I’d like to see a video of how you make new grips. Any chance? Learning a lot from your videos and my shooting has improved greatly!

For the bow that I use now the most I went through 14 iterations of grip, but now I think I got it. I will start making videos again and we will talk about customizing the bows in one of them. Thank you for your kind words and for making me feel useful.

Really useful, please continue the series! Also, do you have any advise on what materials to use to make a custom grip? Perhaps a video on how you make yours?

Hey Paul, thank you for your comment. The best material for me is Rayskin since it good for sweaty palms in the summer. Cork and hemp string works good. On one of my bows I hae catfish skin which is also good. I will make some more videos including the customization of all my bows, but I did not had much time lately.

@@theruleofthumb2171 Awesome, thank you. What material do you use to make the bulk of the handle to get that egg shape? My bow handle is splitting and lacks the bulge on the back, so it's time for a new one!

Hi, thanks for your videos. They are very well articulated and very clear. I would like to start Korean archery. Do you have a bow, arrows and any gear to recommend ?

If you want my advice, even if you are an experienced shooter with finger shooting, go for a low poundage bow that you will need all the time, even after getting a stronger bow. I found that the best bow for practice is Rolan Snake for kids, the short one that can open up to 32 inch. If you need more draw length, go for regular Rolan Snake. Also, for beginners, I recommend going with leather thumb protection in the beginning, and then horn ring for the normal bow.
The best Korean bow that I had and use is the YMG Hwarang, maple core. It is easy and smooth to draw, stays nice at full draw, and can shoot lighter arrows with no issue. Mine withstands several accidental dry-shots and I have been told by the previous owner that those where not the first dry-shots it had. I don't know if you can get it outside Korea, I have to check. Mine was a prize in an archery competition down there.
In terms of cheaper and ready available bows I stand by the Nomad from Freddy. It is bamboo core, it likes heavier arrows and has more kick than the maple core bows. Also, the Nomad is available in 53inch, more suitable for big westerners.
In terms of arrows, I have 6 carbon arrows for makiwara training (shooting 2-3m from target for form training) from Bearpaw, Heavy Hunter 500.
For regular training, 50, 70, 90 and 145 meters I use POC cedar shafts with adaptors from TopHat at both ends, and regular carbon nocks and tips. The shats got barrelled by hand/knife by me.

Hi, thank you for the quick and detailed response. It shows how much you care. I actually am a complete beginner. I haven’t taken a single archery lesson yet but I have already spent some time researching the topic. Korean archery is the style I would like to practice. Do you have remote students ? Can archery be taught online (using a webcam and a proper setup to capture the whole posture etc.) ? If yes, and if you’re disposed to do it, I’m definitely interested. I have quite a big garden surrounded by stone walls. I can probably have a 25m shooting distance with a good level of safety. Sorry for the direct approach but I just feel like it’s the right thing to do.

@@curtisgrant8582 Hello! The fact that you are not trained in other type of archery it can be a great plus. Korean archery is nothing like other types, although it has some similarities with Kyudo. It has a steeper learning curve but it is the best technique for achieving accuracy over any type of shooting or distance. Also, it is a form of meditation, if you are paying attention on what are you doing rather on what you are achieving. You need a week bow at the beginning, at that bow will help you a lot even after you buy a suitable strong bow. I recommend Rolan Snake because is cheap and it is great for learning. Some generic carbon arrows at 600 spine also. In the beginning you will not need a ring, or you can make a leather one yourself if you prefer. After you get all this we can start the lessons. First one is free, and then you decide if it worth it! Give ma a sign when you have the bow and arrows and we can start. Cheers!
