Seems like this was an absolute gift for the Kremlin. I bet they couldn't believe their luck. Such a terrific opportunity to "widen the repressions" as you put it in a way that looks like it had nothing to do with the Kremlin. Meaning they were able to turn the screw much more in one go than they've generally been able to.
Long term, isn’t this good though? Forcing the elites to endure repression like (but not like) the common person seems like it does nothing but turn more people away from the regime.
Vlad, I can relate very much to this. I grew up in Budapest, Hungary, in the 80s I was a teen, related to the "cultural elite" the one or the other way. We had the rule of the communist regime breaking up in those times, and similar parties were happening. I felt at that time, it was always a test of boundaries - politically, and personally at the same time as well. Many of these were known and accepted by "the regime", and on a few occasions, the socialist regime decided to crack down on it to demonstrate power. We always felt to be on the winner side - at the same time, cultural and artist people are sensitive, and also want to survive, and this creates ambiguities hard to deal with. Including those who were playing the role of cracking down. Thank you for sharing.
Reminds me of that Hungarian ultra conservative (neo-nazi, if we're being honest here) MEP, that was caught at a gay orgy in Brussels and had to climb down a rain gutter to save his naked ass from being found out? He was also married to a high ranking female conservative judge. Next day, that guy was doubling down on the anti LGBT rhetoric. 😂
Have you seen the coverage of the Iranian man dancing, then others dancing and posting it online? Just dancing. The authorities are enraged by this movement of joy.
The current reality of this war is that outsiders are sitting by and watching an entire country bleed itself to death, and take a good proportion of its neighbour with it to indulge the insane ideas of its psychopathic leader... It really is pathetic when you see it in real terms.
It took a while for me to be sure whether "Almost Naked" was the description of a social event, or the name of an organization that runs candidates for office.
Stephen Kotkin, in an interview a while back with the New Yorker magazine, noted that Russia continues to be shaped by very persistent long term forces. The tendency towards autocracy is one thing, but this party's ethos and the indulgent self-entitlement of the party-goers here at the end of 2023, with hundreds of their countrymen dying or being maimed daily is oddly reminiscent of the attitudes of the nobility in 1916-1917 with their similar indifference to their soldiers.
At least in World War I several Grand Dukes, including Michael (brother of the Tsar) fought and were in the trenches, and Prince Olge Konstantinovich (son of Grand Duke Constantine) died of wounds received in combat. Today's oligarchs have all their sons far away from the front and some even in the Western Europe they hate so much.
A good point. The longer the war goes on and Russian losses grow, the people might just come out of their apolitical slumbers. The elite’s indifference and determination not to get involved might just be their downfall. We can hope
@JS-ip8xm Tell us where the sons of Ukrainian oligarchs and politicians are fighting, when Zelensky is going to forcibly mobilize another half a million ordinary citizens
There are scenes from The Boys & Man in the High Castle which depict authoritarians partying the same way as this nude party. It's not to depict indulgence as morally bad but to point out the hypocrisy of the authoritarian state, what the authoritarian state can get away with, & what they can rub our nose in. They know that we know what they can get away with. And they derive even more pleasure from it.
Beautiful insights on how to balance freedom of expression with responsibility for others (PS thanks for guiding us as a community this year, certain it will help many both now and in the future stand up to tyranny as it arises)
Best wishes to you Vlad. I hope you are managing to maintain your strength. Bless you for your many dimensional talks. You make them simple enough for someone primitive as I am to understand.
One of the characteristics of cults is that the cult-leader can regulate the sexuality of his followers while allowing himself complete sexual liberty. If Putin had been a model of chastity, himself, I would simply see this as attempting to establish a certain value system, which would be controversial in itself, but not as much as the reality: this isn't about morality at all, but control.
@@DoloresJNurss What you wrote makes little sense, in fact it could be shortened to “I don’t trust Putin, no matter what he says.” Since Putin is not a model of chastity (in your eyes either).
@@EvgeniyYakushev-m2u No, that is not an accurate statement of what I said. The issue isn't chastity per se. The issue is that a hallmark of cult leaders is to hold one standard of chastity for others and a completely different one for themselves. The standards aren't the issue--the inconsistency is, and the power to induce one's followers to ignore the glaring difference, in such an intimate matter. I've had friends who fell to cults and I've put a lot of study, over the years, into how cults work. This is one of the big red flags.
Vlad, I came to really appreciate your insights and often feel we became friends. Let me wish you a happy holiday season. Thank you so much for what you are doing. This is precious to me.
