  • As filmmakers that live in Durban, we documented the collapse of our home town. In a three part mini episode titled - Durban Is Collapsing.
    Filmed from 17th November - 2nd December 2022.
In collaboration with The Litterboom Project.
    This is the full version.
As the province slides into a state of disrepair,
with thousands of litres of raw sewage running into our oceans and rivers, making our people sick. The state of our beaches filthy and litter strewn.
The municipality’s and governance of KZN have failed us.
With special thanks to all the contributors and people, who continue to expose the truth and fight for the preservation and believe in the potential of #OurDurban

Great effort, team!! We live in a little Midlands town in KZN, and we're currently fighting against the apathy of indifference and corruption. The surprising thing is since the roits of 2021, we've become far closer knit community (read into that a none BEE compliant community). Today, our little village is united across race barriers and is far more confident to take on the various guieses of our failed government. We're winning small, almost insignificant victories every month (wish it was every week), but we're making an impact. My point is you guys are legends don't give up the good fight.

People in general will not stop paying taxes because they fear the repercussions more than the decay. It's an individual act which requires a leader before it can become viable. Withholding taxes is frowned upon by good meaning people even if the beneficiaries are corrupt.

These politicians/administrators of today all what they know is to occupy public office and generate money for themselves and friends. Millions or Billions of public money is not for service delivery, but is for their friends to become rich/millionaires, smoke cigars, expensive trips to overseas. Go out there and audit all municipal projects, completed/not completed, you'll shocked about what they have charged.
A project of R200 million will be completed with R50 million, R150 MILLION squandered/looted. There is disaster funds in government, even foreign countries are contributing to it. Durban qualified to that fund. But how much was collected/allocated. Durban beeches are not closed for CONSTRUCTION. They are closed because it is not environmental safe to be there. My children were born here & would love to visit but we are told by friends that the city isn’t safe enough to come out for a holiday. My parents brought me here in 1976 & are now buried here. The memories of this beautiful city are fortunately safely in my head. Durban is fast becoming dilapidated...it's not just the beaches. The state of our CBD, roads and residential areas is shocking. Regular monitoring and maintenance will prevent many of our present challenges, however, nobody in the positions of authority seem to be invested in it's upkeep and people in positions of authority are not held accountable. We have some of the best beaches in our beautiful country. If we, the people, join forces to fix the problem (and I believe we will step up and deliver) we will be enabling the present malpractices to continue. It's sad that future generations may not be able to enjoy the beauty of our country unless the people in positions of authority care deeply enough to just do what is required of them. Nothing more, nothing less. It does not have to be this way. It can be turned around!

I am 41 years old. I was born in Durban and still live here. Over the years I have joined the Parks Board honorary offices and various other organizations that were involved in clean up operations and wildlife care and protection, so I did not just sit around and complain like was mentioned in the report above. However every time any of the organizations started up and started doing well and becoming a success, some one from our lovely government would come and make things hard and difficult to continue on, eventually leading to its collapse . You see they do not like it when people come along and do their jobs( which they they are being paid extremely well for I might add) and do it far more efficiently and effectively than they could possibly ever could. This is not a rant on politics, race or religion, this is about criminals that steel our tax money and use it to fuel their lavish life styles and full their pockets with tax payers money. And that's all there is to this situation here in Durban and the whole of our beautiful country, our failed state.

Who breaks glass everywhere, and throws bones everywhere, and pees all over? The people who live in Durban. Who breaks the dustbins and dumps rubbish all over? The people of Durban, that’s who. Who throws so much litter into the rivers and storm water drains? Who leaves rubbish all over the beach? The people who live in Durban do this. People can play the blame game all they like, but it’s the people who live here who have absolutely no pride in their environment. Why must people pick up after you all the time? We can moan about the municipality and the waste of our tax payer money but that’s not going to take away from the fact that Durbanites are causing the filth. Yes the municipality must clean up and fix the infrastructure and sewerage issues, but people need to take responsibility for their actions and the cleanliness of our city.
