- In this episode, we show you how to update the Retro-Bit Prism HDMI Adapter's Firmware for the Nintendo Gamecube.
The Nintendo GameCube is such an amazing platform. While Nintendo made a lot of mistakes with it, from the Mini DVD format vs standard, making it look like a toy, and a few other things, it does so much right. One of the best things they did was incorporate a digital AV output that we can tap into even today. With this Digital output, Nintendo offered Component video cables in the past. However, these are now crazy expensive, over $300 crazy-expensive. But, the retro community has created the GC Video format, which can be used to connect to an HDMI cable from this digital output. To team at Retro-Bit has thrown their hats into the ring with their own HDMI dongle, called the Prism HD.
The Prism HD simply plugs into the Digital port, leaving the analog open to be connected to a PVM, CRT, or other analog TV or monitor. You can also use the analog outputs to connect to an audio device if you are using a gaming monitor for the HDMI connection and it doesn't have integrated speakers. Now the connector that goes into the system is made out of metal, which should provide a long-lasting connection without stressing the system.
The biggest differentiation between the Prism HD and the other offerings out there is the integrated USB-C port. Why this is important is that, with GC Video 3.0 (which the Prism HD ships with), you can now update the firmware if or when updates are released. With other adapters, you need to use things like an Action Replay ($100) and/or SWISS, or crack the adapter open your adapter and tie into the JTAG connector. This is really something that is not just plug & play to use, but also plug & play to update.
Before we go any further, we need to address the fact that this is only works with the DOL-001 model of the GameCube. You NEED to have the digital output on the back of your system to make this work; it will NOT work if you only have an Analog output. It will also not work with the SNES, SNES Jr or the N64. This is ONLY for the GameCube with the Digital Output.

How to update your Prism HDMI Adapter:
- Download the Updater Tool
- This update requires a USB to USB-C DATA cable (I cannot stress this enough). It will NOT work with a charge-only cable.
- Windows and/or firewalls may detect it as harmful software so you may need to allow it to run as admin.
- There are two firmware versions v3.0e is the firmware the Prism launched with, while v3.1 is the new, updated firmware shown here.
- Connect the Prism with the USB-C and connect the USB end into your Windows 7-11 PC.
- Once detected, click on Update. The installation will take 1-2 minutes.
- A pop-up window will indicate that the Prism is ready and it will then safely disconnect itself from your PC.
- Now go test it on your GameCube!
Overall, the update process is simple and quick. The main thing I cannot emphasize enough is the need to use a DATA USB-C Cable. If you don't, the update will not work and you'll be left scratching your head. Beyond this minor point, the update process is super easy, and there's really no reason to not update.

I've been trying to find a broken orange GC to do a shell swap. Even those aren't cheap. Was going to do the same with the Yellow Game Gear. Ended up buying a shell and buttons and just made a replica.
Hold on to your hats because the prices on everything are just going to get more and more expensive as time goes on. 10% inflation for the win!
Rogue Squadron 2 still hold up and is one of my favorite games for the System.
The GC is probably my Favorite Nintendo console so maybe it is due an upgrade to the video quality.
While the F-Zero graphics are impressive, they tend not to survive RUclips compression very well. You can increase the bitrate of the file you upload to help slightly, but some freeze-frames or slow-motion would probably get the clarity across better.
I think it's less the YT side of things and more the Shadowcast...
I am holding on to my Carby, because like you said they're great devices. I do wish there was an easy way to upgrade the firmware. I have a HDMI to component adapter cable, and plug it into my Retrotink 5x. It seems like overkill, but the result is pretty amazing. Especially on a game like Rogue Squadron. I'm surprised there aren't more 3rd party component cables for the gamecube. Its a great system that has gained much popularity over the years. Its also just about the only use I have found for the Mclassic. Total overkill lol.
Yeah, if you have one of the other devices there's no "need" to switch, this is more for those who don't have anything yet
One of my favorites. Just got sick of buying bad disks and had to start running everything off from the Gameboy player style SD2SP2 and a Gecko with the Action Replay. I know you don't like running things off from a SD card but sometimes you need to if your expensive games have running problems because of scratches and worse little holes in the Data. Don't forget you can make Japanese systems English by soldering R6 under the heat sink. I use a hairdryer to loosen things up.
