It's kind of funny how inescapable Venom is in mainstream Marvel and in Ultimate Spider-Man he and Carnage our disposable villains used to make covers interesting.
Fair point. Love the way 😂 they throw in the eating people it's 🧇 ironically cannon to add to your point.
It felt like a lot of the Ultimate universe outside the FF were given directives to include stuff that the 616 had decades of and the writers made them perfunctory. It was at its worse in Ultimate X-Men. I remember paying thru a trade UXM and it felt like someone told the writers “boil down Dark Phoenix, Proteus, Shadow King, Sentinels, and Asteroid M into one or two issues a piece and that will just be a year of publishing.”
Why not take the chance to make cool new stuff instead.
It's kind of crazy that the most popular thing about ultimate venom is the video game starring him and even then Carnage is barely in it

I love that Sal has vocalized multiple times that writers can pretty much do anything that they wants with the characters they are writing, but what Bendis did with doom is “wrong”

I used to have the Ultimate Spider-Man game on PS2 and played it all the time, I loved it. That was always the Venom sequel story, to me, but then this story arc came out. I still like it, but the game’s story will always have a special place in my heart
It is because it messes with that game that I dislike this arc so much. Especially since the retcons of this arc and everything it sets up is just never picked up again.
That game was literally a volume in ultimate Spider-Man at one point Such a great game. Spider-Man 2 on Ps5 reminds me of it so much
I'd honestly have preferred it if this was a sequel to the games story in which Eddie tries to kill Gwen because he sees her as a threat
@@johnnieriot13 yep, I even believe Bendis said on his old message boards the game was the sequel to the Venom arc fans were clamoring for. When this was coming out monthly I thought it was a retelling/sequel to the game.

Sal, when you do ultimatum, remember to do the 2 requiem issues of Ultimate Spider-Man. They’re the ultimatum aftermath issues that show what ultimate J Jonah Jameson was doing and shows Pete surviving ultimatum.
The passage of Time in the episode is INSANE😂 I'm soooo happy Back Issues continues to be A Fun & Epic Storytelling podcast😂❤❤

Ultimate Spiderman is always a treat on Back Issues and I was waiting for you guys to get to this story in particular. I'm a sucker for all things symbiotes and Gwen Carnage is super cool! Kind of wish they kept that longer, I would have loved more stories with Gwen as the Carnage symbiote.

I was just thinking of commenting "More Ultimate Spidey" on this weeks back issue for old times sake, but lo-and-behold, Sal was once again, streets ahead.
Its 2085 and the necromongers get the last laugh as the comic pop studios get encircled from above.
I remember playing the ultimate Spider-Man game on PS2 never finished it but remember it was a fun game. Also i think Ben is on to something that Eddie has a piece of the simbiote and it got hungry in order to reconstitute itself and restore itself 100% to original form similar or the same as ultimate carnage.
This comic is like a clock without hands. You will never know what time it is

A much better title for this comic would be Spider-Man: Time War.
Maybe the small part of the Symbiote that got left behind with the host, is some kind of C-C-C-C-COOOODEX. lol
This whole episode has been the "When will then be now" scene from Spaceballs
35:39 it's not what's familiar but similar. When the suit was introduced, Richard says it has to be made for a specific person and Eddie says the one(s) he made where done with blood from Richard. Peter only gets a bit of the suit on him but it gets fried then he destroys the rest of that batch but Eddie had a second batch made as a control specimen. Both suits are made using Richard's blood so Peter is the closest the suit can get to being with him.
Also, when you cover the Ultimatum tie-ins there's two issues not collected as they are part of the Ultimate Requiem series that acts as finales to the three ongoings at the time
Peter’s blood was closest but it wasn’t Richard’s. Eddie’s was vastly different so I imagined he needed to consume other cellular material so the symbiote wouldn’t eat his own. The game made a lot more sense about the “missing piece”. It would have been nice if they just said that Carnage was cloned using a part of Peter’s remaining symbiote and that it was needed to fully support Venom

I feel like there’s something very Freudian about two of Peter’s main love interests being a Goblin monster (MJ) and being a Carnage (Gwen).

Killing off Gwen was a massive mistake in the long run. Her relationship with Aunt May was so original and organic that it felt nice to finally see some version of Gwen finally find some closure and just be happy. Despite losing a loving father, she gained a mom and a brother while she was still young enough to experience what being part of a family was like. If only Uncle Ben could have been there, she would have had the full package.
The weird time placement of this arc has me like “I guess Bendis saw Memento one day and thought it was pretty cool.”
So..... this wasnt actually a war of symbiotes.... this was just a complicated story about Venom. This is where the game makes things better. The second-to-last boss fight in the Ultimate Spider-Man game pits you (playing as Venom) against a Carnage-controlled Spider-Man. Its only one fight, but its more than what we get here
Ultimate Spider-Man was my favorite Spider-Man game until Spider-Man PS4. Playing as Venom in a Hulk Ultimate Destruction style playground was so fun

The reason Dr Doom acquired Venom was to set up Ultimates 3. It was always weird that Venom randomly showed up there. I guess this was their attempt to connect the dots

No no. Those flashbacks like with Rhino and the museum are set peices in the game that they recreate here. They even use the same dialogue for the most part. Basically, the whole game happens up to the last act and then the comic overwrites that bit. I don’t expect anyone to remember any of that, I just happen to play through that game like 3 times a year. Also, if you’re curious, that museum is the Metro on 5th.

I‘ve been reading through the Ultimate Universe recently and I’m pretty sure the reason Beetle stole the symbiote for Doom was revealed in Ultimatum, when Doom explains how he orchestrated it beginning with the Scarlet Witch’s assassination fighting Venom. That Venom she fights in the beginning of Ultimates 3 is the same from this arc I believe.

There have been, what like 20+ episodes of back issues specifically dealing with Kang or hypertime or time travel in some form and the most chronologically confused we’ve ever been is when Bendis goes, “soooo….how bout Venom again?”