Often times, oppresion is about envy as much as its about moral outrage. A lot of those who are outraged secretly wish they were invited and could attend.
There was a spat of claimed Kyiv parties by Russian propaganda a few months back, which showed honestly just normal good nights in a good club anywhere in the west, that then claimed how they can party if they were being bombed. First half of them was pre 2022 footage anyway and the second half was easily dismissed as why shouldn't you have fun when you can in otherwise adverse conditions, UK had some many good shindigs when they could during WW2. The interesting thing about the reaction to this Russian party is just so stupid, to be honest I've been to some undergrad parties at uni and in rural Australia with less expensive socks and outfits but similar amounts of nudity and 2 decades ago. It's tacky but harmless as long as everyone is consenting. Also if you go to a designated nude beach and get nude you aren't breaking laws or disturbing society, and that applies to any private party. The difficulty of the videos for the regime of Russia is for its ability to mobilise elites into their favour. This is built on the ability to let elites do what they want a get protected for loyalty. This spans from the truly awful and criminal (fraud, extortion, sexual trafficking, pedophilia) to the morally fine but frowned upon in Russia (this type of hedonism, LGBT). This is precarious and this event is par of the Putin regime having to force an austere puritanical regime now to go with his mainstreaming of fascism.
Was there a war in Australia 20 years ago too? You yourself admit that the party is as tasteless as possible and the population could have turned a blind eye to it, if not for the initially arrogant comments of these “stars”. This is just a “reality check” for some individuals. Regular parties are still held in Russia and Ukraine.
@@EvgeniyYakushev-m2u This is my point really, there is nothing particularly special about the party, it could have happened 3 years ago in the middle of Covid and nobody important in Russia would give a shit about it. Unlike in the West at the time where it would be a huge scandal. But now the regime has to crack down on conspicuous "elites" to keep the broader population onside. It's actually much more of a political tightrope Putin is walking here than it seems on the surface.
"UK had some many good shindigs when they could during WW2." I've seen a video by Jabzy where he talks about that there was a kind of a sexual liberation during the Blitz in the UK, though that didn't last. For comparison, my country (Finland) had a ban on dances during the years 1939-44 (partially continued until 1948) just because it was thought that it would be unfair for people back home to have such fun while others are dying on the frontlines. Some exceptions were made, e.g. weddings. People also had secret illegal dance parties.
How are we supposed to make any sense of this? Not just this trifling event but this Russia altogether. Does anyone in Russia just lie all day everyday about everything? That is the impression I get from every story coming out of Russia for years now. With one exception recently, Ms Duntsova.
I was having anxiety attacks for a few days. Binging this channel helped me get thru it more easily. Not because Vlad sedates - far from it. Rather - he *calms*.
Thanks for vid Vlad, but I gotta add some context, First, moscow's/st. petersburg nightlife has a tradition of being wild, and actual kink parties are(were?) a thing. Second, this contrasts wildly with experience of common russians as it has always been. Third, this party was not some actual cutting edge party, many of the involved (such as kirkorov or lolita) are aging stars of perestroika era, who owe their career to elderly audience and state TV events such as new year's show, Sobchak being less of an old guard but somewhere in between, and Ivleeva while being newer is going out of fashion for several years already, what I'm saying is that these are artists of vastly different generations, it's almost as weird as if Frank Sinatra, Paris Hilton and Weeknd happened to be in the same room while being dressed funny for some reason. Hence the poor taste/eclectic format. Fourth, these people generally intended to outwait/outmaneuver whole war inconvenience, their consensus can be summed up as "play safe/enjoy it while it lasts" while maintaining some sort of independence from state. Fifth, and most important, "elites" are not popular in russia, moscow is not popular, hate for whatever they see on tv is a normal reaction for average russian. All of these are ingredients for creating perfectly acceptable target for public hatred. So the state's play here is very simple: with one hand it sends the message to ordinary people "look THIS decadence and immorality is what we are fighting against" so that ordinary guy can feel their moral superiority once again, exploiting anti-elite sentiment. With another hand it sends the message to these "stars": "Thought yourself independent? Thought you can pay lip service to our project? You need us, because without us THEY will tear you apart, and if you still believe you got their love go read online comments" So in in one fell swoop kremlin lets out some steam of war and uncertainty discontent safely and reminds the elites how short their leash is.
The Online Comments. main point. i think they are all new AI bot farm. like big brother watching. rolling out for test as social experiment. no proofs. technically possible
you forgot the main reason why all this happened: one simple soldier recorded very angry video that made Putin shake with fear ) Hence the repressions.
