  • Today at VFR we take a look at a really cool new airplane from Wing42, the Boeing 247D. This 1930s vintage propliner has two big radial engines, is packed full of cool animations, has one of the best "EFB" systems out there, fleshes out a whole method of instrument navigation, all for just over $20 US! This is one I took a flyer on and it really blew me away. Join us as we fumble through Radio Range Navigation from Pittsburgh (KAGC) down to Washington DC (KDCA).

There are also musical radio stations you can tune to on frequency 560, 1200 and a few others. There is a CSV file for the custom radio beacons and the music stations that come with the package and can be uploaded to LittleNav Map to see the stations and frequencies in relation to yourself on an actual map. The music is nice, chill contemporary music befitting the plane :)

Nothing personal, almost every flight sim youtuber does it, but when you're doing things (like cranking an engine) and exclaiming about the sounds ... please remember that you've cranked the sim sound right down so you're not competing with it in the video and we can't hear anything quieter than a running engine :-) Nice video, I can see this arriving in my hanger shortly ...

Also the sound doesn't work on the RH engine flywheel cranking right now until they fix it in an update. the left sounds good when the window is open.

Great video - lots of good historical content as well. To add to what you have pointed out, this was truly the first "modern" airliner. It completely upstaged the Ford Trimotor and the Curtis Condor, which were its' senior contemporaries. It would probably have been at least some of what the DC series became, but for an interesting fly in the ointment - United Airlines (perhaps still called Boeing Air Transport at that point) was a part of the Boeing empire, and they deliberately monopolized the early production of the 247, taking just about all of them and keeping TWA and American Airways from getting any. This, of course, led Jack Frye of TWA to approach Donald Douglas about producing an even better airplane, which Douglas did - initially the DC-1 and in due course its' production version the DC-2. The DC-2 was so much better than the 247 (faster and holding at least two more passengers, while lacking the carry through spars that made walking the aisle of the 247 something of a challenge!) that even United had to have them, or be left in the dust. The final nail in the 247 coffin, at least economically, was C.R. Smith's famous 2 hour phone call to Douglas, which wound up creating the DST (Douglas Sleeper Transport), which in its' day version became the DC-3, the first airliner that could make money carrying only passengers and no mail or cargo. And the rest, as they so often say, is history!
As it happens, there have already been a few add-ons that allow for Radio Range navigation, but this is the first add-on airplane that includes a full set up. Full charts from the 30's and 40's are available online - just Google it. It took a good imagination for a pilot to keep a mental picture in his (or, occasionally back then, her) head. All of the more recent developments in navigation were oriented toward making the navigation situation more intuitive and easy to see right on the instruments. By the way, this kind of aural navigation is why A) - almost all of the early birds had trouble passing the hearing portion of their physicals later in life (the range stations broadcast in the same general bands as AM radio does today, and we all know what that sounds like in a thunderstorm) and B)- all of the pictures of pilots in the cockpit in this era show them wearing headsets, often worn OVER their hats. The real old timers never got used to the closed cockpits, and felt naked without something on their heads!

For 20 bucks this looks great. Getting the radio navigation along with an interesting aircraft is a great. And wouln't the clip board be a PFB? (paper flight bag)

Possibly the main reason why airline pilots can fly beyond age 60 these days is that they no longer have to lug 20 or so pounds of manuals and charts around! Before the advent of the EFB, and pilots' return to a small Halliburton attache case (which only the Captain carried when I was hired, so little was he required to lug around!), natural selection pretty much weeded out those of us who had failed to become body builders earlier in our careers!

Thank you for putting the effort in with the 247, the only addon I own so far. It's a tough one to master but very rewarding. It's amazing in VR as everything moves and shakes. Really enjoy your videos.

You must've had realistic engine damage off. Your oil pressure was through the roof and you could've shown the realistic fire animations lol

What a great video! Lots of useful information on navigation with this old radio system. I'm going to be purchasing this airplane soon. I hope to see the Curtiss C-46 Commando available for MSFS as well. Amazingly there are some of those still flying even today!

    can someone shortly explain this?

Thank you for your great work, I am your new subscriber, having just discovered your channel. Could you please explain why the directional gyro has the numbers increasing from left to right, opposite than the magnetic compass (that displays 9 6 3 0 33 30 27 which is familiar to me). Thanks and looking for many flights with you. Cheers from Sydney Australia, Nick.

Best way to start it every time is wobble before you begin winding up the flywheel. Wobble it up to as high as it goes. Then that button goes green to mesh the flywheel don't! keep wobbling to keep the needle up.! Do not mesh just yet!. This is the kicker: Stop wobbling then for the fuel needle to drop back to 12 o clock and as soon as it does MESH!

And after an engine catches and starts running, do not pull back on the throttle to cut off. The engine will die on you. Always keep some power on after the engine begins to run.

Can you use the MSFS ATC with this aircraft? I've tried asking for permission to taxi and everything just goes south from there.. I'm guessing something in the aircraft code is keeping me from using the MSFS ATC.. Can anyone confirm this? Bu the way.. GREAT CHANNEL!!! It's great to not have to hear an english accent every time I want to watch an aircraft video. Nothing against our neighbors from across the pond.. They're great..

They added a VHF radio on the far right in front of the FO. But it only has .100 channel separation. The tuning knob is detented (not sure if that's period accurate) and can't be tuned smoothly and some stations won't work unless you hold the mouse in a click between .100 which is hard.

Worst plane ever, uninstalled it after 10 min. What a waste of money. I regret like hell that i bought it. This plane is made for plane geeks and pilot wanna bees, not the casual flyer. So with this said, you made a too good off a video, and i went in the trap and bought the plane. I am the kind a guy who like to jump into a plane and Ctrl+E start it and take off in a jiff, i love flying around looking at the world, not pretending to be something i am not....like a pilot. But i like your videos, so no fault on you buddy :)
