- An early train from Piccadilly to Stalybridge via Guide Bridge. We travel up the East line and round via Ardwick Station to climb steadily to Guide Bridge. At Guide Bridge West Junction, the Up Line becomes the Down Huddersfield and finally the train gets routed into Platform 3 at Stalybridge. Remember to subscribe for more videos of Trans-Pennine routes.
Everytime i get caught out by Piccadilly and keep thinking you are in London lol
It's very interesting to see the old Woodhead route overhead structures. They are VERY reminiscent of the Main West from Sydney to Lithgow down here in Oz. I think the same company electrified each line in the 1950s.
Very interesting video!
Thanks Henry.
Shame you can no longer go straight on from Guide Bridge and over Woodhead.
Nice video .funny always feels quicker going this way .than other way around Chris x
It is quicker Christopher but it lets trains pick up Victoria and Oxford Road too. It also avoids crossing Piccadilly throat.
Nice one Don! Hope you are well!
I am indeed Ken, same to you. Sorry for the late reply.
Very enjoyable video! Was this in the early morning or evening?
That particular one was early in the day.
Thanks Don.
A refreshing and early morning trip! ☺ Just a couple of questions... I know the DE (Down East), UE (Up East), DF (Down Fast), UF (Up Fast), etc. But what stands the G for (on the right side of the track from platform 13 out of Manchester Piccadilly)? And will you do the run from Manchester Piccadilly to Windermere one day? I'm going there tomorrow for the day and really looking forward to! It will be nice for a walk around the Lakes there together with the good weather of lately. 😎 The last question is... why are 4 carriages at 8.30am from Manchester Piccadilly to Preston, then 2 off to Blackpool and 2 off to Windermere (and v.v. from Windermere at 6.30pm); 1 each way once a day and nothing in between except for change-over at Oxenholme? Wouldn't it be handy a direct line to Windermere from Manchester through the day, as that would encourage more Mancunians going to the Lakes? Just wondering! And thanks again, keep up the good work, Don! 😉
G stands for Goods Jeannot. It takes you into Mayfield Loop. There is also another loop on the left of the slow lines so if you see ES that stands for Engine Siding and that is where they are going. Windermere is a Northern Service theses days so I doubt I’ll ever get up there.
Why are strips of rail left between the tracks ? Just seems strange to see them just left there and not removed at the end of any working on the tracks. I noticed some just after you left Guide Bridge. Do they serve a purpose or just left behind ?
Its something that puzzles quite a few watchers. They are mainly left there for logistical reasons in readiness for renewals. In some location where track damage is inevitable (like very tight curves) they will leave lengths of rail so they can just be dropped in or pieced up quickly.
Thanks for the reply Don. Now I can see that the reasoning behind that.
Just a suggestion: The stations you pass through, how about identifying them?
Yes, will do more with captions Neil ;-)
Watched your "Hull To Piccadilly video, I was only able to identify Stalybridge station because I could read its name on the destination board on the platform. But I strongly suspect that you've cut in video from a different trip to Piccadilly from that point(Stalybridge to Piccadilly stretch) because the lighting changed markedly either side of your "fade-to-and-from-black", from a sunny morning shot to a cloudy late afternoon shot.
Ardwick, ashburys, gorton, fairfield, guide bridge and stalybridge.
Used to travel to flowery field when I lived in the area.
What sort of train was that? Being so quiet for a diesel...
Also do trains stop at Ardwick?
Its a 185. Only a couple of Northern trains a day stop at Ardwick.
:) THanks - Quieter from the cab than it is from the carriage! Mind you its a while since I've been on one.
There’s a new line from Manchester Piccadilly to Huddersfield calling at ardwick, guide bridge, stalybridge, mossley, greenfield, and huddersfield
Ardwick Central or Ardwick Parkway???
I’m also amazed how the signal operators know the times of each train, which points to set directing each train wherever and setting the signals accordingly....for every single train...amazing.
They mostly have them all scheduled but they can deal with “ad-hoc” services too.
A nice calming evening journey! Thanks Don.
Just a short one that Martin. Just enough to nod off by 😉
Please could you make more night ones, there amazing 👌
The trouble is Thomas, the camera is hopeless in the dark and most of the time you can see nothing.
As a passenger I sit on the train from Huddersfield and marvel as we amble around Stalybridge and Guide Bridge. It's hard to believe that this is a route between major cities. The route to Victoria is a bit better. Going to take a lot of money to iron out this section I guess
It will likely be bypassed completely to be honest. Current plans are for Liverpool - Manchester - Bradford - Leeds to be a new buid high speed line.
