  • Throughout my education in marine biology I have participated in a number of projects and have volunteered in some activities related to marine sciences. In this video I talk a bit about different projects I have participated in and some other stuff I have done until the point where I am today.
    If you have any interesting marine stories to share or internships you would suggest write down in the comments. I am eager to also learn from you! =)

    Internships are definitely a great way to get experience. I worked at Harbor Branch Oceanographic and Dauphin Island Sea Lab back in college. I decided to go the full teacher path, but I learned so much through internships that I pass along to my students. .

      Yes I completely agree. Internships and volunteering generally always come together with a lot of good teachings and experiences. =)

    I want to be a marine biologist/zoologist for my local aquarium because they have really good programs and I think I may want to work there and you give me hope and inspiration.

    Love marine biology.Thanks for sharing me the passion of creating videos on thoese theme.Also, thank you for all the info given. ❤️❤️. Do you know some books that I can learn fron as a beginer?

      Hi Alex. Thank you so much for the sweet comment ^^. If you want to just have a general understanding of the marine systems I would recommend "The Sea Around us" by Rachael Carson. She was a marine biologist and the book was written in the 50s but it is still a great read for someone who just wants to have an idea on how things in the ocean are connected.

    Hey! I am currently studying in an ecology bachelor in france. I didn't even know that it was possible to do more than 2 month "internship" in a research laboratory. How did you bring this idea in the discussion with your proffessor? Did he propose you or did you ask him ? Also, I am wondering how did you combine courses and your participation to research projects? When did you take the time to do these projects ? Many questions but I am really surprise that it is possible, agreeably surprise. Thank you for your answers and for your work, your willingness to make science accessible and to encourage younger generations to be engage in ecology, science, ocean protection,...

      Hi Chab. Starting off with your first question, this was not an official internship. I simply sent an email to my professor with my CV and explaining my situation and stated that I would be interested in working in that and that and if he needed help in the lab. And turned out he did and that was it. Sometimes all it takes is initiative and a bit of luck. Regarding the research projects, they were not my own research projects, I was just helping some of my professors with theirs. You have to do it in your free time, like after classes or on the weekends, unfortunately there is really no other chance. Thank you very much for your nice comment and I hope I could answer your questions. =)

    Is there good marine Institutes here in the U.S.? If so where?

  • @matpikachu

    Wow, u want to learn German! lol Also, how did you pay for all those course and extra-curricula courses? Is it b/c the education in Europe is much cheaper than in the U.S.?

    • @Seamemaria
      @Seamemaria  6 лет назад +1

      Haha yes I´ve been learning german for more than 3 years already =) I really enjoy learning new languages. In Europe education is by far much cheaper than in the US. In Austria and Denmark for instance, education is free for European students. In Portugal where I studied it was not for free but it is not compared to the fees people have to pay in the US. Also, since I was studying in Lisbon, where I grew up, I lived with my parents until I was 23 which allowed me to save money in accommodation as well. Besides that I was lucky to have a small monthly allowance from my parents and also some jobs that allowed me save a bit of money.

    Do you know of any summer internship programs for undergraduates that you would recommend?

    • @Seamemaria
      @Seamemaria  6 лет назад

      There are thousands of programs, institutions, volunteering programs for all sorts of fields all around the world, so it will depend a bit on what exactly you want to do, how far you are willing to go and to pay. I do not know of one specific general marine biology internship. You can check out this facebook page :facebook.com/groups/39975981246/
      There are a lot of jobs and volunteering opportunities popping up in different fields of marine biology, I hope this can help a bit =)

    Oláa!! onde é que tiraste o curso de mamiferos marinhos? :3

    • @Seamemaria
      @Seamemaria  5 лет назад

      Tirei o curso na Fcul. Na altura havia um grupo da Escola do Mar (na altura ao lado do Instituto Oceanográfico) que estudava os golfinhos na zona da Arrábida. Mas isto já foi há uns anos, nao sei se ainda existe.

      Hmmm acho que já nao existe não :c é uma pena porque gostava de tirar um curso desse tipo. Este ano candidatei me para fazer voluntariado com a terra azul nos açores :3 para ver baleias e golfinhos (espero que consiga fazer!!). O Carlos Assis foi teu professor? Certamente no teu tempo ele dava mamiferos, aves e repteis marinhos acho. E ja agora que idade tens? E tiraste o mestrado também na FCUL? Só fizeste erasmus no mestrado ou também na licenciatura? :)

    Where is the best country to work as marine biologist?
    // is france or german good

    • @Seamemaria
      @Seamemaria  6 лет назад +1

      It really depends on the area. But generally France and Germany (as well as most northern European countries) are really good to work in science. Both have worldwide leading institutions in many marine biology fields. I am not very acquainted with science in France, but in Germany there is a lot of money going into science and just like here in Austria there is a lot of governmental support in comparison to most countries around the world, which means that even as a PhD student you have quite a lot of social benefits.

    • @metegkc3148
      @metegkc3148 6 лет назад

      But germany has colder water than france . Is that effects this job ?

    • @Seamemaria
      @Seamemaria  6 лет назад

      Germans invest a lot in expeditions aboard research vessels and field work in other places around the world. Of course there is also some local research going on, but I doubt that they need a lot of diving for it.

    Can a person afford a nice big house by being a marine biologist ?

    • @Seamemaria
      @Seamemaria  6 лет назад

      It depends what would be a big house for you, where you work and at what point of the career you are. You can have a good high-middle class lifestyle if you become a successful marine biologist, however you will probably not become a millionaire.

    • @Ryukushinn
      @Ryukushinn 6 лет назад

      Can you define what you would call a "succesful" marine biologist?
      And how is it to live like a marine biologist in terms of free time, the salary and things you can afford?

    • @Wheelygonzales
      @Wheelygonzales 6 лет назад +2

      Jhovany Ramirez Why are you worried about having a big house? Your concern should be your job and the animals/ecosystem you are caring for.
      If you make enough to live comfortably, then money should not matter.
      We need talented, passionate and caring individuals to work in these fields.

  • @Ryukushinn
    @Ryukushinn 6 лет назад

    But I'm wondering why would a professor want or need a random bachelor's student in his/her project? Serious question lol. Do they perhaps need more people, or are they so passionate and kind to share their interests with others?

    • @Seamemaria
      @Seamemaria  6 лет назад +1

      That is a pertinent question. And the answer is simple, students are free workers who normally do anything the supervisors say. There are a lot of tasks that do not require much previous experience, and many department welcome students who are ready to do them. Normally the tasks are not the most exciting ones but it is a good way to show that you are interested and to start making contacts. And if you are lucky and the people like it bits by bits you might start being given more interesting and complicated things to do.
