Not sure of the exact name. There are a few different things used kinda depends on the blacksmiths preference and what they are trying to do. Looks like powdered borax in this case. Used as a protectant to ‘seal’ the metal from air. Helps in the keeping the metal workable along with what I feel it helps pull impurities out. Used to use it by the can full in the aluminum furnaces I ran back in the day in a foundry.