The comment is generally correct, except that the negativity began to rise from the bottom, not from the top. The sequence of events was approximately this: a party, photo posts on social networks, popular outrage (but quite moderate), statements from the “stars” in the spirit of “Sorry, we are not sorry,” a serious wave of rage, reaction from the government.
I saw those pics; super interested to 1. Learn what the Z-rad response has been - though I imagine it's fairly predictable - but more so to hear Mr Vexler's comments.
It does distinctively look like that. Now the Putin’s junta requires everyone, including previously untouchable celebrities, to actively and publicly support “traditional” Soviet values.
I love this informal format Vlad. Glad for the opportunity to get your special kind of understanding on social/political extremes and this was a good one to talk about. As you said, many of our present political wood-be's are driven by questionable values that have nothing to do with the good practices that a society needs for cohesion, growth and sustainability. Hoping for you and our community, a continued very open dialog on what we can do personally and politically to make 2024 hopeful as well.
In my opinion the worst aspect of this party is not what they were wearing or should I say not wearing...but the glaring insensitivity to the soldiers and their families that are suffering this holiday season. Some of the military wives have had enough and are protesting the repeated deployments 😥 very unfair to keep re-using the same soldiers with no time off.
I have an old friend whose main academic interests are related to feminism. One of her side projects is tracking the movements of Russian "models" via their social media and then seeing how this correlates with the movements of oligarchs... For example apparently in the 18 months before the war quite a lot of these "ladies" decamped to SE Asia and at the same time a number of oligarchs bought property out there. Anyway the point is that according to her this party was pretty tame by the standards of Moscow hedonism and that participants had previously been seen at far more racy events even in th last year. Something was different about this and it will be interesting to find out what.
I mean I think I know why. As wild animals, young humans wiuld be required to comprehend and in the worst case scenario even practice violence LONG before they'd have to do the same for sex. That's at least one reason. Parents subconsciously think that they can't or that there is no point in protecting children from seeing and understand violence whereas they do with sex. ... also there's the modern communication technology that let's us all be aware of the prevalence of pedophilia and also exaggerates it further which freaks us out even more. And yes, all of this is driven by parents intention to teach or not teach their kids things.
I couldn't count the number of events I've attended that had a clothes check and all attendees were completely naked. Maybe that's why I feel like Nomad, "Non-sequitur. Your facts are uncoordinated."
Thanks for Xmas and New Year's wishes Vlad. Same back to you! This is hilarious but in a sense chilling. Putin now has an opportunity to go full Stalin.
Thank you the well wishes Vlad. I hope you had a nice relaxing holiday without issues or flares. Gentle hugs from Hawaii. I wonder if that sock fit? Kidding aside, Great vlog as always. 🧡
In WWII and even Vietnam, you saw celebrities showing up at the front lines to entertain the troops or showing up at Canteens. There might have been "naked parties" but they didn't invite the press to take photos. What a bunch of doofuses!
One thing have noticed about war is that it not only radicalises those involved in it, but their societies and cultures, too, and part of that is the kind of mortal panics over this, or over Janet Jackson's Super Bowl nip-slip during the half-time show for the 2006 one during the Iraq War, and while those are unintentionally funny, those reactions reflect that radicalisation and how it puts people on edge to go absolutely bananas over anything, I think.
Both of these examples refer to the aggressor in unjustified wars. I think that the opposite seems to be happening in Ukraine: more tolerance & generosity; a greater feeling of unity & national pride; a stronger pushback to corruption.
Sounds like the 70s in Washington, DC. I mean literally. I went to pick up a date to one party, she was a beautiful blonde, for an "elegant" party. She was wearing a floor length black see-through dress with black bra and panties and black spike heels. It was all topped off with a fashionable black belt. All the solid black items we of a type of velvet. It was stunning. The party was great as well. Ah, the good old days. Good thing there were no camera phones, or social media, back then. That was, by the way, one of the tamer of such events I recall.
It was fascinating to see how Vladimir Solovyov linked the party to the sinking of the Novocherkassk. I didn't quite understand how he made the connection, but I'm sure his main purpose was to deflect his viewers' concerns away from Russia's setbacks in the war and focus them on their disgust and disdain for this self-indulgent and unpatriotic event.
He didn't make the connection. He just threw them both up in juxtaposition under an assumption that the connection is obvious. Your observation is probably correct that the main intent of his rant was to bring up the sinking, since it can't be ignored away, and then to deflect to an outrage topic to quell the thinking about the Novocherkassk.

