After more than 40 years of Shotokan practice I can honestly say that nothing replaces the real deal of dojo training under a good instructor, plus of course your own personal home training. However I feel a quality instructional video is worth it's weight in gold to help us develop our karate.

I totally agree with you Bill 100%. That is why I train everyday at the dojo and at home! My instructor is very sick at the moment and therefore he can not teach me this particular kata, so this video is truly "Gold" to me!

So the hand position in the third techniques has the tips of the thumbs touching - as in the opening move from Kanku Dai ? I have been doing this Kata for approximately 30 years and my thumbs have never touched !

anakmalaysia2012 - Thank you for posting this video. It's very good and allows us to see the warm personality & teaching style of one of the JKA's best instructors, Naka Sensei. With so many small and subtle changes going on in JKA kata, videos such as this one allow us to better understand those changes. For example, the gentleman on the right (German maybe?) at 6.18 is doing the ushiro technique in the old style. Naka Sensei didn't correct him about this, so maybe there are two ways?

Shame it didn't show the finish of the Kata. I would have liked to have seen Sensei Naka's explanation of the hops at the end. Is it, as I believe it is, just so that we finish on the same spot on the embusen that we started from ?
