Che meraviglia sentire questo repertorio nella sua lingua originale e con questa linea, pienezza, nobiltà che non è mai troppo austera e distaccata,ma sempre umana..
A pity that Siepi rarely ventured outside the Italian repertoire, unlike his Met colleague Jerome Hines. Because his native language was Italian, he wound up being typecast. He did sing some French roles (Mephisto in Faust was pretty much "it" though) and the German roles he sang were Gurnemanz and Don Fernando (in Fidelio). However, he did sing French art songs and German lieder. As the above excerpt will attest, his German was nearly flawless. As was his French.
My father was lucky enough hearing him live. Siepi was not a tall man, rather of normal size or even short, as my father said. But what a voice! As a partisan, he spent some years of the Mussolini era in my homecountry, Switzerland.
Siepi was short? He was about 6 feet 1 inch tall. It's much more than "normal size or even short". He was not very tall (if not say gigantic) as Hines or Talvella, but he was much above average.
@@boristemkin Yes, thank you, you are most probably right. I personally never have seen Siepi alive, and I think my father mistook him for someone else. It's a long time ago. On videos one obviously can see that Siepi was not a short but rather tall man ... 😅
Dear immerallesbesserwisser Yes, thank you for that correction. On the photos, Siepi doesn't look short neither. Probably my father confounded him with someone else. How do I envy you having been close to him! May I ask you what were the occasions? Best regards, A. von Uri
Proof Wagner can be sung beautifully. Such gravitas and befittingly somber

I was fortunate to hear his Don Giovanni in 1980 at the San Francisco Opera... Unforgettable!!!!