Meaning they were able to turn the screw much more in one go than they've generally been able to.
Long term, isn’t this good though? Forcing the elites to endure repression like (but not like) the common person seems like it does nothing but turn more people away from the regime.
They probably orchestrated the whole thing.
Drear Vlad, I recently discovered your channel and respect and am in alignment with your views. Your channel is so uniquely refreshing.
Thanks

The current reality of this war is that outsiders are sitting by and watching an entire country bleed itself to death, and take a good proportion of its neighbour with it to indulge the insane ideas of its psychopathic leader... It really is pathetic when you see it in real terms.
It took a while for me to be sure whether "Almost Naked" was the description of a social event, or the name of an organization that runs candidates for office.

A bare Russian bear?
I am so delighted you are in better health.
Hi Vlad, wish you lots of health and good tea! be safe

He likes to kiss young boys on their bellies. DOldMan.
Rubbish
@@johnm7267 In what sense, John? I can see several contradictory things that you might be objecting to, so please be a little more specific.
The urge to take refuge in tradition and prevent change is as old as society itself.
Not this case.

"UK had some many good shindigs when they could during WW2."
I've seen a video by Jabzy where he talks about that there was a kind of a sexual liberation during the Blitz in the UK, though that didn't last.

A whole new meaning to 'the Russian bare'.
How are we supposed to make any sense of this? Not just this trifling event but this Russia altogether. Does anyone in Russia just lie all day everyday about everything? That is the impression I get from every story coming out of Russia for years now.
With one exception recently, Ms Duntsova.
Nice work Vlad. Peace and health.
I was having anxiety attacks for a few days. Binging this channel helped me get thru it more easily. Not because Vlad sedates - far from it. Rather - he *calms*.
Thanks for vid Vlad, but I gotta add some context,
First, moscow's/st. petersburg nightlife has a tradition of being wild, and actual kink parties are(were?) a thing.
You need us, because without us THEY will tear you apart, and if you still believe you got their love go read online comments"
So in in one fell swoop kremlin lets out some steam of war and uncertainty discontent safely and reminds the elites how short their leash is.
Good points, and thanks!
The Online Comments. main point. i think they are all new AI bot farm. like big brother watching. rolling out for test as social experiment. no proofs. technically possible
you forgot the main reason why all this happened: one simple soldier recorded very angry video that made Putin shake with fear ) Hence the repressions.
@@sergeyt2947 Did you come up with this story yourself?
The comment is generally correct, except that the negativity began to rise from the bottom, not from the top. The sequence of events was approximately this: a party, photo posts on social networks, popular outrage (but quite moderate), statements from the “stars” in the spirit of “Sorry, we are not sorry,” a serious wave of rage, reaction from the government.
Sounds to me that Russia could use MORE of these "kink" parties!.😂
Make Love, not war.
Even these folks would probably have a heart attack if they got invited to an actual kink party...

Shame, I was eagerly waiting for the New Year party.
is this the start of a reversion to an era of "there is no sex in the Soviet Union?"
It's just bad taste and tact.
It does distinctively look like that. Now the Putin’s junta requires everyone, including previously untouchable celebrities, to actively and publicly support “traditional” Soviet values.
And that's how true it was then and is now..... 🤣
Hope 2024 will be a year of good health for you Vlad.

Happy new year to all you beautiful community!
The only difference is that the photos were spread in the Russian media to cause a moral panic.

Why is violence more acceptable than s3x? We have that same issue here in the U.S. too. Our priorities are messed up.
Because feeding violent urges and repressing sexual ones makes people easier to control.
I couldn't count the number of events I've attended that had a clothes check and all attendees were completely naked. Maybe that's why I feel like Nomad, "Non-sequitur. Your facts are uncoordinated."
Damn boy, you're constantly getting naked.

Russia's convulsions deserve a careful introspective scrutiny by us westerners. Pay attention! This IS us, too!
At least you gave a sensible example from the other side.
Both of these examples refer to the aggressor in unjustified wars. I think that the opposite seems to be happening in Ukraine: more tolerance & generosity; a greater feeling of unity & national pride; a stronger pushback to corruption.
Not forgetting that they are young "artistic" people, who by definition, oppose the establishment in whatever form it takes.

Eating your own is not a good sign of things going well in the cold, wet, blood soaked trenches.
It’s so good that I can read what Solovyov says in Western comments on RUclips.
