann8 Wow! Excellent that works out at around £172.00 GB pounds here, I use the Wolverine 720p film scanner, your build really caught my eye, I really hope that you may offer to sell versions of this as I would consider commissioning you to build one for me.
@@OpticNerveProductions Well, will not build and sell, but will make construction instructions, so you and others can build yourself.
@@tscann8 ok thank you, all the best and thanks for replying to my messages.
great! what do you think about wetgate?
Wetgate has been looking and thinking about it, maybe I'll make one for my scanner in the future.
Nice, I was looking for such kind of machine, do you have more detailed information?
Thanks! The design is currently being updated. There will be a new video when it is finished with more details
@@tscann8 awesome, subbed!
Can you publish details about the microscope lens please?

Do you have instructions or stl files?
No, I'm in the process of redesigning the movie gate including laser sensing, so not ready to share yet
has not distributed any stl or building description yet
Should try upgrading the camera to new HQ camera that's available now for Raspberry Pi!
Do not know if I can use the lens I have now, then there will be a change in distance from the film plant to the lens. So have not investigated how much it affects purely mechanically. Right now I am changing laser detection and film gate, then I will think about a possible better camera
@@tscann8 Cool. The new camera has a built in c mount so should be pretty straight forward. Look forward to seeing STL files etc.
@@Bassquake76 Have you seen me updated to the HQ camera?
@@tscann8 Are you referring to the newer video? Yes I just had a look. Seems the camera is still a v2 though or is the title and image wrong in the video? ruclips.net/video/Re8KhnXMi3U/видео.html

I drew the path to the folder, but when I press start scan, a message constantly pops up “Please fdefine folder name before scanning…
Have you named your USB stick or hard drive to "SMALFILM"? (if you haven't changed the code) then type in "Sweden2018" for example in the user interface.
I am working on the same project. However I never intend to reverse the direction of bend as all scanners , including yours do. With a very old film it could break. I will also not use a claw transport but a large sprocket wheel so the transport load is spread over many frames. The frame transport will also not be sudden but a slow acceleration and deceleration
Interesting! Feel free to tell me once you have posted the RUclips video on your project
WOW did you sell it?
Thanks! no don't sell. In the process of redoing the filmgate, then I will share 3d files. So you can build one yourself
In Hollywood they call this a "telecine".
(Google Traduttore)
Hi do not sell, in the future I will publish construction description on it. Is improving laser detection of film perforation.
Saluti

I do not sell, you have to build yourself. Here is the construction description. tscann8.torulf.com
Hello, I am interested in this scanner, I would like more details. All contacts are made with the help of ggoogle translat, as I only speak Portuguese

Like to know if you plan to sell this scanner ?
No no plans to sell it.
@@tscann8 There's a good market here in America. Could help sell here. I see your in Sweden. Could make here and save import hassles. Retail $499 ?
@@ThePhilippineconnect It will be developed more, it will probably be a lot of work to make a commercial product and there are competitors Wolverine 8mm and Super 8 for example.
