Of Franks 60+ Albums, this one is in the top 10. This entire album is full of surprises, especially the song that precedes this one. Most of his albums have 1 or 2 instrumental only tunes. Try Zoot Allures for a more serious tune.
It is amazing how accurate you are on Franks aura. He always infused humor into his music, and lots of change ups. Every tune he composed has lots of twist and turns. But his serious side is just as good. He has many, many instrumentals to explore.

Yes, you will have to listen to Zappa tunes until the musicality sets in. Once you know what changes to expect, they make a lot more sense. This is complex music, as complex as much classical music is. Good reaction, even if you got a little caught off guard.

Really enjoyed this reaction. You can tell it's an honest first listen by the way you're sortof stunned and not even sure where to begin. That's how I felt the first time I heard this and many other Zappa works, too, but as with all of his music: the more you listen, the more you hear.

Wonderful song from wonderful album. I have listened to this album for over 40 years 😀. I love it! Background vocals are from Tina Turner and Ikettes, I believe, but Ike did not want to have their name on the record ( "What is this shit?"). Great stuff. Thank you for doing this.

    • @hansvandermeulen5515

Tina dragged Ike into the studio so he would hear what they'd done.
He heard it and said:"What is this shit?" and walked away.
      What a jerk....

  • @todd8155

This totally cracks me up. I watched your first reaction to "Watermelon in Easter Hay" and your response was "that wasn't what I was expecting. I was expecting Jazz, or Blues..."
So then you listen to Montana without any prior knowledge. My thoughts were "He has no idea what he is getting into. This should be interesting." It seemed like your initial response was shock, and you thinking WTF at the same time unable to deny the awesome music and musicianship. Your facial expressions were priceless. Watching an initial reaction to the phenomenon that is Frank Zappa. Now maybe you see why so many talk about him?
So that Jazz and Blues you were initially expecting? Yes, that and almost every other genre of music is covered by Frank at some point.
BTW, percussionist on Marimba is Ruth Underwood, one of the world's best on that instrument. Frank also consistently had the very best drummers.
If you like Jazz listen to the Grand Wazoo and Waka Jawaka albums. Master pieces IMO.
And you should listen to the entire Overnight Sensation album. There is a lot there including electric violin solo by Jean Luc Ponty on Fifty Fifty. And George Duke on the keyboards!
Final point, initial reactions can include information overload. You may not have noticed, but the song was about dental floss, and riding a tiny horse along the borders of Montana with a pair of heavy duty zircon encrusted tweezers in my hand, and the tweezers gleaming in the moon light. It may take many listens to absorb everything. These is a richness there that is unique with Frank. It's not for everybody, but I love it. YMMV

It may be a lot to take in. On the other hand also after many listenings you will find more details. Lyrics are often just silly or provocative but not always. Try a few instrumentals! One thing less to keep track of. Like the quite early "Peaches en regalia". There are several versions and arrangements. Also several covers.
