One of the greatest seasons of television I have ever seen. My vocabulary isn't good enough to describe how good this show was. And of course, this is the best show on Afterbuzz TV. Keep up the good work, I hope all 4 of you are still around for Season 2. Together, no breaking up!
It has been most enjoyable listening to your observations, predictions, and insights to True Detective Season 1. Your show is a gem. In my experience, you four are the A-Team of reviewers.
What an amazing show this was. Beautifully acted, directed, executed... everything. What I really loved is that they could have gone the "one of them won't make it out" kind of endings, but they did something amazing. For a show that is hopelessly fatalistic in general, the writers were able to perfectly set up a happy ending without anyone suspecting it ahead of time. Plus they did it without it being sappy or corny. Speaking of the ending, I really came close to getting misty during his monologue about his daughter and family There was so much more to Rust behind that nihilistic and world weary view he had. To know that even someone like him can live a happier life was really good for the character, as opposed to being with them in death, which is fine, but it's been done. As I said it was a good ending, not a sappy Rust is all smiles now one. And MAN was that ever some top notch acting from McConaughey, (though they all did fantastic) I wanted to re-watch it just to take in all that he said once more. Simply amazing. Well on to season 2 now. Which I think should stand on its own and not try to out do what we have all seen, which I'm sure Pizzalato has under control. Can't wait to see it.
This was so well written. Rust talks as if his life is meaningless without his daughter, but he goes to visit his father when he knows he may be killed by infiltrating the motorcycle gang, then when he stops police work he spends 8 years in Alaska where he hates it. It had to be because of his ‘pops’ --who we know is dead now. That must have been part of the reason he decided to pick up the case again before he ended his life---because his Dad died. I’m just piecing this together--I don’t remember this being spelled out. The monster identifies him as ‘the little priest’, which is apt because his life really is shaped by love-- even if it is lost love-- and all his nihilist preaching is an attempt to make sense of, or define, why he has lost his beloved daughter. Like a priest, he preaches a lot, and he prophecies of the monster at the end of his nightmare life of degradation and violence. And like the monsters definitions, his definitions are conclusions that he is nothing more than an animated meat puppet; when the animation is gone then the illusion is gone and the reality remains; rotting meat like the monster has enshrined in his father’s corpse and in the skulls at the shrine of the Yellow King. The monster, stabbing Rust, says ‘now take off your mask’. He is telling him to die-- to lose the animation of his human face so as to reveal the real and final face in the corpse that remains. He stares into Rust's face obsessed with the face of death and the fear of death -- like a porn addict is obsessed with the orgasmic faces of women. Rust hates death but has always said that the devil will get his due--the monster is at the end. But the monster isn’t the end of his nightmare. Instead, his nihilism and definitions fade, all the stories he tells himself about why he suffers fade away. All the need to understand fades away. At the end, all that remains, in the darkness, is everything he ever loved. Two people; his pops and his daughter. Existing still, in his love for them. Then he wakes up. The long nightmare of his life is over. He can live now.
The only problem with this is he doesn't go visit his father. That is just what he tells the detectives he went to do because he can't tell them the true story of him going to do the motorcycle gang thing and going undercover again. His father was already dead. He was in Alaska yes, but he wasn't there with his father. He was there running from the past and after 8 years he realized he couldn't get away from it unless he finished things. He then goes back to finish things and because he is around all the crime scenes the detectives see him and start to bend the narrative to place Rust as the killer. I don't believe you need to search for a metaphor in what they are saying/doing because what they are saying/doing in itself is the metaphor. It's laid out for you. Rust has gone from being a Pessimist (as he describes himself in episode 1) to being an optimist (You're looking at it wrong Marty, in the beginning there was only darkness, if you ask me the light is winning) And Marty has finally realized that he doesn't need to keep striving for his younger days, living in the past (screwing younger women) he has all the love he needs in the relationships he has. Like with Rust, and his family. This is why he calls Rust his friend for the first time and why he breaks down crying in the bed. It all hits both of them after they have ended the case and that "Circle" has concluded.
This was a great show. I hate to say that in the context of the stuff that I wish I could UNSEE (The Tour) LOL. Great reviewing Afterbuzz Team. I'll miss TD and your show--see you next season.
What a fantastic series! Such good acting from everyone on the show. I felt a lot of religious conotations were shown, such as Rust lying in the hospital bed appearing like Jesus Christ & where his wound was; side of his abdomen. Just wondering if anyone else felt that way. Truly, the best series ever!!!
i thought at the end when cohle pulled the knive out of his stomach/chest that he basically was going to kill himself, i mean, i am assuming he would know that you don't want to pull something out like that, because it is the only thing stopping the blood from just gushing out.
somebody saw the Christ-scene of Rust in his hospital bed right before going out with Marty in wheelchair. I think Rust was seeing himself as just taken off the cross ( + knifemark in his chest ) at e certain moment...beautiful scene i thought. herad Matthias Schoenarts ( belgium actor) is tipped to be one of the detectives season 2. ( would love to have some comment , thanks)
I'm pretty sure the detectives said DNA tests showed that the woman was AT LEAST his half sister, which means they could be full blood brother and sister...
Some little things that are bugging me.... 1. I have known many painters. NONE of them ever came home with painted ears. 2 What did Rust mean by 'tasting" Aluminum? 3. Why did the dog not attack Cohle?, and why did his master kill him? 4. Someone with a hatchet buried into his chest would be foaming blood and be unable to talk, much less scream for help. 5. It's over, and I will miss this brilliant series so very much.....
1. I agree. paint gets onto your shoes and forearms, never seen it on ears yet. 2. a metallic taste in one's mouth comes from radiation poison or chemical, but in this case i think it refers to the danger he senses. 3. Dog's behaviour was odd, so I think the writer used the dog as a hero who gets killed for going after the villain. 4. Axe "somehow" did not puncture the lung, which augments Hart's role as Hero in this scene. 5. This series taught me how bad other TV shows are produced and I will now spend less time in front of the screen and more time being a critic.
Rust isn't an atheist. Nobody ever even says the word atheist in the entire show. Rust even says it himself that he guesses he could be what is called a pessimist. That's a very loosely used term by Rust, almost because he couldn't find any other word to describe his beliefs. Pessimist, nihilist, misanthrope. These are all more appropriate terms but ultimately none of them are right on the money when it comes to describing Rust.
The scene on the boat with Dracy was pointless, it didn't advance the story or case in any way, and instead took time away from like a hundred other things that would have been more beneficial to show (conspiracy, occult stuff whatever.)
This didn't feel like a TV show.... every episode felt like a movie. Absolutely amazing.

