I find that the closer focus the less flaking of the glass from the mirror fracturing.. Basically zero clean up.. I have tested defocusing away as well and only close.. 2-3mm will work.. Not sure for the reason beyond how the beam is interacting with the glass.. If you focus at 6mm you will have scaling and little shards that must be cleaned.