My orange system was Region modded for a short time, but I undid it. And if you own the physical games I have no issues running backups, but I will never support downloading and running ROMS
F-Zero GX on of the many games I wish would get a HD remaster.
Or just a new F Zero!
@@RoXolid the makers say want bring a new feature before they are even thinking of a new game. But in the meantime we could be enjoying a remaster of a great game on the let's say the switch.
Hi where would you recommend I should buy GameCube games from since I own a GameCube and which GameCube controller do you recommend I should use
Hang tight for the new Retro Fighters controllers, they should be coming early next year. If you can't wait, then go with the OG Wavebird
For games, it depends where you're at. Conventions and swap meets will have the best selections, but even keep an eye on Facebook marketplace
@@RoXolid well there aren't any swap meets or conventions in Idaho because I am from Idaho
Any ideas what updates this firmware release addressed?
Uhhh, I showed this on-screen:
This latest update includes the following:
* Changes were made to the audio subsystem to reduce the chance of timing failures during synthesis
* Improved compatibility with some Samsung TVs
* Fixed video info codes of 16:9 modes
* Prevents excessive screen blanking during menu transitions in some games (e.g. Eternal Darkness)
* Added 486-to-480 cropping for GBI
@@RoXolid how on earth did I miss this???
@@LifeWithMatthew Turdistani education?
Any idea how i can get the app to recognise my Prism? Windows installs drivers but it wont have it..
I'm having the same problem. Data cable and all
@@patrickmatthews10 you know what solved it for me pal? Totally different computer. Tried it on my daughters laptop and bingo it worked.
Mine just came in today! Plugged it up and I am getting no audio whatsoever. Tried it on several different televisions and monitors. Also it would only output 480i to everything and I could never get 480p. If anyone has any solutions that would be great!
I only get audio if it is plugged into an mCable classic. And the signal drops at every cutscene/resolution change. Kinda sucks…..
Can you update the firmware update on a Chromebook I don't have a pc
I honestly don't know, I don't think so
Do you think this is worth selling a Carby to get?
Nah, no need to convert. At this point the firmware is more about fine tuning than sweeping changes
@@RoXolid ahh I figured as much. Thankfully my Carby shipped with the 2.0 firmware so I don’t need to use a JTAG programmer and can just update it vial a .dol file in Swiss using GC Loader.
Does this work for Carby Version 2 as well?
No, that update process is quite different.
@@RoXolid Hmm, but the interface of both adapters look quite similar 🤔
@@GamerDan89 The Carby, to the best of my knowledge, has to be opened and uses either a Micro SD or JTAG connector to connect and update the dongle. This has the USB-C which is plug & play
@@RoXolid ah okay that makes sense. Do you know if the Carby without update has same issues like your adapter in tze first place?
@@GamerDan89 Not sure what build of GC Video that comes loaded with. And depending on when your unit was produced you may have a different build too.
I went the Rad2X route.
That's a great option
Sega is on its way back to the top. Sega is coming soon. Be on the look out.
We'll see!
i just got one from Amazon today. No video, no audio. Plugged into the pc with a usb c cable, red light comes on, windows doesnt see it. I thought maybe the cable was the issue, so i got my PS5 controller charger cable, also usb c. That got the prism recognized by windows, was able to update to 3.1, but still no video or audio. Theres also a sound coming from the inside of this thing when you shake it. I got a replacement coming from amazon. Hopefully it actually works. This thing also feels really cheap. Based on that alone i wouldnt buy it again. A friend has the Kaico gc video adapter. Should have got that one. Definitely not like their controllers.
I would never recommend a Kaico product. They have a horrible reputation in the community, and outright copied another manufacturer's product (including typos on their website). My Prism has worked flawlessly since I got it, manufacturing flukes can happen, but if you have any further issues reach out to Retro-bit directly
@@RoXolid Be that as it may, in this instance, having experienced the Kaico, ugly silver body and all, running solid. We'll see how my replacement goes.
Has nothing to do with their design, more about their lack of integrity.
@@RoXolid i feel you. So much rebranded stuff out there. At least they gave Ikorb credit and a thank you for the creation and contiued support. I get it though.
It's not rebranded. They got caught stealing The RetroTink 2x
yet the game cube games was the easy too pirate there so many sites where you can download them that plan failed for nintendo ha ha ha
I guess