i really enjoyed their boardwalk empire and sons of anarchy afterbuzz shows. homeland is hit or miss, but still really enjoy it.

Thank you for your insightful well-presented observations.
The guy who was not drinking at the time was the true detective. In 1995 and 2002 it was Cohle, in 2012 it was Hart.

He never went to visit his father. It was smoke and mirrors because the entire operation with the bike gang was not sanctioned and off the books.
The only problem with this is he doesn't go visit his father. Great job guys! Hopefully we'll see you again!
Entertaining and insightful. Hope you guys do Season 2, too :)
They might steal your kids and "make flowers" on them but they give you a hell of a deal to paint the house.... Lol

Jules! There is a picture on the wall of that house today.
That jogged his memory that they took pictures of all of these houses as a normal part of their canvassing in '95.
That flower making scene made me crave for some good ol' massacred dead bodies..for real.
Awesome
When Rust said he felt his definitions fading did he mean that he felt his "soul" passing on or did it have a deeper meaning?
I've posted my understanding of this in my top level post if you're interested.

The Tape is the Plaay
there is a plot twist, Rustin becomes a changed man. sorta.
Do the fosters after show!!! Plz 😍

"Atheism is, in a broad sense, the rejection of belief in the existence of deities."
Sounds to me like he's an atheist.
Brad Pitt & Colin Farrell with David Fincher directing. Too ambitious?
The scene on the boat with Dracy was pointless, it didn't advance the story or case in any way, and instead took time away from like a hundred other things that would have been more beneficial to show (conspiracy, occult stuff whatever.)
If that "reality" show is anywhere near as bad as that crappy "comedy" movie they were constantly hawking... NO THANKS!!!
